The boat they were on sailed comfortably like an immeasurable palace, and when night fell, the sun's rays were covered by darkness, and the stars appeared to shine, the captain said, "From the reed beds onwards, take all the sand and stones you can see from the sea, and load them into the boat as much as it can bear. If you do so, this boat will not capsize due to the weight. These sands and stones are all auspiciously revered, so you will surely achieve success without any difficulty." Having said this, they were delighted at having successfully reached the other shore, and with reverence, thinking that it was the continent of the gods' teachings, and that the sands and stones were the same, they took vaidurya and other jewels and filled the great boat. That very night, the boat went to the land of Bha-tu. The next morning, the boat was filled with silver, ammoniac, vaidurya, and gold. When they had reached the shore, they offered and praised the great captain with great joy. Furthermore, if those who possess discipline achieve virtuous thoughts even in this life, what need is there to mention other lifetimes? For example, the Bhagavan himself was once in a lake that was not very large, adorned with gala-hara flowers, white and red lotuses, and utpala flowers, beautified by swans and other creatures, and with many trees and flowers on the shore. In one of these, he became a king of fish, and because he had spent many lifetimes serving others, even when he lived there, he only sought to benefit and bring happiness to others. He cherished the other fish like children, helping them, preventing them from harming each other, and cultivating love between them. He skillfully used methods and reasoning to extensively proclaim the laws of fish and protect them, so that the fish flourished greatly, just as a king who rules according to dharma protects his subjects. Then, after some time, because those sentient beings had little merit, and because the sons of the gods who send down rain were negligent and did not send rain, the lake did not fill up as before. Gradually, the spring sun's rays became hot and sharp, and along with the scorching wind, the lake dried up, decreasing day by day, becoming like a puddle.

Those fish, even the hawks were looking for opportunities, let alone other birds. Thus, the fish were shrinking, unhappy, and barely able to move their necks. The fish king, seeing them, felt compassion and thought, 'Alas, these fish are going to suffer.' So he said: 'The water is decreasing day by day, like racing against the exhaustion of life. The gathering of rain clouds also seems even more difficult now. There is no way to escape, nor is there anyone to take us elsewhere. Those who rejoice in our destruction, our enemies, have also appeared today. If this remaining water dries up, I will see with my own eyes that the enemies will devour us. What should be done about this?' As he thought this, he saw that only the blessing of truth could help those in need. Then, the Bodhisattva fish king, with a sigh of compassion, looked up to the sky and said: 'We are extremely impoverished and do not remember intentionally killing living beings. By this truth, may the kings of the gods send down rain and fill this lake!' As soon as he said this, by the power of his merit, the blessing of truth, and the strength of the gods, nagas, yakshas, and others who rejoiced in him, a great cloud filled with water appeared out of season, making a pleasant and deep sound, adorned with chains of lightning, gathering together, and the rain poured down like a scattering of pearls, filling the entire earth. The lake was filled with water, the fish were able to live, and the birds that wanted to eat them scattered. The Bodhisattva was overjoyed, but fearing that the rain would stop, he said, 'Great rain cloud, with thunder and lightning, let the rain continue to fall for a long time!' Just as he said this. Indra was very pleased and said, 'This great rain is due to the power of the truth of you, the fish king! All those who have scorned the actions of a being like you, who benefits the world, have erred. From now on, I will be your friend, and this place will no longer be impoverished by your qualities.' After praising him, he disappeared. Again, in the past, the Bodhisattva was born as a fire-producing stick in a great forest.

That forest deity generated loving-kindness and, wetting its wings with water, sat upon that great fire, shaking its wings, and said: 'Here, whatever birds are unable to fly, fire, you must not move!' By the truth of meditating on loving-kindness, it spoke, causing the fire to stop. Indra helped it by sending down a great rain, and the fire was completely extinguished. Again, in the past, the Blessed One himself was born into a noble and virtuous family, respectful and wise, wealthy and like a precious householder, revered by the king as a great merchant. After that great bodhisattva went to the royal palace, the mother-in-law of that son-in-law, that is, the mother of the wife, came to the merchant's house to meet her daughter, and was honored and conversed with. The mother asked: 'Daughter, does your husband love you? When you respect him, does he repay your kindness? Is there nothing uncomfortable?' The daughter, out of shyness, humbly said: 'Such discipline, qualities, and conduct, even renunciates do not have.' The mother was old and hard of hearing, and the daughter's voice was small, so she did not hear well, but only heard the sound of 'renunciation,' and thought: 'My daughter's husband must have become a renunciate.' Therefore, she cried out in sorrow for her daughter: 'Thus, I have lost my beloved daughter, and what is his renunciation, the qualities of discipline, and conduct like? Young and having become an important person to the king, without conflict with family and without illness, such a person without compassion, like this, abandoning wealth and the assembly of family members, how did the thought of renouncing in a monastery arise?' As she lamented, the daughter also became unstable due to her female nature, thinking: 'My husband has renounced, making my mother so unhappy.' Because her mind was confused, she forgot the content of the conversation, and hearing the sound of her husband's renunciation, she thought: 'My mother has come to dispel sorrow.' Then she cried and fainted. There, all the people in the house heard it and began to cry, neighbors and friends

The attendants, the householder, and the people of the palace retinue mostly clung to that householder and gathered at his house. When all of them were equally suffering, the Bodhisattva went near that house, heard the sound of lamentation, and seeing many people gathered, sent a servant to investigate what misfortune had befallen the son. The servant then reported what had happened. Then, the Bodhisattva, whose mind was pure by nature, as if spurred on by those words, became ashamed and displeased, thinking, "Alas! It is good that people have such expectations of me. Having heard people praising and extolling my virtues, if I were to cling to home, I would not even be fit to be a human being. I have even abandoned virtue and believed in faults. What is the point of living if I abandon virtue? Therefore, people expect this of me: I should abandon the life of a householder and practice virtue in a place of asceticism." Thinking this, he returned and spoke to the king's attendant, and then went to the king. The king asked him why he had come, and he said, "O King, I wish to renounce the world; it is fitting that you grant me permission." The king said with loving words, "Why do you go to the end of the world when you have relatives and the best of friends like me? If you want wealth, take it from me. If there is harm, I will avert it. Why do you not want what I and my relatives are asking for, and why do you go?" He said, "By relying on you, where would there be any harm? I am not lacking in wealth either. Although I am not going to the end of the world because of poverty, it is because I heard the assembly of people weeping, afflicted by sorrow, and proclaiming that I should renounce the world. Therefore, I am going to a solitary place because I have become aware that I am virtuous." The king said, "It is not right for you to abandon us merely because of the words of people. For someone as richly endowed with virtues as you, it is not enough to merely heed the words of people, and there is nothing wrong with not doing so. The words of worldly chatter, which are scattered among those who speculate as they please, become objects of ridicule if they are kept in mind. What need is there to speak of those who do them?" The Bodhisattva said, "Great King, you speak thus."
