There are two things: the text of the chapter and the indication of the chapter's name. The first has four points: the nature of pure and impure mind, how it is deluded, the distinction of causes and conditions, and the distinction of the three states. The first has two points: the nature of mind and the explanation of the aspects of mind. The first is: The cause is the beginningless nature of mind, although there is no limitation of vastness or partiality. It is said, What is the cause or basis of all samsara and nirvana? What is the condition for the appearance of samsara and nirvana from that? The basis or cause of all samsara and nirvana is the beginningless and endless nature of mind, and because it is free from the elaboration of one and many, it is not limited in vastness, and there is no falling into any side of permanence and annihilation, acceptance and rejection, etc. Thus, the realm of dharma, the tathagatagarbha, is recognized as an indispensable basis. Here, in the auto-commentary, it is said that the dharmata, suchness, which is the basis of all samsara and nirvana, is called the alaya, and its inner part, together with the pure part, is called the alaya-jnana, and from the aspect of all seeds, it is called the alaya-vijnana, thus dividing the mind into two kinds, pure and impure. The way samsara appears from the alaya-vijnana, and the way nirvana appears from the alaya-jnana, explain the difference between the higher and lower vehicles. Furthermore, the dharmata, suchness, which is the basis of all samsara and nirvana, is the primordial, indestructible great bindu, the Prajnaparamita, the Mahamudra, the innate jnana, the ordinary consciousness, etc., which are indicated by various names. It is moved by the wind of mental movement, and other discriminations arise, and because it appears as a dualistic phenomenon, it is given the names alaya-jnana and alaya-vijnana. Among these, the alaya-jnana is the tathagatagarbha mentioned above, which is said to be the nature of mind in the Prajnaparamita and the Uttaratantra, and in the Dohakosha, it is said to be the wish-fulfilling jewel-like mind. In the Dharmapada Sutra, it is said: The realm of beginningless time is the place of all dharmas. What is said is also this meaning. Therefore, it is explained as jnana. In the Name Praise, it is said: Transcending the nature of consciousness, the way of non-dual jnana is shown.
