His palace was called Jewel Light, made of the seven precious substances, and his wealth was extremely vast. His son, Prince Merit Light, was handsome and pleasing to the eye. As soon as he was born, a thousand treasures of the seven precious substances appeared. Inside the king's palace, treasures of the seven precious substances worth the size of ten people appeared. As soon as he was born, all the people of Jambudvipa rejoiced, and the prisoners were released from prison. The prince became skilled in all worldly arts. The gods of the Pure Abode spoke to him at midnight about stories of mindfulness, impermanence, the faults of desire, and verses seeking supreme enlightenment. He kept these in mind and for ten years, he did not look at sleep, drowsiness, revelry, or joyful things, but dwelled alone in thought. Thinking about the faults of the merciless cycle of existence, he remained silent and alone. There was a jewel palace, about one yojana in size, adorned with a hundred stables, inside which were arranged forty million beds for the youth. In the center, a garden was laid out with mango trees, jewel trees, and staircases. From a hundred and eight lion mouths flowed scented water, and various flowers bloomed perpetually. Eight hundred trees were connected by precious threads, and when they were moved by the wind, they emitted pleasing sounds like musical instruments. To prevent dust from touching the youth's body, the pond was covered with a jewel net. In the palace, forty million jewel thrones were arranged, and five hundred silk cushions were laid on top of them. The throne on which the prince sat was made of seven kinds of jewels, about seven standing men in height, and eighty-seven million silk cushions were laid on it. In front of all the thrones, agarwood was burned, and flowers were displayed three times during the day and three times during the night. Among them, although Prince Sonam Ozer was present, he thought, "I must not regard these places of enjoyment and songs and dances as the downfall that causes all my unfriendly groups and virtuous Dharma to completely decline." For example, just as a person to be executed does not feel surprised upon seeing the executioner, he does not feel amazed upon seeing women and other objects of desire. During those ten years, he did not even cling to the characteristics of form, sound, etc., except for thinking about when he would be freed from this unfriendly group and live a cautious life. King Ozerden, together with eighty thousand kings, went to where Prince Sonam Ozer was, with tears streaming down his face, falling to the ground for a moment and then standing up again, saying, "Son, I am sad for you, why are you not happy? Tell me, and I will punish him with a severe penalty. For your sake, what is missing in this delightful palace like a heavenly abode? Tell me. Look at the wealth like Indra, look at the group like celestial nymphs, do not be sad, and play with them," and so on, he expressed this meaning in verses. The one who saw the faults of existence and was weary of desire said, "Looking at the beings trapped in the net of samsara, please listen, father, I am seeking liberation. No god has made me unhappy, I do not like such desires." And so on, he spoke in verses about the faults of desires such as women, the ways in which the gods urged him, and his attitude of liking solitude. He abided by the three conducts of standing, walking, and sitting, and dispelled drowsiness and sleep. Having gone to the top of the house and stayed on the bare ground, when midnight arrived, the gods of the pure realms appeared and walked, praising the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Having heard this, his body bristled with hair, tears flowed, and with palms joined, he asked the gods, "Whose virtues do you praise as you walk in the sky?" Hearing this, he felt joy in his heart and spoke in verse. The gods replied in verse, saying, "The Buddha Don Drub Lo is dwelling together with the monks who are practicing meditation." The prince asked in verse, "What is the form of that Buddha like? And what is the Bodhi conduct like, by practicing which one becomes a Buddha?" The gods spoke in verse, praising the Buddha's excellent name and the distinctions of his qualities. Then, having heard the praise of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the prince was overjoyed and contemplated the Buddha's conduct, retinue, and teachings. He also contemplated the faults of desire. Being a slave to desire, deluded by afflictions, and dwelling among heedless beings, one cannot even practice the path to a good rebirth, let alone attain the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, if I go out through the door, my relatives will create obstacles. I intend to jump from this rooftop. The Tathagata Don Drub Lo jumped alone from the top of the mansion. Is that Tathagata all-knowing and all-seeing? He also said, "May the Tathagata consider this." The Tathagata Don Drub Lo extended his right hand, and light arose and touched the prince. From that light, hundreds of thousands of lotus petals appeared, as large as chariot wheels. From those lotuses, a great radiance of light spread, enveloping the prince, and he sat on the lotus, joining his palms beside the Buddha. "I prostrate!" he said three times.
