Giving one hundred million gold coins to each, you should go to the king and say, 'Until I return, do not kill this person,' and then quickly go to the king and say, 'I will redeem this person's life with good jewels.' The king said, 'This person's sins are great, so he cannot be released or sold. If you sincerely want to buy him, give me all your wealth and promise to die yourself, then he will be released.' Hearing these words, the merchant was very happy, protecting this person, thinking, 'My wishes are all fulfilled.' So he offered all the wealth in his house and the countless precious jewels obtained from the sea to the king, saying, 'Great king, please release this person. All my wealth is here.' The king took all the wealth and ordered the executioner, 'Take this wretched fellow away.' As he said, they took him away and began to stab him with a sword, but their hands became stiff and they could not stab him. They were amazed and reported to the king. The king himself took the sword, raised it, and tried to stab him, but at that moment, the king's hands fell to the ground, and he died in great pain. That foolish king at that time was Devadatta. Again, in the past, a heretical hermit became one with clairvoyance. One night, he lost his way in the darkness, and in order to show the way to five hundred merchants who were lost, helpless, and wailing, he wrapped his hands in oil-soaked cloth, lit them on fire, and burned them all night to illuminate the road. Because of his pure intention and the virtuous act of seeking enlightenment, his hands were restored to their original state by dawn. The merchants were amazed and admired him, and in order to repay his kindness, they began to think of virtue. Again, in the past, when the Bhagavan was the leader of a herd of deer, the king's army surrounded the deer. There, he entered the center of a raging river that was difficult to cross and said to the deer, 'Place your feet on my back and cross to the shore.' Therefore, the hooves of the deer trampled on his back, even breaking his bones.

Even having become like that, he did not give up his effort, and after crossing everything, thinking, 'What has not been crossed?' he looked back and saw that a fawn had not crossed. Experiencing the pain of broken bones and dislocated joints, he carried the fawn on his back and crossed the river, attained unsurpassed enlightenment, and made the aspiration to liberate sentient beings from samsara, and then passed away. The deer at that time were the giants of the Grass City, and that fawn was said to be the Parivrājaka Subhadra. Again, in the past, in Varanasi, a king named Brahmadatta ruled the kingdom according to dharma. When his horse Caṇḍaśakti died, a minor king of Kham heard that Caṇḍaśakti had died and sent a messenger, saying: 'Either give tribute, or pay the city gate tax, otherwise, I will certainly tie a rope around your neck and bring you here.' He neither gave tribute nor paid the city gate tax, but searched for the horse Caṇḍaśakti and found it. In the spring, when the flowers were in bloom, he went into the forest, and before he returned to the city, the minor king of Kham heard about it and sent four divisions of troops. King Brahmadatta rode the horse Caṇḍaśakti and engaged in battle with the four divisions of troops. Another minor king thrust a spear into the flank of the horse Caṇḍaśakti, and experiencing the pain of prolapsed intestines and severed vital points, he endured and persevered, thinking, 'I must get the king to the city before he is in danger.' So, he placed his feet on the flowers of the Brahmadatta pond, which was filled with various kinds of flowers, and crossed the pond, allowing the king to escape safely to his own country, and that horse passed away. The king thought, 'It was the horse Caṇḍaśakti who saved my life, I should bestow the kingdom upon him, but it is too late. Even if it were not too late, what good would it do to bestow it?' So, he made offerings for him. That horse Caṇḍaśakti was the Bhagavan. Again, in the past, at the foot of the King of Snow Mountains, there lived five hundred elephants, and one of them became the king of elephants, and he was beautiful and pleasing. These elephants stayed at night in a dangerous and narrow place where there was only one path, and five hunters saw them and blocked that dangerous and narrow path at night with a great rope.

Having carved, thinking, "Let all these elephants be driven out, and we can take them as we please," the elephants passed by there. When they were driven onto the whirlpool, they knew there was a whirlpool and could not cross. The elephant king then lay his own body across the whirlpool, making a bridge, and five hundred elephants trampled over his back and crossed. After they had gone, he himself jumped and crossed the whirlpool. The gods said: "Even if the wicked have dug a deep whirlpool, the wise elephant lord, contemplating both self and others, what is the use of digging a deep whirlpool in vain?" Thus they spoke. Again, having become the horse king with the power of clouds, he safely transported the merchants who had fallen into the island of the Rakshasas back to Jambudvipa. Again, when he became the lion with the mane, five hundred like-minded individuals were surrounded by a cruel illusionist. Without regard for his own body and life, he liberated them. Again, when he became the captain named "Wealth Carriage," out of compassion for five merchants, he boarded a ship with them for their sake, and a strong wind threatened to wreck the ship. The captain said, "Do not be afraid! If the ship sinks, grab onto me, and I will carry you across." Having said this, he tucked great jewels under his armpits, and when the ship sank, they all grabbed onto the captain. He struggled to cross, and exhausted and weary, with only a little bit of life remaining, he reached the shore. The captain died, having run out of breath. They dragged the corpse to a dry place, and seeing a collection of jewels in his armpits, they took them and returned to their homeland, becoming free from poverty. Again, when he became the captain who protects all, in a desolate wilderness, due to lack of water, he saved five hundred weary merchants, and five particularly distressed merchants there. By invoking the gods with words of truth, the Great Powerful One caused rain to fall, and he easily freed them from the desolate wilderness, and so on. In the past, as a Bodhisattva, he performed countless deeds of giving relief to sentient beings afflicted by various kinds of poverty and fear, and making them fearless. Here, this is what appears in the Sutra.

This is a narration of some aspects of giving. This is the chapter on giving. Formerly, immeasurably long ago, in a kalpa called Manifest Joy, in a world called the Land of Bliss, there appeared a Bhagavan called Like Mount Meru. At that time, there was a universal monarch called Auspicious Arrangement, who had a full thousand sons. At that time, the lifespan of sentient beings was seven billion years. That king, together with his thousand sons and consorts, made offerings to that Buddha with all kinds of things, listened to the Dharma, generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and obtained the subsequent forbearance. A Dharma speaker, Dharma Banner, generated the mind of enlightenment and praised the virtues of ordination. King Auspicious Arrangement, disliking the pleasures of desire and the kingdom, desired to be ordained, and the Tathagata granted it. That king said to his thousand sons, "Which of you is willing to rule the kingdom and engage sentient beings in upholding the Dharma?" They all said, "We too, with faith, have no home and have been ordained, so please ordain us." The king said, "If all of you are ordained, then all the beings of the four continents will be wasted. From among you, one who does not look to his own benefit but has great compassion for sentient beings should rule the kingdom and cause sentient beings to uphold it correctly." Among those youths, a prince called Great Compassionate Mind said to his father and elders, "The Tathagatas have said that ordination accumulates many qualities. Even so, because of compassion, I will rule the kingdom for the benefit of beings. As long as I live, I will practice celibacy and take the eight vows of purification." After speaking these verses, everyone gave their approval and praised him, and he was placed on the throne. The king and the thousand sons, except for one, were ordained and generated the five clairvoyances, dharanis, and knowledge of the Dharma. Prince Great Compassionate Mind
