Merely for the sake of not generating even a tiny bit of merit, and for the sake of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, this meaningless body should be transformed into a body with meaning. The Rakshasa said: Who would believe that you would give up your entire body for eight lines of verse? The Brahmin said: Just as one exchanges an earthenware pot for a jeweled vessel, if one obtains a vajra-like body with this meaningless body, why would one not give up the body? Brahma, Indra, the Great Kings, and others are my witnesses. Furthermore, I take the Bodhisattvas and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the ten directions as witnesses, and for the sake of eight lines of verse, I will give up this body. The Rakshasa said: If you are so willing to give up your body, then listen well, and I will also reveal this verse. Hearing this, the Brahmin was delighted, took off the clothes he was wearing on his body and spread them on the ground, invited the Rakshasa to sit there, and with palms joined, requested him to reveal half of the verse. The Rakshasa said: Since what is born will cease, the pacification of these is bliss. Now you will hear the complete verse. If your practice of benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings is genuine, now is the time for you to give your body as alms. There, that Brahmin took this meaning deeply to heart, and wrote this verse on rocks, walls, trees, and roads everywhere. In order not to harm the flesh of his body, he fastened his clothes and climbed up a tree. At that time, the tree deity asked: Well done, noble being, what are you doing now? He thought that he wanted to repay the kindness of hearing the verse. The tree deity said: What benefit is there in hearing that verse? The Bodhisattva said: This verse is the Dharma that reveals emptiness by the Buddhas of the past, future, and present. I will give up my body for this Dharma, not for the sake of gain, fame, a universal monarch, gods, Brahma, or other happiness. I give it for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings. May sentient beings who are miserly abide in generosity after seeing me give up this body, and may those who are attached to generosity and are seized by pride also see this kind of giving up. After making this aspiration, he gave up his body like spit and earth and stones.

He jumped from the tree. From the space above, various sounds resounded to the very end of existence. That Rakshasa transformed into the body of Indra himself. He placed the Bodhisattva safely on the ground without him falling. Indra, along with the sons of the gods and the great Brahma king, prostrated at the feet of the Bodhisattva, praising him, saying: "Well done! Well done! Bodhisattva, you are truly one who exists for the benefit and happiness of immeasurable beings. For the great darkness of ignorance, you light the lamp of the great Dharma. We, in order to guard and protect the great Dharma of the Tathagata, have done harm that disturbed your mind, and we regret and confess. When you attain enlightenment in the future, we also hope to be liberated." Having said this, they disappeared. Thus, due to the cause and condition of giving up his body for half a verse, he completed the accumulation of twelve kalpas and attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment before Maitreya and became a Buddha. Again, in the past, this Bhagavan himself was a Brahmin boy named Dharma-seeker, endowed with virtuous qualities such as discipline, and was renowned. A Brahmin became jealous of him and said, "If you can jump into a pit of fire, I will proclaim the well-spoken words." When he agreed to do so, the Brahmins and householders prevented him from jumping into the fire pit, but he could not be stopped because he wanted to fulfill the teacher's intention. So, he prepared the fire pit and requested the Brahmin to proclaim the Dharma. That Brahmin said: "Always be delighted in giving. Always practice perfect discipline. Undertake the supreme abode of diligence. Attain the supreme and sacred Dharma through wisdom." He remembered these words well, gathered many people, and after saying these verses to them, he said, "May this giving that I have done for the sake of unsurpassed enlightenment not be without fruit." After speaking the truth, he jumped into the fire pit, and the fire went out. He sat on top of what had become a lotus pond and taught the Dharma endowed with the four qualities of pure conduct. That Brahmin's entire body was consumed by fire, and he fell into the great hell of sentient beings. The Dharma-seeker said

Pa. Venerable one, do not be discouraged! I shall protect you. By the truth of practicing enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings, may the flames consuming this Brahmin's body be extinguished, and may sentient beings be liberated from hell. Having said this, that Brahmin was liberated from hell. The Brahmin at that time was the householder Shri Gupta, so it was said. Furthermore, in the past, when the Blessed One himself, as the king named Brahma-datta, was about to give away all his possessions, he went with his virtuous queen and young eldest son to sit in a desolate place. Then, a flesh-eating demon, exceedingly hideous in form, sat cross-legged in the sky and said: I have heard the well-spoken Dharma from the Tathagata before; if you seek it, take it! The king said: Great being, I desire the well-spoken words. Whatever you desire, I will give it to you. The demon said: If you give me your three beloved ones—yourself, your son, and your wife—I will later speak the well-spoken words. The king said: What will these do? The demon said: They will be eaten, and then the Dharma will be taught. Then the king looked at his son on the right and his wife sitting on the left. The flesh-eating demon said: Great king, quickly give them away, and listen to the well-spoken words that will liberate you from samsara! Then, recognizing the king's extraordinary intention, the flesh-eating demon spoke this verse: For the sake of oneself and for the sake of others, if you desire happiness, do not commit evil. Whichever child desires happiness but commits evil, he will experience its fruits individually. So he said. Then the king thought: This well-spoken verse is truly marvelous! Even if I were to give away sons as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, I would still desire this verse. So he rose from his seat, grasped his son with his right hand, and began to give him away. At that moment, the form of the flesh-eating demon vanished, and he revealed himself as Indra, praising him, saying: You are truly a hero in giving! I am Indra; ask for whatever supreme thing you desire! The king said: Grant me the supreme state free from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, and so on. Indra said: That is not within my power; the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones,

I have obtained it. Ask for anything else you desire. To this, the king said: That those without power also desire power, even children understand. Disappointment is like an elephant sinking into the mud. Thus he spoke. Furthermore, in the past, the Bhagavan himself, known as King Excellent Color, ruled this world, possessing great power and splendor. He benefited beings with jewels and enjoyments, but did not benefit them with the sacred Dharma. Therefore, he thought: I should seek the sacred Dharma and liberate sentient beings. Having resolved thus, he proclaimed: If anyone in this world possesses the sacred Dharma and can show it to me, I will grant them whatever they desire. But no one could show it. Then, the king, distressed by sorrow, was heard by a son named Restful, who, in order to awaken him, transformed himself into a terrifying yaksha and said at the palace gate: Whoever desires to hear the Dharma, listen to me! Hearing this, the king was delighted, prostrated to the yaksha, placed him on a high seat, gathered ministers and many attendants, and sat down. The yaksha said to the king: Hearing the Dharma is very difficult. If you wish to hear the Dharma, this is not enough; you must allow me to devour your queen and prince, and then I will bestow the Dharma. Then, the king offered the yaksha the most beloved of his queens and his prince. The yaksha devoured them in front of the many attendants, in full view of everyone. The ministers wailed, but the king was so steadfast in his search for the Dharma that they could not dissuade him. After the yaksha had devoured them, he spoke the verses: All conditioned things are impermanent; as much as there is birth, there is suffering; the five aggregates are empty because they are without characteristics; there is no self and no belonging to self. Having said this, the king rejoiced and was delighted, and not even a hair's breadth of regret arose. Then, he wrote it down and proclaimed it throughout Jambudvipa, instructing everyone to learn it. Then, Restful Son transformed back into his own body, praised it as excellent, and returned the prince and queen as before. Furthermore, in a past life, the Bhagavan was King Kanishka in Jambudvipa.
