At that time, sentient beings have a strong inclination towards desire, a strong inclination towards hatred, and a strong inclination towards ignorance. Desire is intense, hatred is diminished, and ignorance is intense. They are attached to and cling to what is not Dharma. Attachment is weakened and suppressed. They completely accept wrong views. They resent their father, resent their mother, resent their brothers, resent their sisters, resent their spouses, resent their relatives, resent the noble ones, resent the Khenpos and Acharyas, resent themselves, and resent others. Among the impure, the violent, and those who do not understand, if I cannot become the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Buddha, what is to be done? Having purified my aspiration in this way, and abiding in such a degenerate time, Ananda, with great compassion as my guide, and possessing great compassion, when I now enter villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and the palaces of kings to teach the Dharma, they will revile me, scold me, not allow me into the Sangha, and speak rudely. Ananda, they will also say that I am a nihilist, and they will also say that I am an eternalist. They will also gossip that I desire many followers. Even if I enter someone's home, quarrels will arise because of me. They will also offer food mixed with poison, and they will also prepare a pile of fire. Like this, even if I become a Buddha, a woman named Sundari will slander me for engaging in sexual acts with me. Ananda, with great compassion as my guide, and possessing great compassion, I now teach the Dharma to such sentient beings. Having said this, the venerable Ananda said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, your teaching the Dharma to such sentient beings is like the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha, subduing the unsubdued, bearing great burdens, and practicing austerities. It is excellent. Furthermore, our teacher, for the benefit of sentient beings, in order to seek unsurpassed wisdom, while practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, has passed through countless eons.

In a previous life, in this Jambudvipa, there was a king named Great Chariot who ruled over five thousand small kingdoms. The Tathagata took birth as his youngest son, named Great Compassion. At that time, a tigress gave birth to cubs and, suffering from hunger and thirst for many days, was about to eat her own cubs. Great Compassion, with a compassionate heart, used a branch to draw blood from his own body and allowed the tigress to lick it, gradually letting her eat all his flesh, thus giving up his life. Afterwards, he was born in the Tushita heaven and dispelled his mother's sorrow. Furthermore, in a past time, the Tathagata became a king named Moonlight, who ruled over Jambudvipa. He had a radiant body, was as beautiful as a god, and possessed great royal power and wealth. Because of his past virtuous deeds, he became like this. Thinking that he should do good deeds now as well, he announced that he would give away all the treasures in his vaults. He satisfied everyone with whatever they desired, whether it was food, clothing, jewels, or medicine. He made everyone like the king himself, living happily and joyfully. At that time, the king's fame spread throughout the land. A small border king named Bima Sena became jealous, thinking: If I do not eliminate King Moonlight, his fame will overshadow my name and merits. How can I eliminate him? So he asked the wandering mendicants. They said: King Moonlight is as loving as a parent to all beings, we cannot harm him. The king was displeased and announced: Whoever can cut off King Moonlight's head and bring it to me, I will give them half of my kingdom and my daughter in marriage. A Brahmin named Violent Eye, who lived in the mountains, heard this news and said: I will do it. He recited mantras (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) for seven days to protect his body, took provisions from the king, and set out on his journey. At that time, many inauspicious omens occurred in King Moonlight's kingdom, such as earthquakes and falling stars. The ministers had bad dreams. At that time, the goddess guarding the city gate saw that the Brahmin was drunk.

He was deceived and did not enter. Then, in order for the gods of the Pure Abodes to complete King Moonbeam's perfection of generosity, they urged him to give in a dream. Then the king sent the minister Great Moon, instructing him, "Do not stop anyone who comes from the city gate, let them in." When Great Moon went to the gate, the gatekeeper god revealed his body and said, "This Brahmin who has come from another land has come with a sinful mind to beg for the king's head, so he was not allowed in." The minister said, "If that is true, it is a very bad omen. However, the king's command cannot be broken," he instructed. Then the city guardian god let the Brahmin in, and the minister Great Moon gave five hundred heads made of the seven precious jewels, but deceiving the king's head was not successful, and the king's head was begged for. The king was pleased and promised to do so in seven days. There, the minister Great Moon and Earth Holder also died of grief and were reborn in the Brahma world. That king proclaimed in all lands, "Let all who wish to see King Moonbeam give his head come." At that time, all the petty kings gathered and pleaded not to give the head, but they could not stop him. When he took the crown from his head, the crowns of the heads of all the people of Jambudvipa fell to the ground. Then, in the pleasure garden called Essence of Precious Jewels behind that city, tie the head to a champaka tree, cut off the head and place it in my hand, and then take it. With this generosity of mine, I desire unsurpassed perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings," he said. When that Brahmin took up his sword to cut, the tree god struck the Brahmin with one palm, and he fell. The king said to the tree god, "In the past, I have also given nine hundred and ninety-nine heads from this tree. Now he is completing the giving of a thousand heads, do not hinder my perfection of generosity and unsurpassed enlightenment," he instructed. After saying this, the god restored the Brahmin to his original state. After the king made a great aspiration, that Brahmin cut off the king's head.

Then, having passed away, he was born as a god in the heaven of Excellent Increase. At that time, the earth shook in six ways, and the tears of humans and gods fell like rain, and rain of divine flowers and the like also fell. King Moonlight, having given his head, perfected the pāramitā of generosity, and this great fame spread across the earth. King Sand-Army, having heard this, was displeased and his heart broke, and he passed away. The Brahmin, carrying the king's head, and the minor kings, ministers, consorts, and all the people wailed in mourning. Some passed away, some fainted and became unconscious, some scratched their faces, tore their hair, and fell to the ground. When that Brahmin went on his way, everyone reviled him, and seeing the king's head as ugly and foul-smelling, they threw it on the ground and went away. King Sand-Army also heard that he had passed away, and his heart broke with grief that his hope had not been fulfilled, and he vomited blood and passed away. Both the king and that Brahmin were born in the great hell of sentient beings. All those who, tormented by grief for King Moonlight, passed away, were born as gods in the higher realms. King Sand-Army was a wicked demon, that Brahmin was God-given, Minister Great Moon was Śāriputra, and Earth-Holder was the son of Maudgalyāyana, so it was said. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, the giving of his head by King Great Rays also occurred in a similar manner. Again, in a previous life, the teacher of a great king who ruled this Jambudvipa, a Brahmin named Nyagrodha, who was revered by all like a king, whose wealth rivaled that of the son of Vaiśravaṇa, his son, named Great Generosity, in whom the Blessed One took birth, that boy was also handsome, endowed with marks, and had reached the far shore of all the Vedas and arts. When he went out of the city with great wealth, he saw the poor and the various people who lived by sin, and shedding tears of compassion, he asked his father to give alms, and his father granted it. He gave whatever they wanted to all the beggars of the country, and gradually two-thirds of the treasury was exhausted, and when only one part remained, he requested the Brahmin who guarded the treasury in this way, but because he could not go against his son's wishes, he dared not speak. As if saying, "Find an excuse as if you are not free."
