finished. The minister said: Please do not have doubts that violate the Dharma. By helping me with the almsgiving, it will become merit for you. If you do not accept, obstructing my almsgiving, it will become non-merit. There is no bad talk either. Who knows this besides the two of us? Therefore, being blamed by people is meaningless. The king said: Even if you love me very much, such almsgiving is not appropriate. Even if one commits evil where no one sees it, one will be uncomfortable as if having eaten poison. It is impossible for gods and yogis not to see. Furthermore, if this is given away, you will suffer. The minister said: You are the king, and I am the subject. You have the right to dispose of this female slave, so what conflict is there with the Dharma? This has impoverished me to the extreme. If poverty is given away, one will be very happy in the next life, and hearing of poverty, please accept this goddess. The king said: Do not say such things. Even if glory is obtained through pure practice of the Dharma, harming the almsgiver is easier than stabbing with a sword or entering into fire. The minister said: If this goddess is not accepted, then let her be treated as a prostitute that everyone can enjoy. Therefore, please accept her. The king said: Are you drunk or what? How can I punish an innocent wife with my punishment? If that is the case, you will become an object of condemnation and will be burned by the flames of this life and the next. Therefore, do not make excessive demands for what should not be done, but be pleased with what is reasonable. That minister said: If you, the king, are happy, my heart will be happy. Even if it violates the Dharma or is condemned by people, I can endure it. Because there is no protector better than you, please accept her to increase my merit. The king said: Because you love me and do not consider my interests, I cannot easily abandon you even more. Not fearing the condemnation of the world, and not considering the fruits of this life and the next, is to be abandoned by gods and glory, so even for the sake of life, I do not like what is not in accordance with the Dharma, because it will produce great faults, small benefits, and is full of doubts. Furthermore, if the holy ones do painful things such as slandering others, they will not achieve their own happiness, therefore now, without harming anyone, abiding in the Dharma, they will accomplish their own benefit. The minister

said: "What non-dharmic fault is there in offering this which has been used by respectful subjects for the sake of the lord? How can the people of this land apply the term 'non-dharmic' to it? Therefore, please accept it." The king said: "Although you are focused on the meaning, it is necessary to examine who among us two and the people of the land of Śivika is the best at knowing the Dharma." The minister said: "There is no one greater than you, who reveres the elderly, is very learned, has sharp intelligence, and understands the essence of things." The king said: "If that is so, I should not be deceived by this. Why is that? Because benefit and harm in the world depend on the actions of kings. Therefore, thinking with affection for the subjects, one should look to the path of good reputation, and just as those who follow where the leader of the flock has gone follow without doubt, so too the subjects will follow the king. Furthermore, listen to me. If he cannot protect himself, how will he protect the subjects? I will not be swayed by the mind of desire, with a mind that looks after the subjects and regards the Dharma and fame as untainted." Then, that minister, realizing the king's steadfastness, bowed and said: "The subjects who have a king like you are fortunate! A person like you, who abides in the Dharma and is not attached to happiness, is rare even in the forest of asceticism! The title 'Great King' is also fitting for you, who are endowed with qualities," he praised. Thus, great beings, even when afflicted by suffering, abide in the discipline of not entering the path of evil. Furthermore, in the past, when the Bodhisattva became Indra, the lord of the gods, even though he had perfect heavenly bliss, he did not slacken in his actions for the sake of the world because of compassion. Wandering in the human world, he saw with his divine eye a king named Mitra, who, due to the fault of relying on an unwholesome friend, along with his ministers and subjects, enjoyed drinking alcohol and did not see it as a fault. That great being saw that drinking alcohol was a great fault and wondered what to do about it. First, if the king himself could be corrected, then his retinue would follow. The Bodhisattva

The powerful Indra, pleasing like the color of pure gold, with a slightly rough hairstyle swirling to the right, adorned with tree bark and antelope skin, transformed into a radiant form like Brahma, holding a not-too-large bottle filled with alcohol in his left hand, appeared from the sky in front of King Eza and his entourage, who were discussing grain alcohol, honey alcohol, sugar alcohol, mixed alcohol, and grape alcohol. Those people, amazed and respectful, stood up, folded their palms, and sat down. He secretly praised like a dragon's roar, saying: Who wants to buy this bottle with a garland of flowers? The king, astonished, respectfully folded his palms and asked: Who are you, with a body as beautiful as the sun and moon in this world? Please speak, so that everyone in the world may recognize you. We believe you possess extraordinary qualities. Indra said: Who I am, you will know later. If you are not afraid of being destroyed in the next life and in this life, then buy this bottle from me. The king said: Alas! Your way of selling goods is unprecedented! In this world, those who sell goods speak of virtues and hide faults. You are one who does not lie, upholds virtues, and does not abandon even if true merits are lacking. What is this bottle filled with? What great benefit is there that you want to sell it to me? Please tell me, you great being. Indra said: Great king, listen! It is not filled with water, yogurt, whey, pearl water, saffron-scented juice water, ghee, or milk. Listen to the merits of this bottle filled with the nature of sin! Whoever drinks it will become drunk and staggering, losing control of their steps and wandering. Even in unfamiliar places, they will roam and wander, fighting and quarreling, losing their memory. Without distinguishing between what is edible and inedible, they will consume everything. Buy this vile bottle filled with these things! In this way, through verses, because one cannot control one's own mind, one becomes like livestock. Even ridiculed by enemies. Dancing in front of him.

Beating the chest and stamping the feet. Those who drink lose their shame, wander naked in the city, vomit and do not care if dogs lick their faces, lie on the main road without memory. Being drunk, they even despise their parents and the owners of wealth. If you sell faults such as fighting each other, put the trafficker in this bottle! If you are attached to it, even a family that is the source of wealth will be ruined, becoming higher and higher. Even a family with wealth and power will be destroyed. What is to be sold is in this bottle! Suddenly crying and speaking without certainty of laughter. Eyes filled with tears as if possessed by a demon. It will surely become a place of slander and contempt. That mental deterioration is in this bottle! And so on. The mantra of intoxication is the cause of suffering. Like a manifestation of evil and a bad omen. Since it is no different from the path of strife, buy this unbearable darkness of the heart! And so on. Even though wine, the lord of men, is like this, in the world it is highly praised as a god. Those who do not truly like virtue, strive to buy this wine. If you rely on it, you will act wickedly. With great fear, sentient beings fall into hell. Who wants to see the realm of animals and the impoverished pretas? And so on. Morality will decline and bad talk will manifest. Shameless and wisdom becomes tainted. If you drink it, those qualities will be lost. Therefore, how can you, O King, drink alcohol? Hearing these words fall into the king's heart, he understood the faults of drinking and became free from attachment and clinging to drinking, and said to Indra: You are like loving parents, like a lama who pleases me with taming, like a wise one who is skilled in what is right and wrong. I will take to heart the good advice you have given me for my benefit and will please you accordingly. In return for your good words, I would like to offer you five good countries, please accept them from me! Also, a hundred servants, five hundred vehicles, and ten chariots with excellent horses are offered. My guru, you are the one who shows benefit. Furthermore, whatever I should do, please send it here, and in the future, please look upon me with your eyes.
