"Steadfastly look and relax without distraction in that state." This means that, in reality, there is neither something to be seen nor someone who sees, but for beginners, it seems that there is something to be seen and someone who sees. However, in reality, there is nothing other than the self-luminous clarity of the mind. For example, when someone utters harsh words, even if you look at their essence, you may feel unpleasant for a moment, but in the end, it is just the appearance of emptiness. The essence of delusion is to cling to the habitual tendencies of whatever appears as an object. Without being distracted from this essence, and without separating from the mindfulness of one's own mind, relax in the state of arising and liberation simultaneously. Delusion, or ignorance, is the illusion that arises from not knowing the true nature of the mind. If we explain this from the ground or root, it is due to the power of ignorance that the mind's alaya, the sugatagarbha, is obscured by adventitious stains. Because of this, we grasp at the absence of self as self, and grasp at the absence of essence as essence. Therefore, the outer world of environment and the inner world of beings are merely appearances of illusion and are not established as real entities. All happiness and suffering, good and bad, are merely illusions of the mind. Like the wheel of illusion of a magician, the magician himself knows it, while others cling to it as real and become deluded by enjoying it. The way to look at it is to hold onto the habitual tendencies that appear as objects with mindfulness, and maintain them in their natural state without clinging. Appearances do not bind, clinging binds. Yogi, cut off clinging! That is what it means. The essence of attachment is that wealth and possessions, and implements that are aroused by intense desire, and all thoughts filled with hope and worry, with the mind strongly attached to relatives, friends, and companions, should all be placed in a state of simultaneous arising and liberation, recognizing whatever arises in the self-liberation, non-grasping state, without aim or fixation. As mentioned above, due to the influence of ignorance and delusion, hatred arises towards unpleasant objects, and attachment arises towards pleasant objects. For example, when a magician conjures good and bad horses and elephants, the groups of beings with minds like children who do not understand the nature of the mind become attached to the good, giving rise to attachment; they hate the bad, giving rise to hatred; and they become attached to the neutral habitual tendencies, giving rise to delusion, which is all illusion. Its essence is to cling to what one likes, becoming very attached, hoping to obtain what others have, and what one has

Regarding the uneasy, dazed state of mind fearing to fall into distraction, abiding without aiming or fixating, letting it naturally dissolve, without clinging to any appearance, recognizing that whatever arises is simultaneously self-liberated, appearance and liberation are simultaneous, like drawing a picture on water, naturally self-dissolving, abiding without basis or root. Similarly, the method of taking the five poisons' thoughts as the path is: when the ear consciousness clearly hears a sound, without doing any analysis or thinking about the sound, but rather maintaining the nature of self-awareness that hears the sound, and taking it as the path. Similarly, the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind should all be used in this way, this is the teaching of Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava). Like this, by focusing on the meaning of "Appearances in the field of the eyes..." and so on, one will understand. Now, I will explain this introduction again, because it is very important: In Mahamudra it says: Introduce in emptiness, train in appearance, experience in the union of appearance and emptiness, so that subsequent wisdom arises like lightning, this is one taste. Subsequent wisdom appears like an illusion, this is freedom from elaboration. Subsequent wisdom appears like emptiness, this is one taste. Whether together or separate, with or without practice, all has been explained. In the Great Perfection teachings it says: Introduce in self-nature, cut through in one decision, abide in confidence of liberation. That is to say, for the present awareness that is free from the thoughts of the three times, without adding any modification, maintaining the natural, co-emergent self-nature of Samantabhadri, this is introducing in self-nature. The four-thirds separation, the Dharmakaya, the intention beyond mind, is cutting through in one decision. What is that? It is the three separations, free from the thoughts of the three times. The present, raw awareness is called four parts, which is the pure state unmodified by memory. For any appearance of the three poisons (greed, hatred, delusion) and the five poisons, without modifying it, but rather maintaining awareness, relaxing into its nature, thereby causing thoughts and concepts to disappear without a trace, like waves dissolving into water, any appearance is naturally liberated, generating confidence in the state of being free from acceptance and rejection. Self-liberation, non-clinging, appearance-liberation simultaneous, there are six ways of liberation: Self-liberation has no antidote, like a snake knot naturally untying itself. 1) Primordial liberation has no basis for repetition, like a knot in the sky dissolving. 2) Naked liberation, through seeing the key point of no self-nature nakedly, liberating like meeting someone you recognize. 3) Self-liberation has no essence, like a thief entering an empty house.
