Kind and gracious Lama! Beginning with the glorious Piṇḍapa, all you yogis, male and female, who are present here, please listen for a moment to this song. This melody is imbued with the blessings of the ḍākinīs. I, Marpa Chökyi Lodrö, spent a third of my life in India, engaging in study and contemplation for forty years. Last year, the year of the venomous snake, during the month of miracles, I set out on my journey, crossing the fearsome Ganges River. Two wicked robbers, concerned only with their own survival, plunged into the water like fish and raced across the land like horses. I was seized by terror, remembering past and future lives. As I meditated on my father, the venerable guru, on the crown of my head, they looked back again and again, then vanished. You saved my life from the river, kind and gracious one! Father, there is no way to repay your kindness. The day before yesterday, on the tenth day of the waxing moon of the previous month, at the Durtro Ramadoli charnel ground, I offered a feast that pleased the lama and performed a gaṇacakra that pleased the ḍākinīs. When I saw the yogis of the feast there, I remembered the venerable Nāro, Maitri, and Turya. Because they compassionately protected me without ever being apart, I remembered the deeds of my father, and my heart was overwhelmed with unbearable sorrow, and tears streamed down my face. I wondered if I should return to India again. At dawn, in a hazy dream, I saw a woman dressed in leaves and branches, extending her right hand, touching my head with her fingers, and saying, "Do not return to India again, but go back to the central region of Tibet. If you do not go to the land of snow, outer and inner obstacles will not arise, and there are worthy disciples to be tamed." She prophesied and blessed me in this way. I am certain that she was a land-protecting ḍākinī. This too is the kindness of you, venerable one. Last night, in a dream of habitual sleep, the lord, the sovereign, the prince Maitripa, riding a lion, flew in the sky. He also came before me and showed three gestures symbolizing unbornness, spoke a dharma without letters, realized an unspeakable meaning, and a previously unknown experience arose. When dawn came and I awoke from my sleep, I remembered the venerable Maitripa again and again. I cannot bear to be separated from him in my mind, and I burst into tears, my face filled with weeping. My breath could not escape, and my chest was constricted. Father, I long to merge into your heart, like a dry riverbed longs for water.

The root of the accomplishments of all Buddhas of the past, present, and future is the guru, for the incarnate venerable one, if you recognize him like space, you will realize the meaning of non-birth; if you recognize him like the sun, you will generate great compassion; if you recognize him like the moon, you will eliminate the suffering of afflictions; if you recognize him like the ocean, you will obtain unshakable supreme samadhi; if you recognize him like a wish-fulfilling jewel, you will naturally accomplish all your needs and desires; if you recognize him like a boatman, he will send you to the treasure island of liberation; if you recognize him like a general, he will destroy the enemy army of wrong views; if you recognize him like a sword, he will cut off the bonds of clinging to reality; if you recognize him like a wheel, you will realize the meaning of not abiding in any extreme; if you recognize him like a lion, you will subdue the wild beasts of grasping and being grasped with power; if you recognize him like an elephant, you will be liberated from the terrifying demonic obstacles; if you recognize him like a steed, he will send you to the realm of nirvana; if you recognize him like a king, you will be worshiped and respected by all.
