Then there is no opportunity to practice Dharma. If one is born into a family of heretical views that is cut off from the lineage, one will not enter the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, now we are born in the southern continent of Jambudvipa. In this time when the Buddha's teachings exist, we have obtained a human body with all the faculties, and we have met a supreme lama. In this time when we are free to do anything, if we do not practice the supreme Dharma, then we are wasting this precious human body! The dividing line between up and down is now. Those who waste their lives are truly pitiful! Thus it is said. This is also said to be difficult to obtain from the perspective of examples, difficult to obtain from the perspective of numbers, and difficult to obtain from the perspective of causes. The first point is: Just as the Udumbara flower is rare in the world, it is difficult to obtain a human body. Just as it is difficult for a blind turtle to insert its neck into the hole of a yoke in the ocean, it is difficult to obtain a human body. It is difficult to get even one bean to stick when throwing beans against a wall, it is even more difficult to obtain a human body than that. Maha Guru Padmasambhava said: It is extremely difficult to obtain a human body with leisure and endowments. How difficult is it? It is like throwing beans against a sloping wall and not having them stick, or a blind turtle inserting its neck into the hole of a floating yoke in the ocean, or throwing a mustard seed into the eye of an upright needle and not having it go in, it is extremely difficult to obtain a human body. The second point is: This is an example of the difficulty. The six realms of sentient beings are like a pile of stacked grains. The three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals are like the foundation of the pile. Asuras are like the waist. Gods and humans are like the top. Seeing the bodies of other beings in the six realms, it is almost impossible to obtain a human body. Seeing the scattered bodies of animals, it is like the end of existence. Please estimate the number of sentient beings in the six realms. The third point is: The cause for obtaining leisure and endowments is that one must keep pure precepts. Now, if it is difficult to keep even the precept of not killing, how can one obtain a human body? Furthermore, all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, great beings, and accomplished ones of the past attained Buddhahood by relying on this precious human body and practicing the supreme Dharma properly. Remembering this, recite the second point of the meditation. Thus, even if we have obtained leisure and endowments, because we are constantly subject to death, if we do not meditate on death and impermanence, even if we have obtained leisure and endowments, we are the same as animals, so meditating on impermanence is the root of all Dharmas. Impermanence

Through meditation, attachment to relatives diminishes, hatred towards enemies disappears, it becomes a spur to diligence, unnecessary thoughts arise in the mind, and one can endure hardships for the Dharma. As it is said: "Contemplate on the certainty of death, abandon clinging to permanence; contemplate on the uncertainty of when death will occur, restrain the mind of clinging to permanence; contemplate on the meaninglessness of non-Dharma, practice the supreme Dharma." As it is said, there is no one who remains without dying, therefore I will certainly die. This body has no solidity that does not die, it is a composite phenomenon, therefore it will die. Life is consumed day and night, moment by moment, with no addition, therefore it will die. There is no certainty of when death will occur in life, therefore it will die at an unpredictable time. The causes of death are many, and it will die without knowing which cause of death will bring it about. The causes of life are few, and there is no certainty of not dying even for today, therefore it will die. When the time of certain death arrives, even with much food and wealth, one cannot escape death. Even with many relatives, one cannot escape death. Even cherishing one's own body and nourishing it with food and clothing, one cannot escape death. As it is said in the scripture itself: "Sentient beings of the six realms wandering in the wheel of samsara, the illusory body is impermanent, like autumn flowers, uncertain when they will wither. This life is impermanent, like the shadow of the sun, fleeting in an instant. Wealth is impermanent, like dew on the tip of grass, one should abandon miserly accumulation. Retinue, friends, relatives are like guests at a market, eventually dispersing separately. Sudden obstacles arise like wind, the mind is like a lamp, uncertain when it will be extinguished. Composite phenomena have no time to be completed, like an illusory city. Endless activities delude oneself, wandering repeatedly in samsara. The wheel of samsara has no end, swirling like dust in the sunlight. How the karmic body will be taken in the next life is frightening. In the intermediate state without refuge or support, suffering torments. The karma, afflictions, and sins accumulated from the past are difficult to purify. The five poisons of affliction, if not subdued by antidotes, will bring about our own destruction. Arrogance, miserliness, dependence, clinging, these! Helpless, like being struck naked by hail. When will the time of impermanent death come! The accumulation of this life is like a merchant's goods being plundered by robbers. When! The fields of the next life are like the ocean being dried up by time. When! The path of the next life is like walking swiftly without a guide. Frightening!"
