They were diligent in activities such as brewing alcohol and growing vegetables. Then, those Brahmin boys said, "The Khenpo scolds those who desire much and praises those who desire little. In reality, the Khenpo has been very strict with us, so we should leave only one portion from the meatballs to the ladle, throw the rest into the constantly flowing river, and then go to where the Khenpo is." They did just that. After practicing pure conduct according to the Dharma, they went to the Teacher, prostrated, and sat down. The Teacher, knowing their thoughts and nature, taught them the Dharma that manifests the five kinds of clairvoyance. Again, in the past, when people's lifespan could reach eighty thousand years, the harms to their bodies were: heat and cold, hunger and thirst, desire, eating, and aging. At that time, in the garden of a king named 'Making Joy,' there was a banyan tree king that was very flourishing. Under that tree, there was a Brahmin like a great Sala tree, named Rimbi's Circumference. When this Bhagavan was still a Bodhisattva, that Brahmin taught the secret mantras of the Brahmins to about five hundred boys. The Brahmin Rimbi's Circumference went alone to a secluded place and had such thoughts in his mind: 'People's lives are short, and they must go to the next life. Since there is no one who is born and does not die, one must do good and practice celibacy. However, now people only place a small amount of thought on doing good and practicing Dharma. I should renounce completely.' He thought like this. He told this to the Brahmin boys and asked them what they were doing. They said, 'We know very little, and we rely on the Khenpo, so we will also renounce like you.' Then, the Khenpo, knowing that the time had come, had them all renounce. Then, Rimbi's Circumference abandoned the five obscurations and abided, pervading everything with the mind of the four immeasurables. At that time, the Teacher was known as Rimbi's Circumference. He said to the Brahmin boys: 'Brahmin boys, people's lives are short, full of afflictions, not long-lasting, and also full of suffering. For example, just as a dewdrop attached to the tip of a blade of grass quickly disappears when the sun rises, so too, people's lives are not long-lasting and are full of suffering.'

Just as drawing pictures on water, writing with a stick on water, a vessel thrown into water will break, a vajra thrown into water will sink, a stick thrown into the sky will quickly fall, and however much weaving is done, it will eventually reach the end, similarly, life will not last long and will eventually face death. Just as livestock led to the slaughterhouse are closer to the slaughter with each step, and just as a piece of meat is boiled in a large amount of water, and just as a rushing and deep river flowing from a mountain sweeps away plants, so too is life. I, the Brahmin boy, abide from a mind of loving-kindness to equanimity. He urged them to abide in loving-kindness and so forth. The teacher, the wheel's circumference, lived for as long as eighty thousand years, and in the same way, he taught the Dharma of such short lives to people, so that all, both self and others, would diligently engage in virtuous Dharma with mindfulness, and generate meditation and the realms of Brahma. Furthermore, in a previous life, the Bhagavan himself was born into an impeccable great Brahmin family. He had six younger brothers, whose qualities matched his, and one sister, making seven in all. That Brahmin studied the Vedas and the near-Vedas with their branches, and gained a reputation for being learned. He revered his parents like gods, and taught his brothers knowledge like a teacher and father, and lived at home in accordance with the Dharma. After a long time, when their parents passed away, he calmed the grief of their passing and said to his brothers: Although I wish to stay together for a long time, the great sorrow of separation due to death will inevitably come to all in this world. I wish to renounce, so you should live at home according to the Dharma. Hearing this, the brothers, with eyes full of tears, said: If you abandon us on top of the grief of losing our parents, wherever you go, we will also go. Thus, the six brothers and the sister, for his sake, abandoned the great wealth of their home, friends, and family, and renounced in the forest of asceticism. The close male and female servants also renounced following them. In that great monastic forest, flowers

On the shore of a great lake filled with water, they built separate leaf huts, not close to each other, in order to engage in meditation. They gathered before the Bodhisattva who possessed the five superknowledges to listen to the Dharma, and in order to enter the secret instructions of meditation, he would teach the faults of desire, the praise of solitude and contentment, the faults of laziness and so on, and the qualities of faith and so on. That servant girl of theirs, being respectful and affectionate, would take out lotus roots from that lake, divide them equally on large lotus leaves, indicate the time with the sound of knocking, and then return. Those ascetics, having finished the rituals of recitation and fire offering, would go one by one in order of seniority, take the lotus roots in order, eat them in their respective huts according to the ritual, and remain devoted to meditation. They would not look at each other except for the time of listening to the Dharma. In this way, with such discipline and conduct, they became famous for their joy of extreme solitude and their absorption in meditation, which was heard by Indra, the lord of the gods, who went to examine them and saw their conduct. Then, he made the lotus root as white as an elephant calf's tusk, which was the Bodhisattva's share, disappear after the servant girl had returned. When the Bodhisattva went there, he found that there was no lotus root in the first place, and seeing the lotus leaves scattered and piled up, he thought, 'Who has taken my share of the lotus root?' Without being angry or upset, he returned to the leaf hut and meditated properly. He thought that if he told the other ascetics, they might become unhappy, so he did not speak. The other brothers thought, 'This one has already taken his share.' Then they each took their own share, ate it in their huts, and meditated. Likewise, on the second, third, fourth, and fifth days, his share was made to disappear, but he was not greatly disturbed, but was very peaceful. In the evening, those ascetics came to him in order to listen to the Dharma, and they saw that his body was emaciated, his cheeks and eyes were sunken, his complexion was poor, his voice was weak, and his body was frail, but he was still steadfast.

Seeing the increase of the qualities of perfect peace, he asked what was wrong, and then recounted what had happened. Then those ascetics thought, 'It is impossible for such an unrighteous thing to exist.' Saying this, they were displeased and amazed, and he bowed his head in shame. Because the realm of entering knowledge was obscured by the power of Indra, he did not know what had happened. Then, the younger brother of the Bodhisattva, in order to show that he had no attachment in his mind and that he was pure, made a special vow: 'Brahmin, who has taken your root? May you have houses adorned with the signs of wealth, find a pleasing wife, and have sons and grandsons!' His younger brother said: 'Brahmin, who has taken your root? May you wear garlands, necklaces, sandalwood, and fine clothes, possess ornaments touched by your son, and enjoy inexhaustible wealth!' Another said: 'May the one who has taken your root obtain wealth and grain from plowing fields, be very happy with sons and speech, not care about life, and be happy at home!' Another said: 'May the one who has taken your root, being greedy, be tamed by the king like a slave, be greatly revered with the crown passed down through generations, and rule the entire earth like a king!' Another said: 'May the one who has taken the root of someone like you become an advisor to the king, bring happiness and well-being with mantras and the like, and be similarly honored by the king!' Another said: 'May the one who desires the root but does not desire qualities, be well-versed in the Vedas and able to preach, and as an ascetic, be worshiped by all the villagers with great expectations!' A friend said: 'Desiring the root of someone like you, approximately four hundred sacred and prosperous regions, obtained from the kings and enjoyed, may he die without being freed from desire!' A slave said: 'Living meagerly for the sake of the root, may he become the leader of friends among friends, not be punished by the king's penalties, and be happy with women's songs and dances!' A sister said: 'May the one who has taken the root of someone like you become the queen of the king, her appearance and splendor blazing with glory.'
