became, and became the best of a thousand virtuous nuns. The maidservant said: Whoever sees the root but does not see the Dharma, that person is completely separated from virtuous deeds. Having been honored and becoming intoxicated, becoming fond of delicious foods. Then, in that forest, the retinue Yaksha, elephant, and monkey came there to listen to the Dharma, and having heard those words, became very ashamed and unhappy. In order to show the Yaksha's purity, they swore an oath in front of them: For the sake of your root, whatever was mistaken, the great temples were decorated, the damage to the washing and draining gutters was repaired, and the sunlight illuminated them. The elephant said: Supreme Sage, whoever stole your root, that person is bound by six hundred strong ropes, like a wound stirred by a sharp iron hook, abandoning the delightful forest, and going to the edge of the village. The monkey said: Whoever stole your dried root, that person holds a garland of flowers and a stick, being beaten with a stick and thrown into the mouth of a snake, being tied to a post, may he live at home! That Bodhisattva spoke these words showing gentleness, discipline, and patience to all: What is destroyed that has not been destroyed? Who suspects you in this way? Enjoy the pleasing desires as you wish, and die living at home! Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, having realized the merits of those solitary places and few activities, from the bottom of his heart, disliked the actions of living at home and indulging in desires, and vehemently disparaged them, and having become a special place of tranquility, he felt respect and wonder, and showing his own form and radiance, he said intolerably: Wait a moment! For the sake of obtaining what do you strive in your mind, and for the sake of wanting happiness, you have no sleep in your mind, wanting to obtain correctly through ascetic effort, why do you curse those desires? The Bodhisattva said: Friend, desires have endless faults, listen briefly to how the Buddhas do not indulge in desires, relying on what. For the sake of desire, the world is bound and killed, sorrow burns, fears are many, suffering

Experience suffering. Even kings are destroyed because of desire. In the future, the Dharma will decline, and sentient beings will fall into hell. Because of desire, friends quickly generate resentment. Because of desire, those full of deceit and defilement walk the path. Fame declines, and in the future, one experiences suffering. The root of obtaining these is desire. Therefore, those who are superior, middling, and inferior should eliminate desire in this life and the next. Like a venomous snake that seems to want to benefit oneself but is actually enraged, the Buddhas do not rely on it. Then, the lord of the gods, thinking that those words were true, openly praised them. Through the power of those ascetics, he became joyful and confessed his faults to them, saying: If one examines, virtues will appear as expected. For the sake of examination, I have hidden the lotus roots here. These lotus roots reveal your conduct. The Buddhas, with truthful words, see beings as having protectors. Having said this, he offered those lotus roots to the Bodhisattva. Then, regarding the Bodhisattva's great conduct, with harsh words that no one could overwhelm with majesty, he said: We are not your relatives or friends, we are not dancers, we will not mock you. Why does the lord of the gods despise us so much, treating ascetics as if they were objects of amusement? Having said this, the lord of the gods, with great reverence, his face illuminated by the light of his earrings and diadem shaking, prostrated and begged for forgiveness: My instability in acting this way, the necessity of what I did has been said before. Like a father and teacher, please forgive this. Those whose eyes of knowledge are closed, naturally, even examination will be mistaken. Please forgive this for the benefit it brings me. Therefore, please do not hold this in your heart. Having said this, he immediately disappeared. At that time, the six younger brothers were, in order, Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Katyayana, Aniruddha, and Ananda. The sister was the color of a blue lotus. The female servant was Kubja Uttara, and the male servant was the householder Beauty. The yaksha was Mountain Bliss, the elephant was Sariloka, and the monkey was the one who offers honey.

Hundred Offerings is when the darkness is about to end! Thus it was said. Furthermore, in the past, the Blessed One himself was born into a Brahmin caste. He learned the Vedas, including their branches, and became wealthy with a reputation for scholarship and riches, and he delighted in giving. He recognized that the household life was the source of many faults, and like abandoning a root, he abandoned his household possessions. When he renounced and diligently practiced the discipline of asceticism, many people who delighted in the glory of his virtues gathered and came like shadows. Disliking gatherings, he dwelt in a secluded place in the south of the ocean on the continent called Kuru, abiding in asceticism and vows of austerity. Although he lived in the grove of asceticism, because he was very accustomed to giving in the past, he would offer roots, fruits, and pure water to those who came unexpectedly, satisfying them with the sound of "Welcome!", and he would make offerings to all ascetics, becoming known by the name Righteous Ascetic Agastya. In order to test him, Hundred Offerings gradually made all the edible roots and fruits in that monastery disappear. The Bodhisattva, being content and without attachment to food, not clinging to the body, and absorbed in meditation, did not consider the cause of their disappearance. He boiled and ate the young leaves of trees, and dwelt happily in his mind. Again, when Hundred Offerings made all the trees and shrubs in that direction leafless, he gathered the fallen old leaves and the few that remained, boiled them in water, and ate them. At that time, Hundred Offerings transformed into the form of a Brahmin and came to the Bodhisattva, making him happy, giving all those that he had found with difficulty and cooked, and happily spent the days and nights in meditation. The Brahmin came there for three days in this way, making him happy and offering him food. Hundred Offerings was amazed at this, thinking, "This one's asceticism is great; even if he desired the glory of the lord of the Thirty-Three, it would be accomplished by merely thinking of it," and so he became doubtful and fearful. Then, transforming his body into the form of a god, he asked, "What is the need and intention of practicing asceticism in this way?" The Bodhisattva replied, "I, in order to protect beings from birth, aging, sickness, and death,

Therefore, he remained in that way. Indra, thinking that this was not the glory he desired, generated joy and said to the Bodhisattva: "I will grant you the supreme, ask for whatever you desire!" The Bodhisattva said: "Even with a pleasing wife, children, and vast wealth, please make it so that the insatiable greed that knows no contentment does not exist in my heart." Indra was pleased by this, praised him, and desired to grant the supreme. The Bodhisattva, desiring to teach the Dharma, in the manner of asking for the supreme, said: "Please grant me the supreme that eliminates the anger that diminishes virtue and happiness." Indra was pleased by this, praised him, and desired to grant the supreme. The Bodhisattva said: "Please grant me the supreme of not seeing, not hearing, not associating with foolish people, and not experiencing the suffering of associating with them." Indra said: "Foolish people are objects of compassion, and you, who are compassionate, why do you not want to see them?" The Bodhisattva said: "No matter how hard one tries, it is difficult to benefit foolish people, because these people are attached to what is improper and engage in it. They are incompatible with taming and the conduct of the upright, and even if beneficial teachings are given, they become more confused. They are arrogant and ignorant, biased, and lack diligence, so even if one is compassionate towards them, knowing that they are not suitable as vessels for benefit, I do not even want to see them." Indra praised those well-spoken words, filled his hands with flowers, prostrated, and said he would grant the supreme. The Bodhisattva said: "Please grant me the supreme of seeing and hearing the steadfast, associating with them, and having the joy of speaking and fearlessness." Indra said: "Since you like the steadfast, what is the reason for that?" The Bodhisattva said: "The steadfast walk on the path of qualities and also lead others onto that path. They have no harsh words and are beneficial to others. They are without deceit, adorned with taming, and suitable as vessels for receiving beneficial teachings, therefore I like them." Indra praised him and, because of the well-spoken words, said, "Please ask for the supreme of the path of benefit." The Bodhisattva said: "You have abandoned the fault of exhausting food, and your mind is in harmony with the joy of giving, ask."
