Ultimate truth is not the object of the mind; the mind is considered to be conventional. Thus, it is said in the *Uttaratantra*: "Because it is subtle, it is not an object of hearing; because it is ultimate, it is not an object of thought; because the nature of reality is profound, worldly meditations and so forth are not its object." Thus it is taught. Therefore, all grasping, pride, and mental engagement are merely conceptualizations that mix sound and meaning, and the sixth consciousness. Even if they are very good, they are only the antidote to the conceptualizations of the seventh aspect of mind. Although there is no other long-term cause for seeing that very nature than antidotal wisdom, it is an obstacle to directly seeing it at that time. That is, all grasping minds are obstacles to the self-awareness of each alaya consciousness. What need is there to mention that it becomes an obstacle to the manifestation of the way things are, which is originally free from all foundations of the alaya, by the self-aware wisdom? Because of this, Palda Sangpo said: "Even the prick of a sesame seed husk only produces suffering." And, "Conceptualizing things as real is said to be like livestock; conceptualizing things as unreal is even more foolish." And, "Whatever you are attached to, that is what you will see." And, "By what other means can co-emergent or separate ones, or those who meditate on nirvana, accomplish the ultimate truth?" Thus, it is taught that all views and meditations, internal and external, from non-Buddhists to those who view emptiness, do not directly see that very nature. This conceptualization of characteristics is included as a root downfall on the path of the fourth empowerment. Although this does not cause one to fall into the Vajra Hell immediately after death, as some root downfalls do, it is an obstacle to realizing that very nature. Because one cannot escape samsara without realizing it, the tantras consider it to be falling into the Vajra Hell. The object is the ultimate truth of the nature of all phenomena, namely, phenomena that are free from names and so forth. Thus, in the *Guhyasamaja Tantra*, it says: "The nature of reality." Thus it is. Thought arises from the power of clinging to bad tenets, or from not trusting the instructions, or from being accustomed to perverted ways, and so forth. The main point is the suchness that is the basis of all phenomena, and the correct understanding of the noble ones on the path.

views, the state of meditative equipoise, the recognition of ultimate truth in the post-meditation state, and the suchness of the resultant Buddha, thinking, "This is emptiness," or "It is not emptiness," or "It is union," or "I do not accept it," or "It is permanent," or "It is solid," and so forth. In short, whatever one focuses on and clings to, it is ultimately a view of clinging. This is a root downfall. As it says in the Great Commentary, "Whoever does not realize the suchness of the Thus-gone One is called violent, the eleventh." This is explained from the aspect of the suchness of the result. And in the Heart Ornament, it says, "Conceptualizing emptiness extremely." This refers to clinging to the literal meaning of one aspect of the explanation of emptiness, thinking that the nature of all phenomena is emptiness, devoid of anything, and thus conceptualizing extremely. The explicit mention of clinging to the characteristics of annihilation in the view and meditative equipoise and post-meditation state during the path indicates that it can also encompass all clinging to permanence and duality, and the force of clinging to characteristics in the path and result can also encompass clinging to the suchness of the basis. However, even if one manifestly clings to the basis, path, and result themselves, that itself becomes a root downfall, because the distinctions of states are made nominally for the sake of taming disciples, but the nature of phenomena is separate from the imputation of basis, path, and result. If one clings to "separate from all imputations," that is also a root downfall, because clinging to separation requires: the thing to be separated, the basis from which it is separated, the place where it is separated, the time when it is separated, the state of having completed separation, and so forth, a series of conceptual thoughts of the three spheres, and there is no other clinging more extreme than that. If one thinks that all clinging is a root downfall, therefore one does not cling to characteristics, or if one asserts that one cannot cling to characteristics, and if one accepts this as flawed, therefore one does not accept it or thinks that one cannot accept it, then that itself is clinging to characteristics, and therefore it is a root downfall. Because the object and the subject are only shown from the perspective of the state of disciples to be tamed, the object and the subject being different is never the reality, and regarding the ultimate truth, clinging or not clinging, accepting or not accepting
