It is so. Second, the activity of taking and abandoning gives rise to feeling. That which grasps at characteristics is consciousness. Conditioned phenomena are designated as other than the object of appearance. Attachment forms the skandha of form. Thus it is said, as the appearance of habits increases, the first coarse illusion to arise is consciousness. Therefore, here, the skandha of consciousness is shown first among the five skandhas. When consciousness perceives objects as agreeable or disagreeable, it discriminates between these three, taking, abandoning, and being neutral. Therefore, the three aggregates of feeling arise. Then, the skandha of feeling. Because it grasps the characteristics of the nature and distinctions of that object, the skandha of perception is formed. Therefore, perception. In this way, various objects, agreeable and disagreeable, are distinguished separately, and various appearances are manifested. Because conditioned phenomena are accumulated, and different objects of appearance are designated as other than themselves, the aggregates of mental events that appear are formed. Therefore, formation. That formation stabilizes the habits established in other objects, and manifestly clings to the nature and characteristics of form, etc. Therefore, the skandha of form is formed. Therefore, it is shown last among the skandhas. This order is the order of arising, which is called the order of cause and effect. Third, showing the distinction between cause and condition, there are two: showing six causes and showing four conditions. First, the five elements and consciousness are six. It is designated as cause by conceptualization. Thus it is said, the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, and the six of the element of consciousness, are the cause of all phenomena included in samsara and nirvana. Thus, it is designated as such for those with conceptual thought. For those without conceptual thought, the elaboration of cause and effect is simply pacified. The characteristics of these are, in order, hard and stable, moist and wet, hot and burning, light and moving, empty and open. The characteristic of consciousness is as previously shown. Second, there are four: causal condition, dominant condition, objective condition, and immediate condition. First, the habits of that are accumulated in the alaya consciousness, which is called the causal condition. Thus it is said, the different entities of samsara and nirvana appear.

The habits or seeds accumulated in the Alaya consciousness are the co-emergent cause of that illusory appearance. Because if there is no Alaya consciousness of all seeds, it is impossible to determine other causes of sentient beings. The second is: The self-cause appears in between, The eye and other faculties are. As it is said, the self-cause of the five sense consciousnesses is the eye faculty that appears between the object and the consciousness, such as the Utpala flower, and the five pure material faculties, and the self-cause of the mental consciousness is the known faculty. That is also because it is based on the four elements, formed into particles, and connected with consciousness, so the object can appear clearly, so it is called pure material. The teacher Dignāga and others believe that before the eye consciousness, the eye has the special ability to act on color, which is the eye faculty and so on. The mind faculty is the mind base, because it is said there that the mind faculty is the function of the door that produces consciousness. That is the same as the immediately preceding mind that will be explained below. The third is: The objective condition is form, etc., The knowable that appears as an object. As it is said, the objective condition of the six aggregates is form, etc., as well as sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma, which are the knowable that appears as the object of each consciousness. The objective conditions of the other two are also obtained through meaning, so the objective condition of the Alaya consciousness is said to be the five faculties, etc., that appear as the world and the body of the place container. The object of the afflicted mind is the Alaya consciousness itself. The fourth is: The immediately preceding condition is called, Whatever has ceased, that immediately, Is the sixth together with the mind. As it is said, the immediately preceding condition of the sixth consciousness together with the mind refers to the ability of the later consciousness to arise immediately after the former of the six consciousnesses has ceased. That consciousness, which is said to be united with the powerful habits of the Alaya consciousness and the mind element, is the immediately preceding condition of the later consciousness. Because after one's own cessation, it is not interrupted by other awarenesses, it is the cause of producing the later six consciousnesses. Therefore, the mind itself has the ability to arise, existing on the Alaya consciousness.
