Those with conceptual thoughts will not see the Buddha. Those with conceptual thoughts about the Dharma will not see the Dharma. As stated in the *Akashagarbha Sutra*: 'The mind's fixation is the realm of Mara; if one is not fixated on any Dharma, what can Mara do to them?' and so on. Therefore, this door of Samadhi Dharma, which completely destroys all fixations and arrogance, is taught in countless ways in the immeasurable Mahayana Sutras. Similarly, all appearances that are fixated upon, such as names, are merely fabrications; they do not exist as they are. For example, mistaking hail for crystal, even if held in the hand, it is not crystal. As stated in the *Illusion-like Samadhi Sutra*: 'Friend, all Dharmas are empty; why ask for their names? If all Dharmas are without names, whose name should be asked?' And: 'Name is empty of name; in name, there is no name. All Dharmas are without names, yet they are expressed by names. What is the nature of name? It is neither seen nor heard.' And so on. This door of Dharmas without characteristics should be understood from the principles of the immeasurable Sutras of the *Prajnaparamita*. Therefore, the notion that phenomena, whether named or unnamed, are substantially existent is merely a designation by the Shravakas due to their sectarian views, and is not actually the case. Furthermore, many later Tibetans who assert that 'merely designated name-Dharma' exists only in name are also failing to comprehend that all names and characteristics, whether designated or not, are fundamentally neither existent nor nonexistent at any time. Fearing this state, they generate a distorted clinging to existence in names and so forth. In short, just as a painting is not rewarded if the eyes are not drawn, even if the work is complete, similarly, even if the qualities of the path to enlightenment and the perfections of the generation and completion stages are complete, one cannot transcend Samsara and Nirvana without realizing Suchness. And what obscures Suchness is precisely the mind that clings to Suchness itself. For example, when a person holds a torch at night, it is not the darkness that obscures, but the person themselves, their hand, and the torch's container. Therefore, in the *Bodhicharyavatara*:
