Such great suffering that cannot be calmed in any way, please tell us a method that cannot be overwhelmed by it. To that, the Bodhisattva said: The root of these four sufferings is ignorance. If ignorance ceases, then from actions and so on, all aggregates of suffering will cease. They said: How will this birth, which has the root of suffering, be cut off? He said: If you want peace, you should abandon killing, stealing, non-chaste conduct, lying, etc., and subdue the senses, then you will be able to uproot the tree of birth. To that, everyone exclaimed "Well done" and in their respective places, according to the teachings of the ascetic sage, they lived with vows of non-harming to living beings, etc. After those people passed away, they obtained rebirth as humans and attained the state of peace. ༈ The true words of those who possess morality and abide in the Dharma are accomplished. In the past, this Blessed One was skilled in the movement of stars and the examination of directions, as well as sudden omens and signs, the distinctions of time and non-time, the examination of the ocean including the color of fish and water, the distinctions of land, and the signs of birds and wild animals, and was also skilled in the examination of the ocean's directions. He was less lazy and less sleepy, possessed mindfulness and awareness, could endure the suffering of heat and cold, was cautious and stable, and was skilled in the methods of righting and capsizing ships, enabling the merchants of the ocean to reach their desired destinations. When he took birth as someone named "Well Able to Cross to the Other Shore," because of his auspiciousness and the perfection of accomplishment, the diviners greatly revered him and prayed before allowing him to enter the ocean. Once, a merchant from the land of Bhatukaccha, who wanted to go to the Golden Island and accomplish his wishes, requested him to be the captain. He said: I am old and cannot travel. They said: You have nothing else to do, but if you board the ship, we will pray for auspiciousness and accomplishment. Out of compassion for them, he boarded the great ship and entered the ocean, and those merchants thought that in this way they would surely accomplish their wishes without harm. After a while, in the afternoon, a great wind arose, gathering clouds, obscuring the sunlight. The ocean was also turbulent with waves, producing a great sound. Lightning flashed from the black clouds, and the sound of thunder roared. Gradually, as the sun approached the west, heavy rain and ocean waves mingled, creating great terror, and the merchants were frightened and prayed to the gods. There, driven by the force of wind and water, for many days they did not see the shore, and without seeing the desired signs of the ocean, they saw only what they had never seen before, their hearts filled with fear and helplessness. Then, the captain said, 'Your dejection and sorrow are of no use. Relying on skillful means, even if it is very difficult, it can be overcome in times of small difficulty, so be firm in your minds and extend the reach of your knowledge.' So, with the hope of seeing the shore, he looked out. He saw a figure like a human, wearing silver armor, sinking into the water and then floating up. They asked the captain what it was, and the captain said, 'These are non-human fish-men, do not be afraid of them. However, we have strayed far from both lands, and have reached the Sea of Razor's Edge, so call for it to return.' They tried to call out, but the water flowed continuously and the wind rose and fell, and the ship went quickly and could not be turned back. Finally, the ship was carried there, and they saw the white water like silver, an ocean with a garland of heads. They asked the captain, and the captain said, 'This is the Ocean of Yogurt of the Milky Sea, we have been carried too far by the water, it is very difficult, we must not go any further.' The merchants said, 'The ship is very fast and the wind is strong, even if we try to go slowly we cannot, how is it possible to return?' He only mentioned the name, without explaining the reason why the water color had become like that. Passing beyond that, they saw another sea, the color like flawless gems and sapphires, also like ripe kusha roots, and after asking, the captain said, "This is the Chain of Kusha Sea, like a wild elephant without an iron hook, the unbearable flowing water will make us lose our joy, strive to avoid it." Those merchants tried, but could not turn the boat around. Passing beyond that sea, they saw a sea with water the color of lapis lazuli, a blue sea, and after asking, the captain, knowing that the merchants were suffering, sighed unhappily and said slowly, "This is called the Chain of Reed Sea, now that we have passed beyond this, it is difficult to turn back, and if we do not turn back, the world will end." After saying these words, those merchants were discouraged, their body joints creaked, they sighed deeply and stopped. Passing beyond that sea, the sunlight also became weaker and closer to setting, and the sea was like being turned upside down, all the water flowing as if into a huge abyss, and the sound of the sea water was like a fierce hailstorm falling, and like a bamboo forest burning with crackling sounds, the sound was huge and terrifying. There, the merchants panicked, looked around, became confused, gathered to the captain and said, "Our ears are about to split, and our hearts are trembling with fear, the roaring sound like an angry little master is echoing. All the water is flowing as if into a terrible abyss, what kind of sea is this? What do you intend to do?" Then, that great being also said in a flustered manner, "Oh my, how strange!" He said, "The abyss of the sea, like the mouth of the god of death from which one cannot return once entered, is this." Hearing these words, the merchants felt that they had fallen into the abyss of the sea, had no hope of living, and were afraid of death.

Therefore, their minds became very distraught. Some fainted, some wailed, some curled up and could do nothing. Some lost their minds and prayed to the lord of the gods with pitiful hearts. Likewise, some sought refuge in the sun, stars, moon, wealth gods, and sea gods. Some recited mantras, while others prayed to goddesses. Some came before the Sugata and wailed: 'You are the one with great power to liberate from poverty. Please have steadfast concern for us helpless ones who are caught in the midst of the ocean, grant us refuge, and show your great power!' They thought, 'Even this ocean will not disobey your command.' Therefore, they prayed, 'Please avert this calamity!' At that time, that great being, with a compassionate heart, spoke to those merchants in order to revive their spirits: 'I see some ways to remedy this situation. Let us reconcile with compassion for a while, and you all cheer up!' Hearing this, they thought, 'Perhaps there is a remedy.' So, they waited with hope and trust. The Bodhisattva Sugata draped his upper garment over one shoulder, knelt on the boat with his right knee, prostrated with his whole body, paid homage to the Tathagatas, and then said: 'Merchants and special deities residing in the ocean and sky, please listen! From the time I could know, Never have I intentionally, Towards all sentient beings, Remembered thinking to kill them. By the power of this truthful speech, And the power of my merit, Without sinking into this ocean, May this ship safely return in a year.' As soon as he said this, the wind, along with the force of the water, reversed, and the ship also reversed. Seeing this, those merchants were very surprised and happy, and they prostrated to the Bodhisattva and exclaimed: 'The ship has returned!' Then, that great being commanded: 'Quickly raise the sails!' Those who were assigned to the task happily did as they were told. After that, the water and wind harmoniously descended and rose, and the people made joyful sounds.
