I wish to benefit all beings by obtaining the jewel, and I wish to attain enlightenment through this merit. If I do not lose heart, why can't I dry up this ocean? At that time, the gods such as Vishnu, seeing from afar the Bodhisattva alone scooping up seawater and striving for the benefit of many beings, informed each other and all came to the Bodhisattva's presence. Seeing the Bodhisattva scooping water with a vessel, those gods each took off their divine garments and dipped them into the water, and with one pull, the ocean's water decreased by forty yojanas. Dipping it in again, it decreased by eighty yojanas. Dipping it in three times, it decreased by one hundred and twenty yojanas, so the nagas were terrified and came to the Bodhisattva's presence, saying: Please stop, do not dry up the ocean's water! The Bodhisattva then ceased his efforts. Then the nagas asked the Bodhisattva: What do you need this precious jewel for? I need it to benefit all beings. The nagas said: If it is for the benefit of beings, there are also many beings in the ocean, why abandon them? The Bodhisattva said: Those who live in the ocean are also beings, but they do not have the suffering of poverty. But the people of Jambudvipa harm each other for wealth, committing the ten non-virtuous deeds, and after death are born in hell. Because I pity them, I need this jewel. The Brahmin of Kapilavastu adorned his daughter with various jewels and sent a water vessel filled with jewels. He used it to wash the Bodhisattva's feet, then took his daughter's hand and gave her to the Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva accepted her. The Brahmin was overjoyed and, after adorning five hundred servant girls and five hundred elephants with jewels, he sent them to the Bodhisattva with music. At that time, the parents of the great giver cried because of their separation from their son, causing both of their eyes to go blind. When they met their son, he prostrated to his parents, and they grasped his hand, recognizing him as their son. "Great giver, after you left us, our eyes also went blind. What did you find by going to the ocean?" He placed the jewel in his father's hand and said, "I found this." The parents took the jewel and said, "Stones like this, I already have many in my storehouse. Why did you need to suffer and strive like this?" Then, the Bodhisattva took back the jewel and wiped his parents' eyes. Just as a strong wind scatters clouds, both of his parents' eyes became clearer than before. The parents rejoiced and looked at the true jewel, saying, "It has become the cure for the disease of suffering." Then, the great giver took the jewel and prayed that a jewel cushion would appear beneath his parents and a jewel canopy above them. Immediately after praying, it happened as he wished, and all the storehouses were filled. Disregarding the obstacles and many afflictions in the ocean, I retrieved the jewel. Now you can all live without worry. Now you must restrain your body, speech, and mind, and strive to practice the path of the ten virtuous deeds!
