Please grant your blessings. I prostrate to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the noble Savior. I offer and take refuge. Recite seven times. At this time, offer whatever offerings are available. Bhagavan, Noble Savior, please consider with compassion the impoverished and suffering beings in this degenerate age. The Teacher, the Bhagavan, spoke thus before the assembly: Venerable Bhagavan, in future lives and times, beings will be tormented by various diseases. Prolonged illness will thin the flesh of their bodies, and hunger and thirst will dry their throats and lips. They will be clearly heading towards death. Friends, relatives, and in-laws will surround them, weeping. They will see darkness in all directions. The messengers of Yama will lead them away, and even though their body lies here, their consciousness will be taken before the Dharma King Yama. The deity born with that person, following behind, will write down in detail all the good or non-virtuous deeds they have done and present them to the Dharma King Yama. The Dharma King Yama will question and investigate them, and instruct them according to the good or non-virtuous deeds they have done. Those who, for the sake of the sick person, take refuge in the Bhagavan, the Tathagata, the Medicine Buddha, the King of Lapis Lazuli Light, and make offerings in this way, their consciousness will return, and as if in a dream, they will reach the place they know. Either seven umbrellas, or twenty-one umbrellas, or thirty-five umbrellas, or forty-nine umbrellas, their consciousness will return, they will regain their memory, and the ripening of the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions will become clear to them. For the sake of their lives, they will no longer commit evil deeds. The method of offering is this: Venerable Ananda, those who wish to be completely liberated from great illness should, for the sake of the sick person, take the eight-limbed vows of purification for seven days and seven nights. One should remember the name of the Tathagata, the King of Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light. This sutra should also be recited forty-nine times. Lamps should be lit for forty-nine days. Seven Buddha images should be made. In front of each Buddha image, seven lamps should be placed. The size of each lamp should be made as large as a chariot wheel, ensuring that the lamps do not run out for forty-nine days. More than forty-nine five-colored banners should be made. Venerable Ananda, for those kings who have been crowned from the royal lineage, whether it is the harm of disease, or the harm from one's own or another's army, whether it is the harm of constellations, the moon, or the sun, or the harm of untimely wind, rain, or drought. If harm and plague or war are imminent, then the king who has been crowned should generate a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Those who have been imprisoned should be released, and as mentioned above, such offerings should be made to the Bhagavan Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light King. By the king's roots of virtue and the special qualities of the Bhagavan Medicine Master Lapis Lazuli Light King's past aspirations, the country will be peaceful, the years will be prosperous, the rain and wind will be timely, and the crops will be abundant. All sentient beings living in that country will also be free from disease, happy, and exceedingly joyful. In that country, yakshas, rakshasas, spirits, and flesh-eating demons will not harm sentient beings. All bad omens will not appear. The king's life, appearance, strength, health, and power will all visibly increase. Such teachings and so on, because they are the true words of the noble ones, as you have promised, today also please descend into this palace mandala of the offering assembly, accept the offerings, and from samadhi, recall the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, exhort and completely fulfill the rituals of the sutra. Bodhisattva Mahasattva Vajrapani, as well as Brahma, Indra the lord of gods, the great king Dhrtarastra, Aryajata, Virupaksa, Kubera, and all the great virtuous friends among the gods who protect the holy Dharma, as in the past before the great assembly, at the place where the oath of the gods is true, with earnest words, unanimously said: "O Bhagavan, we have also heard of the extensive and excellent aspirations of the seven Tathagatas in the past, and we have also directly seen the Tathagatas and made offerings. Furthermore, O Bhagavan, in whatever place these names and dharani words of the Tathagatas are practiced, we will go there together with our retinue. Whichever son or daughter holds, reads, makes offerings, or strives to write this (sutra), we will be together in harmony. Whether it is a son or daughter, a king or a minister of the king, who holds or writes this sutra, we will protect them with the blessings of the Tathagatas. We will also completely protect villages, cities, and regions. Death, enemies, the harm of wilderness, and all diseases will be completely pacified. We are loving towards the Tathagatas and all sentient beings, and we are doers of beneficial deeds. We will avert all untimely deaths. All strife, battles, disputes, and conflicts will be completely pacified. May all thoughts and wishes be fulfilled as desired, may mind and body be at ease, and may enjoyment, power, wealth, and grains increase. We will protect at all times and places. They will be born in those Buddha-fields that they desire. They will see the Tathagatas. They will remember their past lives. They will also obtain samadhi and dharani.
