The Blessed One himself was born as a prince named Kshanti (Patience), who was brave in giving and possessed great compassion. At that time, there were six ministers who were angry, deceitful, and arbitrarily executed people without cause. They were always jealous of the prince because of their own faults. At that time, the king was afflicted with a severe illness. The prince asked the ministers about the condition of his father, the king. They replied, 'The king will soon pass away because a good medicine cannot be found.' The prince was very unhappy upon hearing this and fell to the ground. The six ministers secretly consulted, saying, 'If we do not eliminate Prince Kshanti, we will never be at peace.' One of them said, 'If he has no fault, how can we eliminate him?' Another said, 'There is a way.' Saying this, they went to the prince and said, 'We have searched throughout the lands of the sixty small kingdoms and the eight hundred cities for a medicine that can heal the king, but we have not found it.' The prince asked, 'What medicine does the king need that you have not found?' The ministers replied, 'The medicine requires the eyeball and foot of someone who, from birth, does not know anger. Hearing this, the king cried out and threw himself on the ground, saying, "I am a shameless person, why did I eat my son's flesh as medicine?" He ran to where his son was, but before the king arrived, the prince had passed away. The king, ministers, queen, and attendants surrounded him, and the mother also threw herself on the prince's corpse, crying and wailing. There, the king and the small kings burned the body with sandalwood and made a stupa of seven precious jewels from the bones. The king and queen at that time were the present-day Śuddhodana and Māyā." Again, in the past, the Blessed One himself was a lion named "Firm Vow," whose body shone like gold. It ate fruits and roots, did not harm any sentient beings, respected renunciates, and lived there. There, a hunter thought, "If I kill this lion and offer its skin to the king, I can get rid of my poverty." There, a minister named Evil Wisdom, with a cruel mind, thought, 'If I kill Joyful Jewel, I will be able to control this population.' So, he sent a letter to King Mount Meru, saying, 'This Joyful Jewel is the son of your enemy. Therefore, if you kill him, you will become the master of all Jambudvipa, and I will become a servant of the gods.' Hearing this, King Mount Meru sent a messenger to him, saying, 'Your father caused me suffering by stealing my wealth, and now I will inflict the same harm on you with great force.' Joyful Jewel thought, 'If King Mount Meru comes here, my people will suffer.' So he said to the messenger, 'Please tell them that I am going to visit my gurus, and I will come there myself.' Having said this, he set out with the king's great wealth and an army, and after reaching the banks of the Ganges near the king's territory, he sent word to the evil-minded minister, saying, 'Please tell him that my grandfather's guru is also your guru, how could I not respect you?' But he said, 'Joyful Jewel says, King Mount Meru, come here respectfully,' and this fearless person spoke to the gods. Thus, he sowed discord, and King Mount Meru became very angry. Then, Evil Wisdom said to him, 'Joyful Jewel is very weak and foolish, so he will not cause you, the god, any harm.'
