Fearing separation, they uttered various cries of lamentation. There, the lord of the gods appeared in the form of an ascetic and said to him: Great sage, you have abandoned those gentle people and dwell in the forest. Now, uttering these unbearable cries of the pain of death, like an elephant's bath, what are you accomplishing here? The wise should laugh at you. No one has ever gained any benefit from people weeping over death. Knowing that all things are perishable, the former sages abandoned attachment to wealth and all assemblies of people and dwelt in the forest. You, dwelling in the forest, are inappropriately binding yourself with the noose of attachment. Since all compounded things are impermanent, and ultimately certain to change, attachment to gentleness only leads to one's own death. The power of constant companionship will not arise. In this cycle of existence, all suffering arises from attachment and clinging, and liberation is attained from non-attachment. The Buddha praised and revered, saying: Well said. There, the Bodhisattva said: Do not follow after the senses led by unpleasant signs, but with mindfulness equally turn your back on the realm of the senses, so that you may attain accomplishment, and do as the noble ones have taught, and do not become an ordinary person. The sage praised, saying: Well said. There, he appeared in the body of Indra, saying: I am the lord of the gods, and I will revive this child by my power. The Buddha also, because of illness, abandoned that young elephant in the herd of elephants at the time, and it became the lord of the herd. He gave the Buddha gourds filled with water and branches with fruit. The Buddha also touched its head with his hand and spoke beneficial teachings. Then, the Buddha remained single-mindedly in meditation in his hut. Also, in a past life, at Lake Anavatapta, the leader of the goose flock, there were Fullness and Full-faced, the two sons of Dhritarashtra. The elder brother, Fullness, was fierce and rude, threatening the geese, plucking their feathers, scratching them with his claws, and so on, so the geese...

He understood. He thought, "If this fierce Gamba is made the heir, the flock of geese will be destroyed, so I must find a way to deal with him." So he said to his two sons, each with five hundred attendants: "Go and look at the rivers, lakes, and ponds, and whoever comes to me first will be made the leader of the geese." The two of them raced each other, and when they arrived in Varanasi, they saw King Brahma's pond called Bhamsadana, which was higher and deeper than the lakes, adorned with various flowers and many flowering trees, and where various birds were singing. Gamba and his entourage landed there and began to play. Bhajin also said to his entourage, "You play here." He said, "I will first seize the kingdom and then come back and play together." Having said that, he quickly went and seized the kingdom of the geese. Then, five hundred geese surrounded him and landed on the Bhamsadana pond. Because he stayed there cautiously, people saw him and thought, "Such a leader of geese, with such an excellent form, has become the ornament of this pond, overwhelming all the birds." They were all happy and watched him. The ministers reported to the king. The king ordered, "Catch the birds, but do not harm them." When they were caught with a soft net, the king of the geese said: "I am firmly caught in the net, and I am under the control of men, and I can do nothing. In any case, quickly release the flock of geese, do not let them suffer." Having said that, all the geese except one flew away. Seeing that one was caught, but the other was not caught, but was depressed with grief, they were very surprised, so they took only that leader of the geese to the king. The other one, although not caught, went by himself because he loved him. There, they presented the leader of the geese to the king. They asked, "Why did you bring the other one?" They reported, "This deity, although not caught, came by himself." The king was very surprised by this and developed faith. The king placed the leader of the geese on a lion throne. That goose, in human language, instructed the king and his entourage to practice the ten virtuous actions. The king ordered that in his territory, no one should kill the sentient beings that walk in the water. Thus, the goose king Bhajin

He is the Blessed One himself. This story is similar to the tale of the Swan King, the protector of the land, which is also mentioned in the thirty-fourth chapter of the Jataka. Furthermore, in a previous life, this Blessed One was a deer named Golden Mane, who became the leader of the deer. He possessed an inconceivable radiance of body and was pleasing to the eyes and minds of all. Whoever saw him would stop and gaze at him. Knowing that people would stare at him in this way, he lived in seclusion, fearing harm from hunters and others. A crow asked him why he was so fearful and afraid, and the deer king replied, "My body arouses desire in all, so I fear harm from hunters and others." The crow said, "I am also afraid of owls, so we should protect each other. I will protect you during the day, and you protect me at night." Thus, they made a vow. Later, a man whose hands were tightly bound behind his back was carried away by the powerful currents of a river. He cried out, lamenting, "Who is there to save me from this fear? I will be his slave and till his fields." By chance, the deer king, surrounded by a herd of deer, came to the riverbank and met the man. The man cried out in despair, and the other deer fled. Bodhisattvas, even when reborn in degraded bodies, do not have degraded minds. The deer king, with a heart filled with compassion, immediately tried to enter the river. The crow, remembering its previous vow, followed him to protect him. The crow, knowing that he was trying to rescue the man, said, "Deer king, let him go, do not be rash. These people are ungrateful and do not remember kindness." However, the great Bodhisattva was unstoppable. He did not listen to the crow's words and entered the river. Like a mother to her only beloved son, he had the man ride on his back, carried him to the shore, untied his bonds, allowed him to catch his breath for a moment, and then said, "Child, go from this path wherever you please." Then, the man folded his hands and bowed to the deer king's feet.

Then (the man) approached (the deer) and said: Since you have granted me life, I will be your servant, even if I have to be your slave. The deer said: Now you are my servant, even if you don't act as my slave, you will be killed for your skin. Do not show me to others. Child, your task is this: my body is something that everyone in the world is very attached to and desires, so if you don't show me to anyone, it will be a favor to me. The man promised: I will do that. Then, he circled the deer king three times, approached its feet, and left. At another time, in that city called Varanasi, there was a king named Great Power, who ruled the kingdom with great wealth and power. His queen, named Moonlight, had vivid dreams, and everything she saw in her dreams would come true. One night, she was having fun and sleeping soundly in a luxurious bed, and in the last part of the night, she dreamed of a deer king of extremely beautiful form sitting on a lion throne and teaching the Dharma, as if she were seeing it with her own eyes. She felt very happy, got up from the bed, and spoke to the king. The king was also amazed by her true and wonderful dream, thinking: How could an animal born in an undesirable realm teach the Dharma? The queen made the king happy with joyful words and requested the king to make efforts to capture that divine deer. The king ordered the ministers: Summon all the hunters in my country here. When all the hunters came before the king, the king said: Wise ones, I have heard that there is a deer king of extremely beautiful form in my country, you must catch it with soft and loose traps, without harming it, and offer it to me. They said: God, we have been running around in the land of the gods for the sake of survival until now, but we have never heard of such a deer king before, let alone seen it. God, if you hear that it is in some direction, please tell us. In that case, we will certainly follow the orders of the gods.
