So it was done. There, King Rirab, with his four legions, went to the place of the army of Gawa Gombu, desiring battle. There, Gawa Gombu also boarded a large ship like a great celestial palace, surrounded by a crowd of singing people, enjoying playing and bathing in the waters of the Ganges. Afterwards, at the time of anointing and eating, the sound of drums was made, and those sounds, like the roar of a dragon, were like the earth shaking. King Rirab was agitated and asked Lonen, "What is this fellow doing?" He said, "This drum sound is Gawa Gombu creating heavenly food and drink, wanting to eat it together with his family." Rirab said, "If his power of merit is so great, won't he cause a burning thunderbolt to fall upon me and my retinue? Surely this 'ཚའུ' of ours is endowed with patience." There, Gawa Gombu, knowing that King Rirab was suspicious, thought, "I should take hold of him with a trick." Although people proclaimed, "You are acting unfriendly to me in this way," if "you do not befriend me, I will abandon patience and kill you with a burning thunderbolt." King Rirab was frightened and became friendly. Gawa Gombu invited King Rirab to his own place, gave him respect according to the ritual, and praised him in various ways. Gawa Gombu also made him abide on the path of Dharma with stories of Dharma, and then returned to his own city. The reason why Gawa Gombu obtained the wealth of the gods is that in the past, in Varanasi, he was a Brahmin named Tsawa Chen. He offered medicine and mixed porridge to a solitary Buddha afflicted by illness, and he held an umbrella for the sake of shade, which was his karmic result. The minister Lonen was given by the gods," said the Blessed One. Furthermore, in the past, in a forest adorned with various trees, birds, and herds of animals, when the Blessed One himself became an elephant king with six tusks, the master of the herd, wonderful like a white cloud, he took good care of the herds of elephants.

There were two female elephants named Excellent and Extremely Excellent. Once, in the sky filled with the sound of thunderous clouds, some Vidyadharas, surrounded by delightful young women and attendants, dropped from their walking hands a golden lotus that originated from Lake Madrosa, the size of a chariot wheel spoke, filled with fragrance, and it fell in front of the elephant master who lived alone on that forest mountain. He picked up the lotus and thought, 'I will give it to whichever of the two female elephants comes first.' Extremely Excellent came first, and he gave her the lotus. She respectfully placed it on her head. Later, Excellent came and saw the lotus on Extremely Excellent's forehead, and thought, 'The elephant master gave the lotus to this concubine and not to me.' She became jealous, left the elephant master, and went elsewhere, not eating grass, not drinking water, and became distraught. She saw a Pratyekabuddha meditating in the middle of the Rock of Mountain-Breaker, wearing red Dharma robes, and offered him water lilies taken from the ocean. Afterward, that female elephant stayed near the Mountain-Breaker, and made the aspiration: 'By the merit of offering to the Pratyekabuddha, in order to kill this fragrant elephant, may I become the queen of a king.' Then, she jumped off a cliff and died, and was reborn as a king's daughter who remembered her previous life. She had an extremely beautiful form and was made the queen of another king. One day, she pretended to be afflicted by a severe fever, and her husband was very displeased. She said, 'This illness of mine cannot be cured even with excellent sandalwood, etc. If I can obtain the tusk of the great elephant master at Mountain-Breaker, use its ivory shavings to make bedding, and adorn my body with the pearls on the tusk, this illness will be cured, otherwise nothing will help.' Her husband, the king, thought, 'This queen must have seen or heard of this in a previous life, I must do as she says.' So he summoned a hunter and said, 'Go and get the tusk of that elephant, and I will give you great wealth.' The hunter said, 'If I can do it, I will.' The queen said, 'I know how to please that great elephant, it is to become a renunciate.'

Having instructed thus, "Disguised, be sure to strike the vital point with a poisoned arrow." Having gone as instructed, while walking in that forest, a herd of elephants saw him and became suspicious, so they spoke to the elephant master in this way. The Bodhisattva said, "This should not be doubted. This holds the banner of the Muni, symbolizing the path of shame and peace, so it should be observed." So he said. Then the hunter, hiding behind a tree, waited and struck the elephant master with a poisoned arrow. Seeing his body covered in blood, the herd of elephants and the female elephant were extremely agitated and sorrowful, and they pulled out the arrow. The elephant master thought, "If I die at this time, this herd of elephants will be without protection." Thinking, "If I have no anger towards this hunter and can please him, by this truth, may my poison be exhausted." As soon as he spoke, he was completely freed from the harm of the arrow. Seeing him revived in this way, the hunter prostrated and recounted the words of the king's consort. The elephant master, with a compassionate heart, removed his tusks and gave them away, and by the power of truth, his tusks grew back. The hunter took the tusks and went to the king's palace, and the king gave the hunter a reward of wealth, and upon seeing the tusks, he felt remorse. The consort also truthfully told her master how she had experienced jealousy in a previous life, lamenting, "Alas! I destroyed the elephant master of the forest, who possessed asceticism and a peaceful mind, with an evil jealous heart." The hunter comforted the consort, "Do not grieve! That great being lives by the blessing of truth, and his teeth have grown back, and he protects his retinue." The consort was delighted to hear this. Again, in the past, in a mountain forest on the bank of a river called Varanasi, the Blessed One himself transformed into a deer king, with a white belly and a black back, a beautiful form, living in peace and protecting the herd of deer. He and a deer with similar features.

There were two leaders of the second herd, one named Other-Given. Once, King Brahma-Given, with a host of troops, came to that forest to hunt deer, and having drawn their weapons, they surrounded all the deer. At that time, before the king could seize his bow and arrow, that lord of the deer went forth and said, 'O lord of men, what is the use of killing all these deer at once? Day by day, I will send one deer to you.' The king said, 'If it is true as you say, then it is well; otherwise, all the deer shall be destroyed.' Having made this decree, the king departed. There, having gathered the deer, the lord of the assembly said, 'In order not to be killed all at once, it has been decreed that each day one deer shall go to the king's kitchen.' By the command of the two lords of the deer, for some days, one deer was sent each day. After that, the turn to go fell upon a pregnant doe, who said to the lord of the deer, Given-by-the-Gods, 'Surely, tomorrow morning I will give birth to a child. After it is born, I will go to die. Not with it.' But he said, 'If it is your turn, who else should go? It is not right to disobey my command.' And he drove her away. That doe went before the other lord of the deer, the compassionate one, and said, 'It is my turn to go, so when I give birth to the child tomorrow, let someone lick it with their tongue and allow it to drink milk, and entrust it to my sister. Then I will go to die, so please grant permission for the sake of protecting this child.' And when that lord of the assembly heard that, he felt great compassion for the child and said, 'Good woman, look after the child and dwell in peace for a long time. I will go in your place.' Having given her relief, he made aspirations for unsurpassed enlightenment, and was escorted by his own herd with grief. He said to them, 'Return,' and taught them the Dharma of renunciation, and went alone. The deer watched him until they could no longer see him, and grieved as if they had lost their father. That Bodhisattva went to the place of those butchers filled with blood and bones.
