The ground itself pacifies into the ground, going without thought. How does one abide based on these? The first experience is like water flowing rapidly and unstably down a steep mountain, a time of fleeting thoughts. Slightly grasping the mind, the arising and gathering of thoughts is awareness, so it should not be seen as a fault. The second experience is like a swirling southern cloud, becoming hazy and dim. Sometimes realization abides, sometimes it arises and scatters. Abiding should not be seen as a virtue, and scattering should not be seen as a fault. One should cultivate single-pointedness of mind to become more stable. The third experience is like a river flowing slowly. Sometimes a little bliss abides, and sometimes a little agitation arises. The fourth experience is like an ocean without waves. Day and night, continuously, bliss abides, and it arises as if thoughts do not move at all. This has two aspects: faulty and faultless. In a state of darkness, dullness, and blankness, one should elevate awareness, exert effort, and repeatedly make fervent prayers. The faultless aspect is that movement does not waver from the ground, and abiding is stable upon movement. Awareness recognizes its own face. It is close to realizing the self-face of the primordial purity of the ground luminosity, and the one who introduces it, the experienced one, is very important. In short, one must gain stability in shamatha (calm abiding), where all collections of thoughts, encompassing abiding, movement, and awareness, are self-pacified and self-dissolved, abiding in their own place. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Having known that vipashyana (insight), which is fully established in shamatha, utterly destroys afflictions, one should first seek shamatha; that too is accomplished by being free from attachment to the world." Third, the introduction to vipashyana is: Thus, placing the mind in its own nature, in the state of abiding, all subtle and coarse thoughts are self-pacified within themselves, and the state of mind abiding in its own place is the nature of shamatha. At that time of abiding, because the movement of thoughts has ceased, one is free from negative thoughts. Because there is no grasping of the meditator, one is free from positive thoughts. Because the mind is clear as self-awareness without an object, one is free from non-determined thoughts. Like the center of clear space, the unapprehended awareness gives rise to the certainty of non-thought, and seeing the self-face of reality is the nature of vipashyana. Incidentally, the introduction to the union of shamatha and vipashyana:
