Thinking, 'I will give everything.' Having made aspirations for unsurpassed enlightenment, he said, 'I will give my body.' When he said this, the earth shook in six ways, and the gods rained down flowers. Then, Indra thought, 'I cannot transform his body as it was before; I must generate his joy in moderation.' 'Do you not feel displeasure at cutting off flesh in this way?' The Bodhisattva said, 'I have no displeasure at all, for I am moved by compassion for beings born in hells and other places.' He said, 'Who would believe that?' The Bodhisattva said, 'By invoking truth, they will believe.' Indra said, 'Then, by invoking truth, make your body as it was before.' The Bodhisattva said, 'Having given away flesh in this way, there is no displeasure in my mind, and if I am moved by compassion for suffering beings, by that truth, may my body become as it was before.' As soon as he spoke, it became as it was before. Indra rejoiced and showed himself in his own form, saying, 'I did not intend to harm you; I merely did it to generate your joy. With such diligence, you will undoubtedly attain enlightenment without difficulty. At that time, remember me.' Having said this, he disappeared. Furthermore, the second story of King Śibi is similar to the previous basic plot. Indra said, 'What is the use of you being my student? I say I will cause you some trouble, and if you can do that, I will speak verses.' The Bodhisattva agreed to accept whatever trouble was caused, and then recited the verses as before. He lay down on a hollow wooden board pierced with needles four fingers long, enduring the pain of being squeezed, and made aspirations to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. The earthquake and other phenomena there, and the story of the body being restored to its former state by the power of truth, should be understood as described earlier. Furthermore, in the past, immeasurable and infinite eons ago, when the Buddha, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni, was teaching this Sutra of Nirvana, the Bhagavan himself, having been a Bodhisattva in the past, heard it and was very pleased, thinking, 'I should make some offerings.'

Being poor, he had nothing, and even selling his body did not work out because of his small merit. When he returned home, he met a man and asked him if he would buy his body. The man said, "I have a task that no one can do. If you can do it, I will buy it." He asked, "How?" The man said, "I have a serious illness, and a skilled doctor said that eating three ounces of human flesh every day would help. If you can do that, I will give you five gold coins." Hearing this, he was delighted and said, "Give me the coins and give me seven days to finish my work, and then I will do as you wish." The man said, "Seven days is not possible, I will give you one day." He took the coins and went to where the Buddha was, prostrated, and offered all that he had. He listened to this sutra with all his heart. At that time, although he was dull-witted, even after hearing this sutra, he only remembered one four-line verse: "When the Tathagata passes into Nirvana, All samsara is completely cut off, Whoever listens with one-pointed mind, Will always attain immeasurable bliss." He memorized this verse and returned to the patient's house, cutting off three ounces of flesh every day, but because he kept this verse in mind, he did not die. In this way, without interruption for a single day, he gave it for a month, and the patient was cured. His body also returned to its former state, and the patient was very happy and generated the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta. If the power of just one verse is so great, what need is there to mention hearing it all? Seeing that this sutra had such great benefits, he generated even greater aspiration, vowing to attain Buddhahood in the future, with the name Shakyamuni, and declared this to the gods and many attendants. Furthermore, in the past, countless eons ago, the Bhagavan himself was a great sage named Supreme. He lived in forests and mountains, possessed five kinds of clairvoyance, and always abided in loving-kindness and compassion. He thought to himself: "My abiding in loving-kindness brings joy to sentient beings and pacifies the three poisons and other afflictions accumulated from countless eons."

They cannot pacify the afflictions, nor can they generate the correct view of the noble ones, so he thought. Then, contemplating from where the correct view of the noble ones arises, he thought that it arises from hearing the words of others and from one's own proper attention. So, in order to seek everywhere the Dharma that he had spoken well, he went to all the villages and cities to search, but he did not find the Dharma. Then, a god of the demonic host went to him and said: I hold a verse of praise spoken by the Buddha. If you peel the skin from your body and dry it in the sun to make paper, and make ink by mixing it with your own blood, and make a pen from your own bones, and write that verse, I will give it to you. That hermit thought: When I was wandering in samsara, for the sake of desires and wealth, even if my body was cut into pieces by kings, enemies, and executioners, it did not benefit any sentient beings. Now, if I can obtain the Dharma with this meaningless body, then my attainment is the best attainment. Thinking this, he rejoiced and was delighted. He generated the perception of a teacher towards that god, and with a sharp weapon, he peeled the skin from his body and dried it in the sun to make paper. He mixed the blood that flowed from his body with ink. He extracted the bones and made them into pens. Then, he folded his palms towards that god and requested him to reveal that verse. That god of the demonic host, seeing such reverence and earnestness in that great hermit, felt ashamed and immediately disappeared. That great hermit, realizing that he had disappeared, thought: Even though I have not heard that verse, because of my reverence for the Dharma, this root of virtue of making paper, ink, and pen in this way will not be wasted and will not deceive me. However, with my unwavering sincerity, with a compassionate heart for all sentient beings, disregarding body and life, having made skin into paper in this way, etc., by the truth of reverence for the Dharma and by this truthful speech, I pray that those great masters who are speaking and teaching the Dharma in this world and in other worlds, please show your faces to me and allow me to hear the Dharma. As soon as he spoke, in that very instant,

Below, after passing thirty-two Buddha fields from this Buddha field, in a world called Immaculate, there lived a Tathagata named Immaculate Light King, who lived and taught the Dharma. He understood the extraordinary intention of that great ascetic, and seeing that he was also maturing the beings of the world, five hundred Bodhisattvas and one envoy went before that ascetic, pervading with great light, and a great rain of flowers fell. From all the branches, leaves, fruits, and flowers of the trees in that forest, the sound of Dharma teaching arose spontaneously. At that time, billions of trillions of gods gathered there. As soon as the light of that Buddha touched that ascetic, the ascetic's body became as it was before, without wounds, and radiant. That ascetic prostrated at the feet of the Buddha, circumambulated him, and with palms joined, said: 'Bhagavan is my teacher. I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Please teach the Dharma so that after I hear the Dharma, I may dispel the darkness of wrong views of sentient beings and teach the Dharma to attain right view.' The Tathagata then taught the Dharma to those retinues, beginning with the samadhi of accumulating all merits. Furthermore, he also taught the eight vajra verses, the eight Dharma gate verses, and the eight seed syllables, so that the supreme ascetic gained unceasing courage, unfailing memory, and was completely seized by the gods, and even the attacks of demons were repelled. He taught the Dharma for a thousand years in all towns and cities, maturing countless beings, and was then born in the pure land of Buddha Immaculate Light King. For details, one should know the Sutra of the Samadhi of Accumulating All Merits.
