Da. Having heard the good teachings, I understood the truth as it is. I have thoroughly explained the unborn. Thus he spoke. Therefore, in order to benefit all beings, I requested. Therefore, the great Bodhisattva, wishing to benefit all sentient beings, should be skilled in meditation. One should be skilled in the arising of meditation. Those roots of virtue that know arising, that know all arising, and any roots of virtue that are truly accumulated, should be extremely placed. They should be extremely grasped. Thus he spoke. Again, in the past, when the Blessed One was incarnated as a minister of the King of Kashi, named Spotted Eye. He was skilled in all the teachings, and possessed excellent qualities such as steadfastness and gentleness. He taught the assembly of people what to accept and reject, and became like a teacher. However, in order to eliminate the faults that displeased the King of Kashi, he spoke to the king in a secluded place: "O deity, what faults of other kings, such as the noble-bodied king, cannot be well changed? The faults of drinking alcohol, such as becoming angry, crying, and speaking nonsense after drinking, and becoming the cause of various diseases; the faults of gambling, such as becoming mentally disturbed by the fear of victory and defeat after being attached, losing meaning, and becoming ill from suppressing sleep and urination; snakes, flesh flies, heat, cold, hunger, thirst, fatigue, etc., as well as falling from a horse on the road, encountering the fear of enemies, etc., and the extremely unpleasant and base actions, the faults of hunting; and the loss of the power of autonomy, the great darkness of sin, the fire of desire burning oneself, and being overly attached to women is the suffering of humans, and faults such as harsh words that generate malice like flesh-eating demons, will exhaust the glory of the rulers. Therefore, if one can restrain the senses and abide in the right way, then all the glory of the steadfast will increase." The king replied: "Although I cannot restrain the senses like you, in order to preserve your face, the beneficial advice of teachers like you should not be transgressed." The Bodhisattva went to his own house and again with the consorts.

Therefore, this teaches the principle of self-mastery. Here, there is no army of a king adorned with physical form. Other great kings not only have the fear of enemies, but also the faults of kingship are many, happiness is little, and ultimately the fear is great, leading to falling into evil realms such as hell. Therefore, abandon kingship, and you should renounce in a peaceful forest place. Thus, he explained the faults of desire and the qualities of the Dharma that turns away from desire. The king, therefore, had faith in his miraculous power and was pleased with the teachings. He immediately returned all the ornaments to the charioteer, and he himself renounced at the feet of the Bodhisattva. Relying on the Bodhisattva's instructions, he subdued his senses, practiced austerities, gradually attained the mind of meditation, and dwelt in the bliss of supreme peace. When the charioteer and others went to the city, the people asked with agitated minds where the king was. They replied, "He has renounced in the presence of the one with eyes." To this, the queen and all the king's retinue wailed. Thereafter, the ministers stopped the mourning and performed the enthronement ceremony for the eldest son, making him king. Thus, if one possesses meditation, one will attain miraculous powers. By this, he tames the beings to be tamed and teaches them the Dharma. Therefore, one should respect the place of the Bodhisattva's qualities. Furthermore, in a past life, the Bhagavan himself transformed into an ascetic in a forest, who was skilled in all treatises and guided a multitude of disciples. He meditated and resided in a place surrounded by leaves. At that time, due to a long drought, the plants and trees withered, and the ascetics became emaciated and desired to go to the city. The Bodhisattva then spoke of the faults of the city, saying, "For a while, partake of whatever food I have, and afterwards, also take food from here, and do not abandon this forest." Thereafter, when the food was exhausted, the ascetics gathered there. The Bodhisattva, holding an earthen begging bowl, went by miraculous power in an instant to a disagreeable place in the north, took back food as delicious as nectar, and gave it, causing all the ascetics to be joyful and full of energy. Thus, he gave food every day, and

Then, with truthful words uncorrupted by my desired conceptualizations, he said, "Let the lord of the gods send down rain!" As soon as he spoke, a great rain fell, causing all grains, fruits, and trees to flourish, making everyone content. He gave them Dharma talks, turning them away from evil paths and establishing them on the right path. They praised that great being, saying, "You have surely placed us in goodness, first with material generosity and later with the generosity of the Dharma." And they began to meditate. Furthermore, in the past, in the land of King Brahma-given, in the forest of Varanasi, the Blessed One himself was born as the leader of five hundred ascetics, a sage. Through the power of his loving-kindness, all who dwelt in that forest lived in mutual friendship and without harm. There, one ascetic, emaciated by a wind disease, whose thought was for kingship, he saw with his divine eye. He asked him what kind of illness he had and further said, "The roots and so forth of this ascetic forest cannot pacify the wind disease, so the broth of livestock meat is needed." He himself conjured up a livestock, saying, "Slaughter this and drink the meat broth." Then he said, "Khenpo, this is contrary to the Dharma, it is not proper for ascetics to sustain themselves by killing sentient beings." The Bodhisattva said, "If you do not even eat the meat of a single livestock killed out of compassion for your own life, when you become king, will it not be contrary to the Dharma if you kill livestock and even destroy innocent wild animals with weapons? Where will your compassion be at that time? Therefore, do not rejoice in kingship, which is the root of many faults and sufferings." He spoke of how he, whose mind had become defiled, would again experience suffering in the lower realms and so forth. Then he praised, saying, "Khenpo, you know my thoughts," and turning away from that thought, he said again, "How shall I deal with this mind that is distracted by the realm of ascetic women?" He said, "The eyes, limbs, faces, and other things of women that appear beautiful will also become undesirable with age, being of a nature that is decaying and impure. Even so, people do not

Because he taught the Dharma in the manner that all those with knowledge obtain extremely much suffering from attachment, that ascetic went to another monastery. Through the instructions of his lama, he attained the four dhyanas and five superknowledges, and then returned and praised that great being with words of praise and gratitude. Furthermore, in the past, the two brothers, sons given by Robbery to the attendant of King Pure Giving, named Robbery Son and Robbery Peak, went to the forest and attained the five superknowledges. They traveled in the sky by means of miraculous powers, and were worshiped by all beings, including the king. Once, when the king had gone elsewhere, the king's daughter served the two of them. Robbery Peak was deceived by the act of attachment and engaged in sexual conduct, and his miraculous powers declined. His elder brother, Robbery Son, dwelling in the forest, knew of this and brought him back to his own abode, and again made him possess the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Of these, Robbery Son was the Blessed One himself, and Robbery Peak was the Black Elephant. That is, the ordained one was deceived by his own wife by means of a trick and again returned to lay life. The Blessed One again took him away, ordained him, and caused him to attain the state of an arhat. Again, in the past, in a time beyond countless eons, the Blessed One himself, when he became a king named "Protector of All Kings," had sixty-eight thousand consorts. All of them were like goddesses, loving like mothers, respectful, and obedient, possessing qualities. While dwelling among them, he perfected up to the fourth dhyana, and having arisen from equipoise in the fourth dhyana, he saw that sentient beings were born in the three lower realms because they were extremely attached to the five objects of desire and committed sinful deeds. Even when they became gods and humans, they would experience short lives and so forth. Furthermore, he also saw that some sentient beings had long lives and others short lives, some had high birth and others low birth, some had great glory and others little glory, some had great wealth and others little wealth, some had great wisdom and others little wisdom, some strove for what is constant and others strove to turn away from what is constant. Then he thought to himself: "This path is not in harmony with the land. I shall lead these beings onto the path of perfect enlightenment."
