The division of the three categories. The first part has two: explaining the nature of mind and the aspects of mind. The first part is: "The cause is the nature of mind, without beginning, Vast, unbiased, and without partiality." It is said, what is the cause or basis of all of samsara and nirvana? What are the conditions for the appearance of samsara and nirvana from that? The basis or cause of all of samsara and nirvana is that the nature of mind has no beginning or end, and because it is liberated from the elaboration of one and many, it is not exhausted in vastness, and it is not fallen into the sides of permanence and annihilation, acceptance and rejection, etc. Thus, the Dharmadhatu, the Tathagatagarbha, is identified as the basis without which it would not arise. Here, in the self-commentary, it says: The Dharmata, the Suchness, which is the basis of all samsara and nirvana, is spoken of as the Alaya, and within that, the pure part is spoken of as the Alaya-jnana, and the part of all seeds is spoken of as the Alaya-vijnana, thus dividing the mind into two, pure and impure. The way samsara appears from the Alaya-vijnana and the way nirvana appears from the Alaya-jnana are explained with the differences of the higher and lower vehicles that establish them. Also, the Dharmata, the Suchness, which is the basis of all samsara and nirvana, is the primordial, indestructible great Bindu, the Prajnaparamita, the Mahamudra, the innate Jnana, the ordinary consciousness, etc., which are indicated by many names. When that is moved by the wind of mental activity, other thoughts enter, and because of the appearance of duality, it is given the name Alaya-jnana and Alaya-vijnana. Therein, the Alaya-jnana is the Tathagatagarbha mentioned above, which is said to be the nature of mind in the Prajnaparamita and the Uttaratantra, and in the Dohas it is said to be the wish-fulfilling jewel-like mind. In the Abhidharma Sutra, it is said, "The realm of beginningless time is the place of all dharmas," which also means this. That is explained as Jnana, as it is said in the Namasamgiti, "Transcending the nature of consciousness, possessing the nature of non-dual Jnana." That is the cause of the same kind of nirvana and the independent or lordly cause of samsara, and that is also the Alaya-vijnana is water and milk.

Since it exists in a mixed manner, those who are confused about the true meaning, because they do not recognize the alaya-jnana, consider it to be only the six consciousnesses, and even if they consider it to be the eight consciousnesses, they only cling to the alaya as consciousness. In the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it says: Relying on the enlightenment of the Buddha, it becomes a habit of hearing, and wherever it enters, the consciousness that matures in a simultaneous manner, although it enters like water and milk, that is not the alaya-consciousness, because it is the seed of the antidote. As it is said, it is considered that consciousness is the support and wisdom is the supported way of entering. The alaya-consciousness, which is now widely known to the Abhidharma scholars, is the real cause of samsara, but not the cause of nirvana. The detailed classification of it should be understood in the self-commentary and so on. Here, the meaning of beginningless and endless is that, from the aspect of consciousness, it appears as confusion and liberation, which is its beginning and end, but the beginning and end from the aspect of time is fabricated by conceptual thought, and the essence of both confusion and liberation has never existed from the beginning. The essence of both defiled and undefiled minds is dependent origination, which cannot be expressed in any other way, so there is no beginning earlier than it, so it is called beginningless time, or because it is free from the three of birth, cessation, and abiding, it is called beginningless and endless. Buddhas and all sentient beings cannot be said to be one or different, so the scope is not exhausted, and it does not fall into any side of permanence and annihilation, acceptance and rejection, so it is not biased to any side, which is showing the nature of reality. Here, saying that the cause of the cause is the alaya-consciousness, and that the noble father and sons do not accept the alaya-consciousness, etc., are all faults of not having heard the Compendium of the Great Vehicle and the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, etc. The word ཀྱང་ is a conjunction that gathers the following words. Second, in "That Nature Unceasing Play," it says: Essence is emptiness and nature is luminosity, appearance is unceasing and manifests everything. As it is said, if the nature of mind is the basis of all samsara and nirvana, then how do samsara and nirvana appear separately from it? Such a nature of mind, the aspect of its power not ceasing
