The light is like this. To this, the edge of this land follows. At that time, from the sky, the Buddha image that appeared from the seven-jeweled palace spoke to him: Those who are at my feet, and those who are at the edge of this land, all will hear my voice, and will know all these practices. The ten-powered Buddha's teachings are unmixed, these observations are true for all beings. The nature of the land, the objects and creations of the land, and all the words of the land, will be known. In my Buddha's pure land, beings will not be discouraged after hearing these words. All will abide in the supreme state, they will not turn away from the Buddha's teachings. Those that are common with the Shravakas, this is not the guiding Dharma. For those sons of the Victorious One who have great faith and joy, they will destroy the faults of Mara and touch enlightenment. Having said this, by the power of the Buddha, the Buddha's pure land became known and heard everywhere. Again, in the past, there was a Tathagata named "Beyond All Beings," who appeared in a world called "Virtuous Eye." In that field, the Bhagavan himself, the Bodhisattva named Boundless Strength Holder, who was the leader of seven hundred thousand Bodhisattvas, who had become skilled in the six perfections and means, subdued those Bodhisattvas, and ripened the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. They also served that Tathagata. Those who abide in comfort in the visible Dharma also abide there. He sends emanations to the beings from eighty million trillion worlds to the Buddha's field, thereby fully ripening and subduing the beings. Then, that Tathagata spoke to that Bodhisattva: Son of good family, in these immeasurable trillions of worlds, the three lower realms and the Asuras, and how there is no lack of leisure, and all the Buddha fields are in accordance with one instant, is it possible to fully ripen in this way? The Bodhisattva Boundless Strength Holder replied: Bhagavan, it can be done in an instant, I am capable. Please command.

Lala. Son of lineage, are you able? The beings of today are long-lived, with countless trillions of kalpas. How can those lazy Bodhisattvas benefit everyone with a single method? Son of lineage, my eyes have seen this Buddha-field repeatedly used as a Buddha-field by countless trillions of Buddhas. Similarly, there are other Buddha-fields that have not been subdued by many Buddhas. There is no other field like this one, which has been completely matured by many Buddhas. Son of lineage, therefore, you should generate faith in the Tathagata's command, and you must make this Buddha-field fully mature and utilized. Son of lineage, you have accumulated roots of virtue towards countless trillions of Buddhas, and you possess sharp wisdom and incomparable compassion. Can you, in this one lifetime, fully mature all sentient beings? The Bodhisattva replied: If the Tathagata commands me, Out of compassion for sentient beings, I would gladly enter a pit of fire for countless kalpas. After answering in this way, that Tathagata completely passed into nirvana. Then, the Bodhisattva Boundless Strength Holder made extensive offerings to the Tathagata's relics. Remembering the Tathagata's command, he held compassion close to his heart for sentient beings, and emanated countless billions of emanations, filling that Buddha-field with non-returning Bodhisattvas like flowers, and then relinquished his life. Furthermore, when he was born as a prince named Stump, although his appearance was unsightly, he overcame his enemies with courage and the power of steadfast endurance, and subdued six rival petty kingdoms. Later, through the power of the jewel given by Indra, his body also became as beautiful as a god, he enjoyed great wealth, and he performed extensive meritorious deeds of generosity. These circumstances should be understood in the Damamūka Nidāna Sūtra. When he was sitting at the Bodhi tree, a being who was considered a Mara wanted to cause trouble. The Tathagata, seeing the past virtuous roots of that Mara, through his miraculous power, made that Mara remember how he had performed the deeds of a Mara towards the previous Tathagatas, causing sentient beings to fall into the great hells. That Mara, with a mind of fear and sorrow, went for refuge to that Tathagata, confessed and repented of his sinful deeds, and, with faith in the profound Dharma of the Buddha, generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. ༈ Also, in the past, when he was born as the daughter of a merchant friend, he entered the ocean and reached the other shore. In the end, he experienced the undiminished suffering in the manner of loving his mother. Because of the maturation of the deed of disrespecting his mother, when an iron wheel was spinning on his head, he generated compassion for all sentient beings. For their sake, as soon as he generated the mind wishing that the wheel would only remain on his own head, he passed away from that state and was born as a god in Tushita. ༈ Also, in the past, when he became a sage named Drumming Sound, he stayed in solitude practicing asceticism on one foot for sixty thousand years. Brahma and Indra bowed to him, and the gods of desire and form offered to him and asked him questions. That sage remembered the beginning and end of the eons of how the stars appeared in the sky, and described all the arrangements of the stars, etc. He also established the divisions of time such as moments, days and nights, and months. To this, all the gods, etc., were pleased and praised him, saying that there was no such sentient being in the world. ༈ Also, in the past, when the Tathagata was walking with the gait of a lion, this Bhagavan himself became the Bodhisattva Vajra Banner, and having retained all the categories of Dharma and the words of Dharani that he heard, he liberated sentient beings afflicted by various diseases in all the cities. ༈ Also, in the past, when he became a Bodhisattva, when the Tathagata Star King was in the Samadhi of Exhausting Fire, he stood on one foot and circumambulated for seven days, and praised him with a single verse. And so forth, various kinds of birth stories should be known from the Sutras.

Furthermore, it is said in the Sutras that great Bodhisattvas do not have the karma of hell, but for the sake of sentient beings, they make aspirations to be born in hell. In the past, when the lifespan was a hundred years, having seen sentient beings suffering in hell as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, the Bhagavan himself, in the time of being a Bodhisattva, generated a great vow and took the body of hell. For countless years, he extensively taught the twelve categories of scriptures to the sinful ones, and by destroying the maturation of non-virtue, he also emptied the hells of sentient beings, subduing those with wrong views. Also, in this fortunate eon, for the sake of countless sentient beings born as animals, he took the bodies of meat-eaters, bears, pigeons, monkeys, nagas, snakes, garudas, fish, turtles, foxes, rabbits, cows, horses, and so on, benefiting those sentient beings. Also, in this fortunate eon, among countless pretas, he took the body of a preta and benefited them. He was born into the house of a butcher, killing birds, pigs, and so on, and casting fishing nets. He was born into a family of bad lineage and even acted as a thief. Although Bodhisattvas do not have such evil deeds, in order to liberate sentient beings, by the power of great aspiration, they take such bodies and bring benefit and happiness to sentient beings. Also, he was born in a border region, engaging in non-dharma through the gates of the three poisons, not believing in the Three Jewels and karma, not respecting parents, relatives, elders, and so on, taking such a birth and benefiting sentient beings. Furthermore, he showed births as women, ugly bodies, bodies of desire, hatred, and ignorance, bodies of jealousy and stinginess, bodies of deceit and deception, hermaphrodites, eunuchs, and naked tirthikas who say there is no karma, and so on. In order to liberate sentient beings, by the power of showing the armor of great aspiration, he benefited sentient beings by engaging in doctrines that are seen as evil. This is spoken of in the Nirvana Sutra and other sutras.
