Whatever causes obstacles is called a demon. Also, whatever bestows benefits is called a god, and whatever causes harm is called a demon. This is because worldly people call gods and demons based solely on good and bad, benefit and harm, which is just the wishful thinking of the ignorant and not based on reality. Therefore, the good can also cause harm, and the bad can also bestow benefits. There are many cases where benefits are bestowed at first, but harm is brought later; and there are also cases where harm is done at first, but benefits are bestowed later, so there is no certainty. Even if what the good are attached to is made into a god, it will bring harm. Even if what the bad dislike is made into a demon, it will bestow benefits. Therefore, there is no definite way to say what is meant by "god" and "demon." Holding onto the concept of gods and demons based solely on good and bad, benefit and harm, is a fabrication of worldly people and does not conform to reality. Therefore, those who practice Chöd (the severance practice) completely disapprove of clinging to gods and demons based solely on benefit and harm. They do not even give the names of gods and demons to good and bad, benefit and harm. They do not proclaim their sound, but recognize their falsity and take them as the path. Second, regarding the gods and demons of essence and existence, there are two kinds of gods: gods of worldly existence and gods beyond worldly existence. There are also two kinds of transcendent gods: those who transcend both the causes and effects of samsara and the place of samsara, and those who do not transcend the place of samsara. That is, the Great Vajradhara, the Buddhas of the ten directions, the Great Mother, and Buddhas such as Amitabha, who dwell in the place of Akanishta with their retinue, are gods who transcend both the place and the causes and effects of the world. But in this world of suffering, the Blessed One, the victorious Shakyamuni Buddha himself, and bodhisattvas such as Avalokiteśvara, Maitreya, Vajrapani, and Manjushri, are bodhisattvas who do not transcend the place of the world, but transcend the karma and causes and effects of samsara. Worldly gods are the gods of the formless realm, the form realm, and the desire realm, and these are called worldly gods. Both of these are called gods of essence and existence. "Demon" refers to the form that is widely known in the world.

Those who are arrogant, cruel, powerful, and capable of displaying great magical abilities, and who harm many sentient beings with form, such as Yama, demons, fierce eight classes of gods and demons, and others who harbor malicious intent, are called ghosts. That is to say, in the minds of worldly people, because the eight classes of gods and demons and others who harbor malicious intent are truly present at all times, they are called ghosts of essential existence. That is to say, if those who give help are called gods, then the eight classes of gods and demons and others can also give help. Because they can increase the food, wealth, and merit of all worldly people, therefore ghosts, the eight classes of gods and demons, etc., are also gods. If those who cause harm are ghosts, then if the ordinary worldly gods are displeased, they will also cause harm, so those gods must also be ghosts. Therefore, the worldly custom is to regard those who give help as gods, those who cause harm as ghosts, and to regard worldly gods as definite gods, and to regard the essential eight classes of gods and demons, etc., as definite ghosts. However, in the custom of the Chö practitioners, this needs to be reversed. That is to say, those relatives and friends who are loving and caring for you will say, "It is not appropriate for you to go to the mountains to practice the Dharma. You yourself will be impoverished due to lack of food and clothing, and you will be tormented by illness and suffering, without friends and affection, and afflictions will arise, so stay at home, and we will provide good conditions. We cannot abandon you." In this way, they become demons on the path to liberation, obstructing virtuous deeds, and become ghosts. Therefore, one should recognize that those who are loving and giving help are demons or ghosts, and for those who hate and harm oneself, one should cultivate compassion, think of the karmic consequences of previous lives, and cultivate joy. One should think that they are gods who transform oneself onto the path to enlightenment. One should not be attached to worldly gods either, for if one is attached, one will become a ghost wandering in samsara. One should not have even a hair's breadth of reliance on worldly gods. One should firmly grasp the eight classes of gods and demons, etc., with a mind of compassion, include them in one's retinue and cherish and protect them, because relying on them one can enter into virtuous deeds, therefore they are gods. Therefore, for those who harm oneself, one should cultivate lov
