There, the king realized that the Bodhisattva possessed the virtues of asceticism, and thought, 'It seems I didn't understand what he said before.' So he said to the Bodhisattva: 'What is it that you have not given up, that is so wavering, and who is it that harms you? Just as rain covers dust, what have you thoroughly pacified?' The Bodhisattva said, 'When born, virtue is not manifest, and when not born, virtue is manifest. That anger that harms me, I have not let it escape.' And so on, speaking of the faults of anger, which struck the king's heart, so he confessed his faults and also asked forgiveness from that ordained woman, and then let her go, and he himself vowed to be a servant of the Bodhisattva. Thus, if anger and resentment are subdued, then enemies will be subdued. If anger increases, enemies will also increase. It should be known that those without the thorns of anger and attachment will be able to abide with a mind of stainless contemplation. Furthermore, in the past, when the Blessed One himself was transformed into a wandering Bodhi, when he was living at home, he was skilled in various arts and sciences praised by the world. Later, when he became ordained, he especially studied the doctrines of the Dharma with diligence to benefit others, and attained the position of a teacher. Wherever he went, he was revered by scholars, kings, Brahmins, householders, heretics, and all the ordained. That great being also wandered everywhere to benefit others. He went near the territory of a certain king. That king had heard the fame of the virtues of that Bodhisattva from afar, so he made a place for him in one part of his garden and treated him with respect. The Bodhisattva also taught them the Dharma. Those who were jealous of his virtues and fame, in order to make the king dislike the Bodhisattva, schemed and said: 'This wandering Bodhi is a cunning man who uses gentle means to conceal his true intentions. He must have been sent as a spy by a certain king under the sun.' This person possesses the essence of Dharma, knowing

He said, "He pleases with flattery, and uses methods to demean and deceive." The king, also somewhat disbelieving, saw that his affection and respect for him had diminished, and knowing that the king was displeased, he took the implements of a wandering ascetic, a three-pronged staff and a bowl, and prepared to leave. The king, for a moment showing a subdued demeanor, said, "What offense have I committed that you are preparing to leave?" The Bodhisattva said, "I am not angry because of dying without purpose, nor because of diminished respect. King, you have not become a vessel for the Dharma, and being full of deceit, I shall depart from here." Then the king led a large dog that he had brought, which, being angry, showed its fangs. The Bodhisattva said, "Great King, this dog used to be familiar with me, but now, showing its fangs and being angry, even these animals show your intention. Have I not heard disrespectful words from you through it? This too is a follower of your retinue!" Having said this, the king, ashamed and with his head lowered, thought, 'This one is clever and will know; I shall deceive him.' He said, "It is true that I argued with you in the assembly. Because of necessity, I forgot. Please forgive me and do not depart!" The Bodhisattva said, "Now is the time to leave. If I do not leave myself when respect diminishes, I may be driven away later. I am not leaving unhappily, nor will I abandon the beneficial love that has been shown. To be ungrateful for what has been done, and to have unstable friendship, is the worst among people. Therefore, in order to preserve the end of this friendship, I shall take my leave for a while." The king said, "If you cannot but leave, come here so that I may see you again, and look upon me with kind eyes. It is not right to hold a grudge because of lineage." The Bodhisattva said, "Great King, this world is full of obstacles, so I cannot promise that I will definitely come. But if I have the opportunity to come, I will look upon your face." Having said this, he showed respect and departed. Knowing that relying on householders would bring unhappiness, he diligently meditated in a secluded place in a monastery.

Before attaining a firm footing, he had acquired the four meditations and five supernormal knowledges. Out of compassion for that king, he observed how he was doing. But his ministers could not bear to investigate the cause, so they said there was no cause. The lotus stalk has causes such as leaves, flowers, etc., and colors, shapes, tactile sensations, etc. What is the cause of the various patterns on a bird's wings? They thought that things arose naturally. Some also thought that it was created by Ishvara. Some only pursued the happiness of this life. Because the ministers each held different views, they led the king astray. The king, listening to others, was about to fall into the abyss of wrong views. Out of compassion for him, he thought of a way to stop him. He conjured up a large monkey from his place of asceticism, and magically skinned the monkey. In order not to attract attention, he put on the monkey skin and went to the gate of the king's palace. At the palace gate, a crowd of people holding weapons were stationed, and inside, family members, Brahmins, and ministers were seated in order, and the king was sitting on a lion throne inside. The king greeted him, treated him with respect, and with sweet words invited him to sit on the prepared seat. The king asked: Venerable one, who offered this monkey skin? The Bodhisattva replied: I found it myself, no one offered it. Because practicing religion on the ground covered with kusha grass is not effective for religious ceremonies, I saw this big monkey in that forest. I thought, if I take its skin as a tool for practicing Dharma, whether sitting or lying down, I can accomplish the Dharma, so I killed that monkey and skinned it. The king assumed a gentle and obedient manner, and without saying a word, lowered his head in shame. Those ministers, who had previously been intolerant of the Bodhisattva, now seized the opportunity, smiled, and said to the king: Alas! Look at this person's love for the Dharma! Living in the ascetic forest, he actually killed such a big monkey alone, it's really amazing! May your asceticism be accomplished! The Bodhisattva, without getting angry, said: You yourselves

It is not appropriate to blame me without considering good views. If one harms others with words that contradict one's own views, then one will be considered unwise. Having said this, he rebuked the minister who believed in no cause, saying: If beings arise naturally and without cause, why do you blame me? If a monkey dies naturally, how can I be guilty? If I am guilty, then it must be caused by something. Therefore, it is appropriate to abandon this talk of no cause, and it is not appropriate for you to say such things. If lotus stems and the like arise without cause, why do they not always arise without cause? Therefore, if water and seeds and the like exist, they grow, and if they do not exist, they do not grow, so know that they have a cause. Furthermore, if one says that there is no reason for proving no cause, then one contradicts oneself by one's own assertion. If no cause is established without any reason, then it would be established merely by making a claim, which is impossible, so merely claiming no cause is of no benefit. If some people say that everything is without cause merely because they have not seen the cause of that cause, it is not appropriate, for how can one speak contrary to what one clearly sees, that some things have a cause? If one has not seen a cause anywhere or at any time, how can one be certain that the cause does not exist, or how can one state a reason? It is just words without reason. If one says that it is merely that one has not seen it, then when the sun sets, even though the orb of the sun exists, it becomes invisible due to other causes, do you also think that it does not exist? Furthermore, you desire happiness and do not desire suffering, and while relying on the king for happiness, how can you always say that there is no cause? If there is definitely no cause, then why is there any blame for my killing the monkey? Thus, he silenced those who spoke of no cause, and then summoned those who said that Ishvara (自在天) was the cause, saying: O long-lived ones, you should not blame me, for if you believe that everything is done by Ishvara, then the monkey was also killed by Ishvara, so why should I be displeasing? Why do you attribute the faults of others to me? If you say that the monkey was not killed by Ishvara out of compassion, then how can Ishvara be the cause of beings?
