If a qualified Lama is found, then even through the terms of trade and agriculture, one can connect with Suchness, let alone through the paths. Therefore, one should seek a qualified Lama, and not just seek scriptures, reasoning, and instructions. Even if one obtains the view of the inseparability of samsara and nirvana from the pages of a book, it cannot bestow what is needed. The thought is: due to the power of the negative habits, attachments, and ignorant unawareness of various views, one does not believe. Due to being accustomed to speculation, one does not believe in the true state. Regarding this, later Tibetans consider that those who do not doubt the good state from the beginning and have firm faith are dull and follow faith, while those who do not believe in the true state are sharp and follow the Dharma. However, these two are reversed. If that were the case, then not believing in the Great Vehicle, like Light Protector Completer and the Hearer Sendhapa, would be sharp, and those faithful who, upon hearing the name of the Great Vehicle, have their hair stand on end and shed tears, and are certainly of the Great Vehicle lineage, would be dull. The main point is: not believing in those pure Dharmas and giving rise to thoughts of doubt and uncertainty. Regarding this, although the Lama has taught before during empowerment or the path, one only remains neutral and does not generate additional certainty. Later, one generates thoughts like, "What kind of pure Dharmas are these?" or generates such discriminating thoughts. Previously, it was said that the five aggregates are Buddha. Later, due to some circumstance, one remembers it, and it is like a nail being hammered into consciousness. Then, one generates thoughts like, "Is this true or not?" Merely doubting the meaning is not a root downfall, because that circumstance will cause one to gain certainty about self-existing purity. Therefore, doubt that does not change the meaning is a root downfall here. The time is: only when the thought of doubt becomes firm. Some say that doubting self-existing purity, not believing, and refuting it, when heard by others, is complete, which is distorting the point. Refuting means negating, and if there is no other purpose, one must refute it, and one must generate the thought that that object is not a true Dharma. If one refutes the purity taught in the Secret Mantra with reasoning, etc., that is the sixth root downfall, and if one does it knowingly, it belongs to the second, so the root downfall is repeated.

Therefore, in tantras and the Steps of the Heroes, etc., it is said that generating doubt is a root downfall, but to deliberately go beyond and prohibit it, and furthermore, to say that others' understanding is a root downfall, is like concealing the actual ninth root downfall that occurs in the tantras, and instead solemnly designating other unlikely faults as root downfalls. It is evident that they do not regard the Vajradhara's tantras as a standard. In general, you seem to define the time when most root downfalls occur as when body and speech manifest, are understood by others, and generate thoughts in others. If so, a yogi dwelling alone in a secluded place would have no fear of root downfalls and therefore would not need to guard against them. If body and speech do not manifest, then no matter what one thinks in the mind, there would be no fear of root downfalls. If so, it seems very necessary for present-day mantra practitioners. However, unless you personally ask Vajradhara and receive instructions, it does not seem that the previously renowned tantras, Indian treatises, and saints have said this. We have only heard that the Great Vehicle primarily emphasizes the mind. Therefore, even when a yogi dwells alone, if they become angry with the precious guru and their mind is disturbed, it is the first root downfall. Regarding teachings like those of the Hearers' Vehicle, knowingly regarding them as teachings but not believing in them and treating them with contempt is the second root downfall. Holding firmly to the thought of being angry and upset with a vajra brother or sister is the third root downfall. Separating from loving-kindness and compassion and generating the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer is the fourth root downfall. Abandoning white bodhicitta is the fifth root downfall. Obstructing the treatises of the Hearers' Vehicle or tantric sections that are different from one's own, treating them like other sects with hatred, and composing treatises to that effect is the sixth root downfall, and so on. Most of the fourteen root downfalls are likely to occur. Therefore, the Great Vehicle primarily tames and binds the mind, and it is not merely the body and speech that are to be tamed. In particular, this root downfall is more likely to occur than any of the previous ones because the previous eight were established from the perspective of coarse mental states such as abandonment and contempt, while this root downfall is established merely from the firm clinging to doubt and hesitation. The manner of falling into downfall is the same. The absence of downfall is that there can be no absence of downfall for hesitation that does not change the meaning, while doubt that changes the meaning has already been explained as not being a downfall. Therefore, even if one has not understood the true nature of purity, one cannot say that the Buddha's words are untrue.
