A king named Bali, who ruled over many small kingdoms and possessed immense compassion, thought to himself: I am the lord of many beings, and these many people also admire and rejoice in me. I should benefit them with the sacred Dharma. So, he instructed his ministers: Whoever can show me the sacred Dharma, I will give them whatever they desire. Then, a Brahmin named Leu Duji said: I possess the Dharma. The king showed him respect and desired to hear the Dharma. The Brahmin said: If you wish to obtain the Dharma, O king, you must offer a thousand lamps lit on your body, then I will teach it. The king was overjoyed and immediately sent messengers throughout Jambudvipa, proclaiming: King Kanshini Bali will, in seven days, for the sake of the Dharma, pierce his flesh and light a thousand lamps. All who heard this news were filled with grief and came to prostrate before the king, saying: We all rely on you as a blind person relies on a guide, or a child relies on its mother. If you light a thousand lamps on your body, you will surely lose your life. It is not right to abandon all the beings of this world for the sake of one Brahmin. The queen, five hundred crown prince regents, and millions of ministers pleaded with the king, but the king's vow was firm and could not be swayed. The king said: When I attain perfect enlightenment, I will liberate you all. Having said this, the king had holes made in his body, filled with wicks soaked in oil, making a thousand lamps. Then, the king said to the Brahmin: First teach me the Dharma, and then light the lamps. If I die, I will not hear the Dharma. At that moment, the Brahmin spoke this verse: All that is permanent will eventually perish, the high will eventually fall, meeting will eventually lead to separation, and birth will eventually lead to death. As soon as he spoke this verse, the king was overjoyed, without any regret, thinking: My seeking the Dharma is for the sake of attaining Buddhahood. In the future, when I attain perfect enlightenment, may the light of wisdom illuminate those who are obscured by ignorance. The moment he made this vow, the entire world shook violently. The Bodhisattvas descended from the sky and, seeing the Bodhisattva in such a state, wept and showered down a rain of flowers. Then, the divine witness Indra also praised him in various ways, saying: 'Great king, do you not regret this great suffering?' The king said, 'I have no regrets.' Indra said, 'How can anyone believe that you say you have no regrets when your body is trembling and you are so uncomfortable?' The king said, 'If I have no regrets from beginning to end, may the wounds on my body be healed as before!' As soon as he spoke, he was healed as before, without any wounds. ༈ Furthermore, in the past in this world, the Blessed One himself was born as a great king named Bhyimlinggali. He proclaimed that he would give whatever was desired for teaching the sacred Dharma. A Brahmin named Leu Duchu said, 'If you have a thousand iron nails hammered into your body, I will give you the Dharma.' He agreed to this, and proclaimed it throughout the country. Although everyone tried to stop him, they could not prevent it. First, he urged the Brahmin to teach the Dharma. The Brahmin said, 'All conditioned things are impermanent; all births are accompanied by suffering; all dharmas are empty and without a self; and even the concept of 'I' does not exist.' Pleased with this, the king had a thousand iron nails hammered into his body. Minor kings, ministers, and many attendants wept and fell to the ground. The gods of the sky showered down flowers and shed tears. Then Indra came there and asked, 'Do you do this difficult thing because you desire to be Indra or a universal monarch?' The king said, 'I do not desire the happiness of the three realms, but I do this accumulation of merit because I desire to become a Buddha.' Indra said, 'As I see it, the king's body is trembling and unbearable. Who will believe that you say you have no regrets when you say such things?' The king said, 'If I have no regretful thoughts, may my body be restored to its former state, without wounds!' As soon as he spoke, his body became as it was before, and the gods and humans rejoiced. ༈ Furthermore, in a previous life in this world, the Blessed One himself took birth as the son of King Brahma, the crown prince named Ngama Gam. He searched everywhere for the sacred Dharma.

When he was disheartened by not finding it, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, knowing his thoughts, transformed himself into a Brahmin and stayed at the gate of the king's palace, saying, "There is Dharma!" Then, he promised to give whatever he wanted to the one who taught the Dharma. The Brahmin said, "If you offer by jumping into a fire pit ten cubits deep, filled with burning flames, then I will teach the Dharma." He agreed to it and made a large fire pit. At that time, the king, queen, ministers, and palace attendants were unhappy and pleaded with the prince and the Brahmin not to do so, saying, "If you want our bodies, we will offer them." The Brahmin said, "I have no reason to insist that it must be done. It all depends on what the prince thinks. If he can do it, then I will teach the Dharma; if he cannot, then I will not teach it." At that time, the prince, for the sake of the Dharma, said, "In seven days, I will jump into the fire pit, so whoever wants to see it should come quickly." Messengers were sent throughout the country, and many petty kings and subjects gathered and pleaded with the prince not to do so, but the prince said, "I have been wandering in samsara for a long time and have transmigrated countless times. Even when born among gods and humans, I have been tormented by not knowing contentment with desires. In the lower realms, I have experienced various unbearable sufferings, and even though I have wasted my life, I have never generated even a little virtuous thought for the sake of the sacred Dharma. Now, I will offer this impure and inferior body for the sake of the Dharma. Do not hinder me from generating the unsurpassed and perfect Bodhicitta. I will give up this body to attain Buddhahood, and when I become a Buddha, I will give you the gift of Dharma." Knowing that his vow was firm, the assembly remained silent. Then the prince stood at the edge of the fire pit and said to the Brahmin, "Great teacher, please first teach me the sacred Dharma. If my life ends, I will not hear the Dharma." After making this request, the Brahmin spoke this verse: One should cultivate a mind of loving-kindness, abandon thoughts of hatred and anger, protect sentient beings with great compassion, wipe away the tears of all with loving affection, and cultivate great joy.

Indra and the King of Brahma each seized one of his hands, saying: All beings in Jambudvipa are free from the carelessness of unease because of the kindness of you, O King. Now, if you jump into the pit of fire, it is as if the parents of all your subjects have passed away. Why do you abandon all beings and jump into the pit of fire? The prince looked at the king of the gods and the many attendants, and said: Do not do anything to obstruct me from generating the mind of unsurpassed Bodhi. Having said this, all became silent. Immediately, he jumped into the pit of fire. At that time, the earth and sky shook violently, and the tears of the gods in the sky fell like rain. That pit of fire turned into a pool of flowers, and the prince sat upon a lotus, while the gods showered flowers until they were submerged up to their knees.
