When emptiness and the like are taken as their own nature, it is like a crow using clouds as a sign to hide things, it becomes deception. If the thought of "everything is empty" constantly arises, how can the yoga of emptiness be accomplished? Because the one who grasps emptiness, and all the differences and the qualities of emptiness, are separately grasped, and then they are clung to as being one. This is called emptiness becoming poison, and the other three (signlessness, wishlessness, and non-action) are similar to this. If one understands the profound Dharma of emptiness in the Great Vehicle, the emptiness explained by the noble protector Nagarjuna and his son, then when the clinging to emptiness also disappears, what remains of the elaborations of equality and inequality? When things and non-things and the like cannot exist before the stainless wisdom, then there is no taking or abandoning, and from the beginning, it is naturally pacified in the realm of non-elaboration. Furthermore, explanations such as "existence is not existent, non-existence is not non-existent" are seen. Some explain that existence is not existent in conventional truth, and non-existence is not non-existent in ultimate truth, thereby explaining the true establishment of ultimate truth. Some say that existence is not existent in truth, and non-existence is not non-existent in the absence of truth; existence is not existent in ultimate truth, and non-existence is not non-existent in conventional truth. But these are not good. If so, then the non-Buddhists could also say that the self of a person, as small as a mustard seed, is not non-existent in the center of a person's heart, and existence is not existent in selflessness; or that the self is not non-identical with the body, and existence is not non-identical with the body; or that this world is not non-existent, and the next world is not existent; the result of happiness arising from virtuous actions is not non-existent, and the result of happiness arising from non-virtuous actions is not existent, and so on. What is there that cannot be added with all one's own desires? Please think impartially. If all the words of faith are twisted and explained according to one's own desires, then what is the use of the scriptures? Who will trust the scriptures in the future? Therefore, entering into evil philosophical systems causes the root downfalls to occur repeatedly, so abandoning those and following a qualified lama is of utmost importance. The time is, at the very moment of grasping at a sign.

The reason for falling into transgression: Here, there are no distinctions such as gross transgressions, because all grasping at characteristics are collectively included in the category of names, etc., and are therefore considered root transgressions. Non-transgression: Here, non-transgression is impossible for grasping at characteristics, because there is no grasping at characteristics that does not obscure the true nature. However, there is no transgression in showing others something like a characteristic for the sake of those to be tamed. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "If names were not given, all the world would be confused. Therefore, in order to dispel confusion, the Protector gave names." In short, all names, words, terms, and characteristics are merely imputed by conceptual thought. Objects, forms, etc., are only known through sensory perception. If they cannot be directly known through conceptual thought, then there is no need to mention that the ultimate truth is beyond the realm of the senses. If one understands that the nature of reality cannot be measured by conceptual thought, then it will be easier to protect this root transgression. If one sees conceptual thought itself as the nature of reality, then one can neither establish the absence of characteristics nor abandon characteristics. Those who are masters of yoga without arrogance completely overcome this root transgression. This is not something to be confessed to others. Even if the mind of grasping at characteristics arises like a bubble in the first moment, it can effortlessly enter the great expanse of the nature of reality without interruption. This alone is the correct confession, purification, and restoration of this transgression. If one is distracted by characteristics such as regret, confession, and suffering, then one will make the root transgression even more severe, and will not be able to restore it, because pouring the water of grasping at characteristics does not revive the small spark of suchness. This classification is written with the key points of the oral instructions of this lineage, and because it is not visible to others, it should be kept secret from the logicians. Regarding the twelfth root transgression, the essence is: the heavy transgression of discouraging other faithful people with the supreme mantra, that is, "Making the minds of sentient beings with faith discouraged is the twelfth." The Ornament of the Heart says: "Discouraging the mind of the faithful." The reason is: the activity of the Mahayana is to benefit others.
