Please do not bestow. It is not appropriate to act in such a way even towards those who are known for their virtuous deeds. If one is known for virtue because the king of gods and humans possesses the Dharma, one should not fall from that, and one should strive diligently to avoid shame. If someone is known to have qualities and is expected to be so, no matter what the situation, if you allow it, then the good name will increase as it is said. Otherwise, the reputation will become meaningless, like a dry well, and the reputation of merit will not increase. It is difficult for people to regain their reputation once it has declined. Like a nest of poisonous snakes, it is appropriate to abandon the household that has become a source of contention, and it is not appropriate for a single god to prevent me. You, as one who cherishes loyal subjects, should have said so. But I have resolved to renounce, so what use are worldly affairs to me? Having said this, the king granted permission, and he prepared to go to the forest of asceticism. Then, his friends, relatives, and those who relied on him gathered, weeping and grabbing his feet, not allowing him to leave. They spoke various kinds of gentle and harsh words, saying that there were still unfinished matters, and "Do you family members have no compassion?" and so on, saying many things and blocking his path, trying to make him return. He said: Friends, if I were indulging in recklessness and evil deeds, you should try various means to stop me. But now that I am alive and want to live in the forest, why do you hinder me? If you are unhappy about separating from me, why don't you come to the forest with me? If you don't allow me to practice asceticism, why don't you do the same to those who go to fight enemies or armies? Seeing the virtues of the household and the faults of asceticism and the forest is a perverted view. If I am great in virtue, then all of you should follow me and renounce. Worldly friendships are mostly unstable, like the behavior of dancers, and there is no certainty. If you cannot bear to separate with a steadfast mind, then, in a reasonable way, considering that those who want to go to the forest of asceticism should not be prevented, he persuaded them with extremely gentle words, and then he himself went to the forest of asceticism, diligently cultivated virtue, perfected discipline and ascetic practices, and devoted himself to meditation.

So. Thus, even for the mere words of a person who proclaims to have qualities when they have none, those who know qualities will not abandon them. What need is there to say that one should not degenerate from any quality once it has been attained? Like this, if one proclaims to have qualities by names such as monk, layperson, practitioner of Dharma, realized one, and so on, one should examine oneself and think, 'People expect this of me, I must not deceive them.' One must feel ashamed until one has adorned oneself with those qualities, knowing that this is the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, in a past time, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-datta, who was rich and had great wealth. There was a queen named Matchless Mother, who was beautiful and beloved by the king. At that time, on the southern side of Mount Snow, the Blessed One himself transformed into a peacock king named Golden Light, with a radiant form and limbs, a beak like a jewel, and five hundred attendants following him. Once, the peacock king crowed over the city of Varanasi in the middle of the night, and the queen Matchless Mother, who was staying on the roof, heard it and said to the king, 'Whose is this sound that is so delightful and loving?' The king said, 'Goddess, I have not seen it either, but I have heard that there is a peacock king named Golden Light on the southern side of Mount Snow, and its sound is melodious and pleasing.' The queen said, 'Please bring that peacock king here.' The king said, 'How can one see it flying in the sky?' The queen said, 'If I do not see that peacock king, I will die.' Because the king loved the queen Matchless Mother, he said, 'I will send hunters and bird catchers, wait for a while.' Then he said to the hunters and bird catchers, 'Go and catch that peacock king and bring it here. If you can catch it, that is good, but if you cannot, all of you will lose your lives.' After that, those hunters and bird catchers, fearing for their lives, took bird nets and traps and went to the southern side of Mount Snow to find the peacock.

In the direction where the king resided, even though snares and nets were set, wherever the peacock king looked, the snares would break and the nets would be torn. Even after seven days, the hunters could not capture the peacock king. Then, the peacock king felt compassion for them and said, 'You who live by hunting, why are you exhausted in this place?' They replied, 'May the peacock king know that King Brahmadatta has arranged this, and we strive in this way for the danger to our lives.' The peacock said, 'I cannot be caught by snares and nets. If King Brahmadatta wishes to see me, then have the city cleaned and decorated. On the seventh day, come here with a fourfold army, and I will go there.' They listened to the peacock's words, and as King Brahmadatta had instructed, the king decorated all the cities, harnessed a chariot of seven jewels, and went with his army to the southern side of the snowy mountains. The peacock king, appearing golden, was placed on the jewel chariot. When its voice arose, the king and his army were overjoyed and paid great homage, going to the city of Vārāṇasī. At the gate of that city, the peacock's voice arose, spreading throughout the entire city. All who lived there were delighted and came to see. There, they said to Queen Apratimā, 'This peacock will come to you on its own.' They were joyful and respectful. The king offered flowers and fruits to the peacock king. Another time, the king was busy with something and wondered who could make offerings to the peacock king. He thought, 'Queen Apratimā is wise and intelligent, so she can do it.' So he said, 'Goddess, please make offerings to this peacock king as I have done.' She also made offerings with flowers and fruits. Then, after some time, Queen Apratimā became attached to another man, and the time they arranged was in the garden where the peacock resided. The peacock taught the Dharma to that man, and the man, due to desire, abandoned adultery and then left.

That queen thought, "The peacock knows about my affair. This peacock king can speak human language. If he tells King Brahma-given, wouldn't I be killed?" So she gave the peacock king poisoned food and drink. But the peacock king remained so beautiful and pleasing to look at. When the queen became suspicious, the peacock king said, "I know you have fallen in love with another man. Even though you give me poisoned food, you cannot kill me." The queen was ashamed and vomited blood, became seriously ill and died, and was reborn in the Weeping Hell. The peacock king escaped safely, returned to his own abode, and taught the Dharma to all beings. The King Brahma-given at that time was Shariputra, and the queen Without Equal at that time is now the Brahman girl Illusion Mother." Furthermore, in the past, beyond countless eons, there was a king named Cart-carriage Woman, who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. Later, a son was born to him named Wisdom Light. When the Bhagavan was born as Wisdom Light, he possessed a wise mind and, surpassing others, was made the crown prince. Later, when the father king passed away and they were about to enthrone the prince as king, the prince said to the ministers, "I cannot be king. If I inflict punishments such as killing on these disobedient beings, I will incur sinful deeds. If the people of the country can practice the ten virtues, then I will be king." Everyone agreed and said, "Please be our witness," and so they enthroned him as king. He issued a decree to practice the ten virtues, and the king of demons became jealous. He wrote a slanderous letter saying that although they had done good deeds before, there were no obvious signs, and from now on they should practice the ten non-virtues, and he sent the letter to all the small kingdoms. Everyone was incredulous and reported it to the king. The king was surprised and thought, "I have not written such words, why has it become like this?" The king himself went to investigate whether the people had changed from before. On the way, the king of demons made the king hear the sound of a person suffering and struggling in the burning flames.
