Upon seeing, attachment arises towards beautiful forms; hatred arises towards ugly forms. Similarly, with the ears, nose, body, and their respective sensory objects—sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations—attachment arises towards the pleasant, and hatred arises towards the unpleasant. Therefore, clinging to attachment and hatred as a duality is called a demon. Because of attachment and hatred towards what actually exists in the realm of the senses, the senses are obstructed, causing harm to the mind, and becoming a cause for binding to samsara, hence it is called a demon. Because one is obstructed by clinging to the good and bad of actually existing objects, it is called a demon with obstruction. Therefore, whatever good or bad one clings to and is attached to, that is a demon, so one should abandon attachment and clinging to anything. Because form is empty in its very nature as the essence of form itself, and because that form is not inherently existent, one should not have attachment or hatred towards form, but should meditate on its very nature of emptiness. The appearance of form cannot be denied, but it should not be grasped as true either; it is merely an appearance. By abandoning attachment to that mere appearance, one is liberated from form. Similarly, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations are also the same, so keep this in mind. The so-called unobstructed demon is when, although not actually appearing in the realm of the senses, whatever good or bad thoughts arise in one's mind, if one clings to the fearful thought of "this is a demon," one becomes frightened; if one clings to the joyful thought of "this is a god," one feels comfortable and happy. In this way, by clinging to both good and bad thoughts in the mind, the mind becomes afflicted because of these thoughts. Although these afflictions have no actual obstruction and do not exist as real objects, they will certainly cause harm by causing the mind to indulge in unwholesome actions, and that is called a demon. Because it does not actually exist and has no actual obstruction, it is called an unobstructed demon. Therefore, the mind that clings to the good called "god" and the bad called "demon," and so on, clinging to faults and virtues as a duality, has no real existence, not even as small as a hair tip, from the very beginning. Therefore, one should know that it is rootless and baseless, and is emptiness. One should not try to stop the arising feelings and other things that appear in the mind, but should

Nor does it prevent its arising. Nor does it impose any concepts upon it. Whatever thoughts arise, do not rely on the mind, do not be bound by thoughts. Because the nature of mind is inherently vast and clear, various thoughts arise. For example, even without agitation, waves arise in the ocean. Similarly, do not modify any thoughts that arise in the mind, but leave them as they are, and you will effortlessly overcome the power of demons. Abandoning attachment to the mind, letting body and mind relax without movement, effortlessly dissolves the power of demons on its own. The demon of joy and pride: To be joyful and proud of what one's mind clings to, this is called inner joy. The reasons for this are worldly wealth, respect, fame, fulfillment, and the gathering of many retinues. Seeing the face of the tutelary deity, subduing ghosts and spirits with the power of speech, pacifying diseases and suffering, generating special experiences in the mind, having clear dreams, manifesting precognitive abilities, the three doors of body, speech, and mind gaining happiness and power, gods, spirits, and humans gathering involuntarily, offering food, wealth, and enjoyment, giving immeasurable respect and service. To be joyful and proud of these things, thereby generating arrogance, becoming an obstacle to the path of liberation, this is the demon of joy and pride. Therefore, whatever merits arise, do not, on the level of the duality of appearance and mind, regard these merits as merits. For the joyful and proud mind, and those things that become the object of the mind, because they have no evidence of true existence, understand that all of this is like illusion and dream. Practice like a dream, and for all merits, and the mind that generates pride and its object, abide in emptiness, free from all elaboration. In this way, in the great emptiness free from all extremes, contemplate all dharmas as like dreams and illusions, and by acting in a dreamlike way, you will cut off the demon of joy and pride like an illusion, thereby accomplishing the benefit of beings like a dream. The demon of conceit: The root of all three demons lies in conceit, so cutting off the root of conceit is very important. Conceit refers to self-grasping, which causes us to wander in samsara.
