Please grant it. Indra said: I do not desire the five excellent lands, etc. Let the king know that I am the lord of the gods. To honor those who speak beneficially is to practice according to the words of instruction. For the sake of gaining the foundation of glory and fame in this life, and for obtaining happiness in future lives, abandon attachment to alcohol and act according to the Dharma! Having said this, he immediately disappeared. From then on, the king, ministers, and subjects all ceased to drink alcohol. Furthermore, in a previous time, when the Bhagavan was a Bodhisattva, he cultivated meditative absorption and was born in the Brahma realm. Although he attained great bliss from meditative absorption, due to the power of his compassion, he wished to benefit others. He looked upon the desire realm, which was filled with suffering and discomfort. In the land of India, there was a king named Limb-Giver, who was influenced by an unwholesome spiritual friend. He held the view that there was no other world and no ripening of karma, and he turned his back on the practice of Dharma. The great being, the divine sage, felt compassion for that sentient being who was inclined towards the lower realms. He descended from the Brahma realm to the front of the king, who was residing in an immeasurable palace. Seeing him blazing with light like the sun, the king looked at him, stood up, and respectfully said: Who are you, with a form as beautiful and radiant as the sun? He said: I am a divine sage from the Brahma realm. The king said: Excellent. He offered offerings and washed his feet, showing respect, and said: Noble one, your miraculous powers are so great, please tell me how you obtained them? The Bodhisattva said: Meditative absorption, discipline without defilement, the senses are well restrained, and having become accustomed to other existences as well, it seems that this is the result. The king said: Is it true what they say, that there is another world? Brahma said: Great king, it is true, there is indeed another world. The king said: Noble one, how should I believe this? The Bodhisattva Brahma said: King, this is very clear. It can be believed through valid cognition such as direct perception, through teachings with convincing words, and through the process of investigation as well.

Thinking that it might be possible to believe. The night sky adorned with the sun, moon, and stars, and the many forms of observing animals, all appear as if directly revealing another world. Do not harbor doubts or evil thoughts about this. Furthermore, those who meditate can remember their past lives, thus inferring the existence of another world. Even when examining one's own mind, the existence of another world is evident because later thoughts fulfill earlier ones. The very first thought in the womb is immediately the thought of the previous life. Mind is said to be what understands knowable objects, therefore, objects arise from the mind that has birth and cessation. Mere eyes and other organs are not mind, so it is not merely a product of this life; such a mind also exists in another world. The differences in people's ethics, faith, and so on, which appear inconsistent with the behavior of their parents, are due to the strength of habits from previous lives, not something that happens suddenly. Those with unclear minds and dull senses, who suckle milk and strive for food immediately after birth without being taught by anyone, also show that they have become accustomed to another existence. Because one becomes skilled by being accustomed to doing something and what kind of work, just as the power of previous habits is clearly realized later. Those who do not believe in another world, just as they do not want the opening and closing of lotuses to be the result of habits from previous lives, then why should they think that suckling milk is not the result of habits from previous lives? Because there is a difference between definite and indefinite times, and a difference between reasonable and unreasonable effort, it cannot be compared to lotuses. The opening and closing of lotuses depends on the factor of the sun rising, and the time is definite; while striving to suckle milk depends on the intention of the mind, so there is no certainty about external time. Lotuses have no effortful action because they have no mind; while suckling milk is the effort of the mind. These two cannot be proven to be the same in any way. Therefore, if the king thinks carefully, another world can exist. After that, the king, being too attached to wrong views and heavily sinful, felt uncomfortable hearing the talk of another world, and then

said, "Oh, great ascetic, if what is called the next world is not like scaring children, but you think I should believe in it, then give me five hundred gold coins today, and I will give you a thousand gold coins in return in the next life." The Bodhisattva said, "To lend money with the desire for wealth is for those who are base, greedy, unwise, and lazy. Do not lend money to them, for if you do, it will be exhausted. If you lend to those who know shame, are of noble birth, and are skilled in increasing wealth, even if they are very poor, they will repay the debt, and wealth will increase. With the words of repaying debts in another world, even if you lend money to someone like you who holds wrong views, it is useless, because those who hold wrong views will fall into hell and suffer due to their own karma. Who will seek that thousand gold coins then?" And he spoke in detail about the sufferings of being born in hell. After the king heard the terrifying story of the beings in hell, he abandoned his attachment to wrong views and believed that there was a next world. He then prostrated to the great ascetic and said, "I have gone down the path of wrong views, and after hearing the suffering of hell, I am afraid, thinking, 'When will I experience such suffering?' Please tell me the path that does not lead to the lower realms." The Bodhisattva said, "You should abide in right view and encourage others to do the same. With compassion, abandon non-virtuous actions such as stinginess and moral misconduct, and abide in generosity and discipline, restraining the senses. By the power of accumulating merit, you will not fall into the lower realms, but will experience many heavenly pleasures." After saying this, he immediately disappeared. The king and his retinue entered into right view and became extremely devoted to virtuous deeds such as generosity and discipline. Again, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was born as the son given by Brahma, named Kashi Beautiful. By the power of the wisdom he had cultivated in previous lives, even in his youth, his mind was not swayed by objects of desire such as women, and he regarded kingship as a fault. Therefore, he abandoned the duties of a crown prince and lived in the forest, practicing meditation.

Thus it was. At one time, having arisen from meditation and walking in the garden of the forest, he saw a Kinnara woman possessing the supreme qualities of form. That Kinnara woman also saw him, and captivated by his beautiful form, she approached him and said: A Kinnara friend of mine, whose greatness of form and youthful beauty puts even the gods to shame, has seen you and is constantly tormented by the suffering of desire, so she has sent me to you, and you should please her. The Bodhisattva said: Is that Kinnara woman older or younger than you? The Bodhisattva said: Thus, age changes in an instant, and you too are aging and changing, let alone the Kinnara woman. Listen to me. The body is an impure wheel, and attachment to it causes many kinds of suffering, etc. By showing these ways, her fire of desire was extinguished, and she began to meditate. The Bodhisattva entered his own hut. In this way, even the extremely beautiful Kinnara woman could not break his asceticism. Later, when the Bhagavan became enlightened, a dancer named Utpal performed dances and songs in front of the Bhagavan, and the Teacher, by teaching the Dharma, dispelled her pride of youth and enabled her to attain the fruit of an Arhat. Again, in a previous life, the Bhagavan himself was born into the Brahmin caste, having gone beyond all the scriptures, and was revered by all who were diligent in the work of fire offerings, etc. He saw the faults of the household and went to the forest of asceticism. By the power of loving-kindness, a snake, a pigeon, a crow, and a deer, four friends, gathered before him and sat like disciples. There, the deer said: Great sage, I have not seen a suffering greater than fear. The crow said: I have not seen a suffering greater than hunger, please tell me a way to escape from this. The black snake said: The fire of anger burns both oneself and others, what is the way to pacify it? The pigeon said: For the torment of the fire of desire, the moon and cool water, etc.
