Then they said, "If Prince Moon, who is powerful, comes here, we might be saved." They discussed, "We should pray to the Rakshasa to bring Prince Moon." They said to the Rakshasa king, "If you hold a feast, the feast will not become good by having only the feast of our human king. If we find the prince named Moon Official, who has great qualities, then the feast will become great." The Rakshasa said, "What is difficult about this?" Having said this, he flew into the sky and went to Somalen. At that time, Prince Moon was acting as regent, possessing great royal wealth, and he went to the garden. A well-spoken Brahmin came to Prince Moon, hoping to offer the gift of good speech and obtain wealth. He came there, looking at the prince's beautiful form and being filled with affection. Since there was no opportunity to discuss Dharma with that Brahmin, the crowd of people gathered together, making a great noise. The prince ordered, "See what is happening." Those people, frightened, hurriedly said, "The son of Rasudaya, named Barefoot, the man-eating Rakshasa, has arrived." People were afraid of him, and the armies also scattered. What should be done? Then, the Bodhisattva knew the situation of Barefoot Rakshasa and thought, "Help him, heal him." He said, "If he comes here, I will entertain him." Then, he sent all the consorts away. Prince Moon himself went to the place where the great noise was being made, and seeing the terrible and ugly Barefoot Rakshasa waving a shield and sword, pursuing after the army, the Bodhisattva called him and said, "Hey, Moon is me. What is the use of that evil, impoverished Dharma since you are indulging in eating human flesh? Go back, come back!" Then the Rakshasa returned. Seeing the Bodhisattva alone, his nature peaceful, he said, "I have also come to find you." Then, without hesitation, he grabbed his shoulder and ran away. The Bodhisattva thought, "Now is not the time to subdue him." and remained in equanimity. Then, he placed the prince in an ugly place, filled with many unkilled skeletons and stained with blood. Prince Moon stared with wide eyes, looking at his perfect and beautiful body.

Then, the Bodhisattva, thinking that the Brahmin who came bearing the gift of eloquent speech would be disappointed knowing that he had been taken away, and feeling that he had not fulfilled his expectations, shed tears of sorrow. Seeing him like this, the Rakshasa laughed and said: "Are you not known to be steadfast with many virtues? Yet, when I have you in my power, why do you shed tears like this? Is it because you remember your life or some other suffering?" Prince Chandra said: "It is not because I remember my life or other sufferings that I am unhappy. But now, in the pleasure garden, there is a Brahmin who has brought the gift of eloquent speech, hoping to obtain wealth from me. I am being taken away, and the Brahmin will be disappointed. Thinking of this, I shed tears. If you have compassion for me, release me and let me go back. I will listen to the eloquent speech from that Brahmin, and also give him offerings, and then return here again." The Rakshasa said: "If I release you, can you be trusted to return?" The King said: "I have never spoken falsely since birth, so it is impossible for me to abandon my vow. However, if you do not believe me, even if I do not come in the future, you have the power to seize me. Have I not come to you of my own accord before?" Having said this, the Rakshasa released him. When the prince returned, his people rejoiced as if he had escaped from the mouth of the Lord of Death. He summoned the Brahmin and received four verses from him. There, the value of one verse was estimated to be a thousand gold coins. So he gave four thousand gold coins, and also offered him whatever else he desired. Then, the prince's father, seeing that so much wealth was being lost for such a small matter, felt it was a great loss and said in gentle words: "Son, it is good to give as much as is appropriate from eloquent speech, but if it is too much, even the master of wealth will be exhausted. The affairs of your family and subjects depend on wealth, so be moderate and restrained, and rule the kingdom." The prince said: "Father, if eloquent speech can be valued, then the kingdom should also be given away. For there is no other quality as virtuous as hearing, which gives rise to wisdom and makes one free from delusion. When hearing occurs, why should one not make offerings? I do not need the kingdom, which is the source of great faults. I am"

When the prince said, "I will go again as previously promised," his father became very agitated and said, "Son, do not be displeased by my saying these words for your benefit. Which son would knowingly go before an enemy? Even if you have promised, I will not allow it. The wise say that there is no sin in lying to protect one's life and for the sake of the guru. Therefore, spare us and that evil moment of yours that disregards your own interests! Even if you think it goes against your own vow, I have already deployed four armies for your liberation, let them surround you and go, and do not become a captive of that enemy. In this way, you will not be ashamed of your promise, and you will also be protected." The prince said, "Gods, I cannot do anything contrary to my promise. Who would be unmoved by those who have gone astray, are heading to hell, and are without protection? Even that flesh-eating Rakshasa forgave me and let me go, and because of the kindness of him letting me go believing my words, I also heard these good sayings. Now is the time for me to repay him, I will not let myself die." Having said this, he dismissed the other armies and went alone to the Rakshasa. The Rakshasa also saw him coming from afar, and the impurity that had long been covered by a rough heart mostly turned into a heart of faith, thinking, "Alas, how wonderful! To protect the truth without fearing death like this!" Then the prince said, "I have found good speech and have also made offerings, so I am happy, and I remember your kindness. Now that I have come here, eat me as you wish!" The Rakshasa said, "The time for me to eat you does not seem to have come yet, for now, show me those good sayings and I want to listen." The Bodhisattva said, "You have become so cruel and without compassion, and have temporarily become like this just to fill your belly, these verses only show the Dharma, and Dharma and non-Dharma are incompatible. What is the use of showing the noble path to evil people, even more so than to a Rakshasa?" To the Rakshasa's mockery, he replied, "Kings with playful

Since killing pitiful young animals is done for survival, does killing people for survival violate Dharma, but killing animals does not? The Bodhisattva said: Those who kill animals are also not abiding in Dharma. Eating human flesh is even more shameful than that; people of high caste should not eat human flesh. Although she mocked with harsh words, the Bodhisattva suppressed his anger with the power of loving-kindness, and with a gentle smile, as if hearing those words, he said: After I released you, you went home to enjoy the king's wealth and all pleasures, and then returned to me. Are you not skilled in the principles of Dharma? The Bodhisattva said: I am not attached to temporary happiness, and I have abandoned the evil principles that only seek to protect oneself. Coming here to protect the truth is indeed being skilled in the principles of Dharma. This principle does not contradict fame and the meaning of truth. Evil principles are contradictory, and those who abide by them will die and go to lower realms. The Rakshasa said: Abandoning a life of poverty, a life filled with the tears of family, and the happiness of a kingdom, what meaning do you see in truthful words that you come here? The Bodhisattva said: Truth has many special qualities; to put it briefly, truth is superior to all ornaments, and truthful words are sweeter than all tastes. Even without engaging in asceticism and other afflictions, one accumulates merit and increases fame that pervades all beings. Truth is the path that transcends the three realms. It is also the door to enter the realm of the gods. It is also the bridge to escape from the swamp of samsara. Having said this, the Rakshasa praised him, saying: Well done. When other people are under my control, their resolve weakens, and they are filled with fear. I think you are a brave person, fearless, and without fear of death. The prince said: Even if one strives diligently, what good is fearing death, which cannot be remedied? Furthermore, those who have not done good and have committed evil will experience fear at the time of death because of that cause. I do not remember having committed any sins that cause regret, and abiding in Dharma, having performed generosity and other virtuous deeds, my mind is at ease, so I do not fear death. Therefore, you
