Therefore, because it has such a function, it is deluded by conditions, and appears to revolve in unreal misconceptions. So, what is ignorance here? It is the very nature of mind, which abides as the play of the three kayas, the essence of the Buddha. By what is it ignorant? By the very nature of mind. Because the nature of mind itself is not established in any way, it grasps its dualistic nature, that is, the unborn (essence) as self, and the unobstructed luminosity (essence) as other, and is ignorant by the unobstructed power that appears like subject and object. How is it ignorant? The mind focuses on objects, and the seventh consciousness agitates the alaya consciousness, agitating it like water and waves, thereby grasping at self, clinging to self, viewing the aggregates as a collection of fears, and constantly associating with the four afflictions such as ignorance, generating the afflicted mind, thereby appearing in the manner of revolving in unreal misconceptions. That is to say, the unmodified nature of mind, which is no different from ordinary consciousness, when connected with sentient beings, is controlled by dependent origination, driven by the wind of mental movement, thereby the seventh consciousness arises, and when it grasps at self and other, it focuses on the unborn nature of mind, grasping it as I and mine, thereby generating the afflicted mind, and the alaya consciousness and (afflicted mind) drive each other, agitating like water waves, and again creating, this is the unreal completely conceptualized. From this, the phenomena of samsara are empty in nature, but appear to be true and not false, therefore it is ignorant in that way. Therefore, here the luminous part of the nature of mind is called the seventh consciousness, and the part that does not recognize its own nature is called ignorance, thereby identifying the co-emergent ignorance. Therefore, the seventh consciousness agitates, thereby creating pure actions, this is the true completely conceptualized. Its own nature abides in a stainless state, this itself is the stainless mind, this also belongs to the category of increase, it is the equality wisdom of the base period, it should be known to have the same meaning as what is said in chapter six. Therefore, the seventh consciousness that is said here to focus on objects is the mind that has not separated the afflicted mind and the stainless mind. When the other six aggregates arise and cease, they place the ability on the alaya consciousness. Therefore, the *Treatise on Consciousness-only* says that the aspects of consciousness will be explained below.

It is the immediately preceding condition of the six consciousnesses, namely, the mind. Therefore, it is repeatedly stated in the self-commentary that one of its names is the immediately preceding mind. The Seventh Je says that from the point of view of immediacy, it is the seventh mind; from the point of view of being embraced by the four afflictions, it is the afflicted mind; and from the point of view of being embraced by white Dharma, it is regarded as the stainless mind, and considers that there are three parts. In short, from the ocean of the Alaya, like the waves of the mind, it stirs and fabricates, and thus samsara is formed. The Alaya consciousness is the basis or cause of samsara, and the mind is the condition. In the Compendium of Vehicles, it says that the first is the immediately preceding mind, the place where consciousness arises; and the second is the afflicted mind that afflicts it, thus dividing it into two. Dagpo Rampa also divides the mind into two and explains it in detail, which also includes this meaning. Among them, the former mind is the place where the six consciousnesses arise from the Alaya, and accompanied by white Dharma, it becomes the cause of the qualities of liberation of the Buddha; the latter mind generates all thoughts of non-understanding, wrong views, and doubt, and becomes the root of delusion in samsara, so it is not reliable. When dividing it into eight consciousnesses, it should also be known that these two are combined into one. Second, showing the order of the six consciousnesses and the five aggregates, it is divided into two parts: the way the six consciousnesses are deluded by objects, and the explanation of the order of the five aggregates. The first part is: Objects and grasping appear as two, Directing itself to itself and grasping, That mind outward scattering appearance part, Taking meaning from objects, consciousness arises. It is said that the great indestructible bindu of the original luminosity of the ground is moved by the moving wind, and thus the mind stirs like waves of water. Although there is no difference in meaning between the object to be grasped and the grasping subject, due to beginningless habits, they appear as two. The mind itself specifically directs itself to itself, and grasps as subject and object, thus producing appearance. From this arises, from this it arises near the object. The appearance part of that mind scattering outward, taking meaning from external objects arises, and from this the six consciousnesses arise, therefore it is deluded in this way. Here, what is deluded is the collection of ordinary beings who are attached to the appearance of objects.
