People are adorned with pure discipline, and if I possess these, I make the supreme aspiration. Indra said: Here too, you have spoken well, becoming a source of jewels. Moreover, all that you have aspired will come to pass as you wish. For this well-spoken word, I will also grant you a supreme gift. The Bodhisattva said: You are the supreme among all the gods, if you grant me a supreme gift that will benefit me, I aspire to you that, to be clear, you will not come to my presence again in the future. Having said this, Indra, astonished and ashamed, said: For the time being, those who recite and practice asceticism desire to be in harmony with me. I came desiring to grant you a supreme gift, why do you not wish to see me in that way? The Bodhisattva said: This is not a matter of disrespect or irreverence, nor is it that I do not wish to meet you. But seeing a supreme divine form like you, if I dwell in busyness, although you are peaceful and pure, I fear that my asceticism will decline because of it. Having said this, Indra prostrated to him, circumambulated him, and then disappeared. Then, when dawn broke, the Bodhisattva saw the various divine foods prepared by Indra, the hundreds of Pratyekabuddhas invited by Indra, and the many young sons of the gods who were preparing to come to offer alms, and he made offerings to those great sages. Thus, even dwelling in a grove of asceticism, delighting in generosity becomes an adornment. In this way, not being attached to food, and not even wanting to see the lord of the gods, what need is there to mention other gatherings? Therefore, it should be understood that delighting in solitude in this way is how meditation is accomplished. Again, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was born as the son of a great and wealthy king. Because the king's previous sons had all died after birth, he thought that this was harm caused by non-humans, and in order to protect this son, he placed him in an iron house adorned with precious jewels, and performed protective and auspicious rituals derived from the Vedas, and thus he was saved and named Iron House Dweller. He was

Even when on land, the people of that region were happy and had pleasing appearances. With virtues such as compassion and intelligence, they made all beings very happy, and by the power of merit, they dwelt enjoying great festivals equal to the wealth of the gods. During the festival of the lotus flower, he rode in a fine chariot adorned with jewels and various silks, and decorated with banners, drawn by excellent horses. Accompanied by many attendants adorned with clothes and jewels, he went forth while the musical instruments were being played. The people looked at the prince, marveling and uttering auspicious wishes, and were joyful. Due to the force of previous habit, seeing many aspects of the festival, he thought to himself: Alas! The world is afflicted! Its state is unstable and unpleasant. Even this splendor of the lotus flower will become impermanent. How strange that beings who dwell in such a state do not feel fear! All paths are blocked by the Lord of Death, yet they enjoy themselves without any apprehension. Old age, sickness, and death, the enemies that cause harm, exist with great and immeasurable power. If the next world is destined to be filled with suffering, how can any conscious mind feel joy in this? Great clouds, lightning flashing like golden chains, and the sound of the great oceans, the great act of pouring down heavy rain, even when gathered together, will eventually dissipate. In this way, observing the impermanent nature of the container and its contents, he no longer felt joy in those sights, and returned to his own dwelling. He requested his father, the king, to go to the forest of asceticism. The king, loving his son, was very displeased and said: Why should we abandon our only son? Do you doubt me or have a delusion? Or is there any other harm? Tell me, and I will try to prevent it. The Bodhisattva said: I am full of love for you, how could I have doubts about you? There is no other harm either. I am afraid of death, so I thought in this way. Because there is no way to prevent death, therefore... etc., he elaborated in detail on the various faults of death.

Therefore, the king said, "If the fear of death cannot be avoided in this way, then what is the use of fully embracing the Dharma and going to the forest? Will the Lord of Death not come to your forest? Do those who are upright and abide in the Dharma not die in the forest? If everything dies like this, then leaving home and going to the forest is of no use." The Bodhisattva said, "Although dwelling in the forest and at home, doing evil and practicing Dharma, all deaths are the same, it is possible to practice Dharma in the forest. Even if those who practice Dharma die, they will not experience the suffering of sorrow, and after death, they will go to a good place. At home, it is difficult to practice Dharma because of the accumulation of many faults, and if one does things that are not in accordance with the Dharma, great sorrow will arise at the time of death, and after death, one will fall into evil realms." After the king heard these detailed accounts, he also agreed, abandoning the desirable wealth of the kingdom like discarding grass, and dwelling in the forest of asceticism, he cultivated the four meditations and the four immeasurables, and also placed worldly beings in them. When his life came to an end, he was born in the world of Brahma. Therefore, the mind of meditation is accomplished by the path of non-attachment to the qualities of desire. Therefore, one should be inclined to follow the meditation of non-attachment and dwelling alone in solitude. Furthermore, in the past, this Blessed One was a great man of the Brahmin caste, revered by the king, with great wealth, and worldly people loved him like a god. He performed various rituals and possessed vast knowledge and a reputation for being learned. Due to the power of past habits, he did not like the household life and wanted to renounce and go to the forest. So, he shaved his head, put on saffron robes, and when he renounced, his wife also renounced. His wife also wanted to follow him, but he said to her, "You will not be able to stay in the forest of asceticism. It is better to live together with other ordained women somewhere else." He said this three times, but because she was very attached to him, she followed him anyway. Gradually, they came to a pleasant and secluded forest, where they settled down and meditated. One afternoon, the Bodhisattva was weaving a mat, and the woman was not far from him, her body's radiance shining like a goddess.

And, he meditated as instructed in the essential points of mindfulness. Then, the king of that country, while wandering in that forest during springtime, came to the Bodhisattva, exchanged pleasantries, and sat down nearby. When he saw the woman, he became enamored and thought, "Even if she is his wife, I will seize her." So, he tested whether he possessed the power of asceticism. He thought, "If he does, I must not despise him." If he were a being controlled by desire, he would certainly have no power of asceticism. If he were free from desire, he would not look at her. So, he said to the Bodhisattva, "O renunciant, there are many deceitful and oppressive people in this world. What will you do if your wife is harassed by others in this secluded forest? If you generate anger, it contradicts the Dharma, so why not keep her in a village?" The Bodhisattva said, "King, you have said much. If that happens, listen to what I will do. If someone, arrogant with pride, harms me without examination, like thick dust suppressed by rain, I will not let him go while I am alive." When he said this, the king thought, "This man is very attached to his wife and has no power of asceticism." So, he despised him and began to take the woman to the king's palace. The woman cried loudly, lamented towards her husband, and was placed on a chariot and taken away. Although the Bodhisattva saw this, he subdued his anger with the power of discernment and remained undisturbed, sewing the cloth for wiping. Then the king said, "You said earlier that you would not let him go while you were alive. Now, when I seize your wife, you are powerless and subdued. What is the use? Show your power! If not, your boast is a meaningless claim of not knowing your own limits." The Bodhisattva said, "King, I will not make my vow meaningless. Please know this. Whoever harms me, even if they flee, I will not let them go. I will also pacify them openly. Therefore, I will act as I have vowed."
