Three. Essence, meaning, and classification. The essence is divided into two: ultimate and conventional. The first is considered to be the mind of enlightenment inseparable from emptiness and compassion. Je Marpa considers it to be abiding in vowels and consonants as skillful means and wisdom, which is the essence of the ultimate mantra. Any combination of letters that, when repeatedly recited, accomplishes siddhis is the essence of the conventional mantra. The second is considered a mantra because it invokes or urges the very nature of reality and destroys afflictions, etc. As it is said in the Vajra Peak Sutra: "Why is it called a mantra? Secret mantras protect, dispel all poisons, destroy afflictions, etc., and invoke the Buddha's teachings." Thirdly, the ultimate mantra is characterized by protecting the mind, and it is divided into three types. As it is said in the Secret General Tantra: "The classification of all secret mantras should be known as three types: the lineage mantra is the essence of skillful means, the dharani mantra is the essence of wisdom, and the secret mantra is non-dual wisdom." Therefore, the secret mantra mainly shows the equality of skillful means and wisdom, the vidya mantra mainly shows only skillful means, and the dharani mantra mainly shows only wisdom. Among them, dharani can also be divided into dharani of the cause of patience, holding dharma, holding meaning, and dharani of mantra. Conventional mantras can be divided into inner mantras and outer mantras. The first is that the eight categories of vowels and consonants are indistinctly present on the petals of the secret place, and they arise clearly from the activity of the throat. As it is said in the Sambuta: "In it, Ali and Kali are mixed, and the eight categories are distinctly present. The form of the mantra causes the accumulation of actions of sentient beings to be realized." Secondly, there are three classifications of outer mantras. Classified from the perspective of the method of combination, as it is said in the Vajra Garland: "By fully understanding the serpentine, contracted, endless, and headless, ending with Om (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城体:ॐ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) and Hum (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूँ,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) Phat (藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:啪) Svaha (藏文:སྭཱ་ཧཱ,梵文天城体:स्वाहा,梵文罗马拟音:svāhā,汉语字面意思:梭哈), it is manifestly called serpentine. Expressing one's own essence is the name of the characteristic of contraction. Having Om (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城体:ॐ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) etc. but without a base is called endless. Having everything but without Om (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城体:ॐ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) is called headless."

As previously stated, there are four types. Classified by category, there are secret mantras, protective mantras, and vidyā mantras. In the context of external mantras, the mantra of a male deity is a secret mantra, the mantra of a female deity is a vidyā mantra, and mantras for activities that do not belong to either category are considered protective mantras. As stated in Jñānaśrī's "Eliminating the Two Extremes": The power of secret mantras, vidyā mantras, and protective mantras lies in obtaining wisdom, skillful means, wisdom and wisdom, wisdom and mindfulness, thus obtaining these three qualities. Among them, the secret mantra belongs to the male deity, the vidyā mantra belongs to the female deity, and the protective mantra is the one where the same mantra becomes the mantra of both male and female deities. Moreover, there are cases where the same mantra possesses all three, and the same deity possesses all three mantras. There are also cases where both vidyā mantras and protective mantras belong to female deities, so not all situations are definite. As it is said. Classified by meaning, as stated in the "Extremely Clear Lamp": heart mantra, near-heart mantra, heart mantra activation, root mantra, rosary mantra, vidyā mantra, protective mantra, seed syllable, essence mantra, and first-letter mantra, divided into ten types. As it is said. These are, in order, directly addressing the deity, addressing from the aspect of limbs, strongly integrating the power of the mind into oneself, manifesting the desire deity, offering a garland of offerings, accomplishing the accomplishments of the underground, averting the fear of kings, etc., generating the deity, unfolding the mandala of secret place vows, repeating the first letter of the name, etc. In addition, the root mantra is the body, the heart mantra is speech, the near-heart mantra is the mind, and it is also said to be the mantra of activation. Jowo Je (Atiśa) said: The bodhicitta of compassion and wisdom, the inseparable skillful means and wisdom, is the heart mantra of the deity. The heart mantra is what activates the mind, the near-heart mantra is what closely activates, the secret mantra is what protects from worldly minds, the vidyā mantra is what repeatedly activates and generates special wisdom, and the protective mantra is what generates the mindfulness of not forgetting the bodhicitta. As it is said. Second, there are nine categories of rosaries that are the object of recitation. First, regarding the material. The Sambuṭa Tantra says: Crystal and fish bladder, pearls and, minerals are white and other, for pacifying activities.
