was protected. Friends' tongues are very heavy, and those who preach the Dharma will speak of it. When the evil mind's body is destroyed, it will be born in the hells. Thus he spoke. That bear was the Blessed One, the Buddha, and that man was Devadatta. Even when a Bodhisattva is born as an animal and obtains the fear of death, he still displays such miraculous transformations of teaching the Dharma to sentient beings, becoming a lamp to distinguish the right path from the wrong path. What need is there to mention teaching the Dharma after becoming a Buddha? Therefore, having recognized the qualities, one should be respectful. Furthermore, in a past life, during the reign of King Brahma-dana, a man went to the forest to fetch a wooden stake, and was chased by a lion and fell into a pit. The lion also chased him and fell into that pit. Also, a snake, frightened, fled, and a mouse was chased by an eagle in order to eat it, and all of them, due to the force of karma, fell into that pit together. When they all wanted to kill each other with harmful intent, the lion said: I can deal with all of you. We have heard unbearable suffering, this is not the time to harm each other, please stay. There, by chance, a hunter went to those places and looked into that pit. They said with flustered words: Please protect us. The hunter first took out the lion, and the lion touched the hunter's feet and said: I will repay your kindness. However, this black-headed man living here is an ungrateful person, do not save him. Having said that, he left. After a while, the hunter gradually took them all out. At another time, the lion killed a wild animal and, recognizing the hunter, gave him the carcass of the wild animal. King Brahma-dana went to the garden with his queen, and when the king fell asleep, the queens took off their ornaments and stayed leisurely. The eagle took the ornaments and, in order to repay the kindness, gave them to the hunter. The queens lost their ornaments and reported to the king. The king ordered the ministers to investigate who had taken the ornaments, and after questioning and investigating, they learned that the former man often frequented the hunter's place, knew that he was there, and told the king. The king

Then (someone) called the hunter and said that he had stolen the jewels. The hunter explained what had happened and offered the jewels to the king, but that person was still bound and imprisoned. Seeing this, the mouse said to the snake, 'That black-headed evildoer has bound and imprisoned our benefactor who has been kind to us.' That snake said to the hunter, 'Today I will seize the king, and you should heal him with this mantra and these medicines.' Having said that, it seized the king. The hunter healed him with mantras and medicines, and the king was very pleased and released him from prison, and also shared possessions with him. Thus, even those born as animals have a sense of gratitude, how much more so should humans. Most people do not know how to repay kindness, which is very shameful, and this should be understood. In the past, when the Blessed One was incarnated as a hunter, that ungrateful person was Devadatta, and now, when he has become a Buddha, he still does not repay kindness and does harm, but the Blessed One's mind abides in compassion just like to Rahula.' Furthermore, the story of the blessing of the Ganges mouse and the story of the snake and the mongoose also come from the Vinaya.

The Blessed One himself, when he was born as a monkey king Bodhisattva, went to that place and saw that person. In order to rescue him, he first practiced strength on the stones. When he was able to lift something as heavy as that person, he thought, 'I can rescue this person.' So he rescued the person from the cliff, even though he was very tired. He asked the person in human language, and the person told him what had happened. The monkey king thought, 'This person has suffered for the sake of amra fruits, so I should give him those fruits.' Despite his tired body, he plucked amra fruits from the tree, let the person eat as much as he wanted, and filled his bag. The Bodhisattva, abiding in compassion for all sentient beings, went to the person and said, 'I am very tired, let me sleep for a while, please watch over me for a moment.' Then he fell asleep. The person thought, 'I have no food, and if I eat the amra fruits, what will I offer to the king? I might as well kill this monkey, dry the meat, and take it as food for the journey.' This merciless person, who did not consider the next life, killed him with a large stone. The gods said, 'The characteristic of benefiting others, and likewise, gratitude is spoken of as a friend. Some people do not know the kindness done to them.' Thus, Devadatta, in his previous life as a florist, was ungrateful to the monkey king. Even at the time of becoming a Buddha, he was still ungrateful and insensitive, but the Blessed One, even in his previous life, cherished him like an only son, so what need is there to mention it now that he has become a Buddha? Again, in the past, in a large forest with cliffs, when he became a monkey, a person got lost and went to that place. In order to eat the fruits of the tindu tree, he climbed a tree and fell into a very difficult to escape deep ravine. When he was overwhelmed by the sorrow of not being able to escape, the monkey carried wood and practiced strength on the stones, rescued the person from the cliff, and fell asleep on a stone slab due to fatigue. That foolish person promised to be a servant, and when he stayed there, he thought, 'For the food on the road to my liberation from solitude, this monkey is very strong, and if he wakes up, he will not let me live.'

Before he woke up, intending to kill him, he threw a large stone at the monkey's head. The edge of the stone only hit the head a little, not completely, and the monkey, with a wound on his head, jumped up and looked, but saw nothing but the man standing there in fear. Thinking that he must have done it, without considering the pain of being harmed, thinking that this person does not look at the benefits, but does disgusting things, he was filled with great compassion, with tears in his eyes, and said: 'You, as a human being, do such things, alas! If I had other harmers, you should have stopped them. But what is accomplished by destroying this life and the next like this? Now that you are wasting time like this, not leaving this forest to go near the village, I will take you there.' So he took him near the village, showed him the way, and advised him to abandon sinful deeds, and then left. That man, because of the maturation of bad karma, became ugly and unsightly, his appearance like a flesh-eating ghost, hated wherever he went, and lived in a forest. A hunting king saw him and asked him, and he told of the experiences that resulted from being ungrateful to a loving person. Also, in a previous life, the Bodhisattva was born as a Garuda bird. At that time, the king of beasts, a lion in that area, had a bone stuck in his throat from eating meat, and was suffering greatly. The Garuda bird asked about the situation, saw the bone in the lion's throat, and after the lion fell asleep, flew into the lion's mouth, pulled out the bone, and said: 'You are the king of beasts, capable of helping others, I hope you will help me in the future.' The lion also promised to do so. Later, the Garuda bird was caught by a hawk and almost lost its life. After barely escaping, it was starving and came to the lion who was eating meat and said: 'I am hungry, please give me some meat to eat.' The lion said: 'Is it not a great favor that you can come alive between my fierce teeth?' The Garuda bird said: 'A person rescued from the sea, the thoughts in dreams are meaningless. What is relied upon when one is poor? There is no point in doing good if one does not repay kindness.' After saying this, it flew away, without anger or conflict, and left peacefully. This lion is truly ungrateful! Also, in the past, there were four princes who each married their own consorts and lived, they used the count
