As it is said, "One should always act with independence." Generally, based on the various collections of scriptural quotations from sutras and treatises, regarding whether the Buddha has mind or not, whether he possesses conceptual thought or not, whether he has form or not, even in India, the tenets of the great chariots differ. In Tibet, there are those who follow the Sravaka tradition and do not accept a Buddha other than the supreme Nirmanakaya; there are those who believe that both the Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya are included in the single essence of the Dharmakaya, but their forms are different; there are those who believe that the actual Buddha is the Sambhogakaya, while the Dharmakaya resides in its essence, and the Nirmanakaya is an emanation of the Sambhogakaya, like the illusion emanated by a magician, not included in the Dharmakaya; there are those who believe that both Rupakayas are not Buddhas at all, but merely the eye consciousness of the perceiver; there are those who believe that all four Kayas are contradictory; there are those who believe that the two Rupakayas are contradictory; and there are those who believe that the Dharmakaya and Rupakaya are contradictory, and so on. Although there exists an endless collection of such views, the river of the intention of all sutras and tantras merges into the ocean of pith instructions, which is solely this view of the indivisibility of the four Kayas. Because of the fear of being intimidated by the words of debate, I will not elaborate on it here. Although that is so, the four Kayas are mainly spoken of from the perspective of the four qualities (the qualities of the four Kayas), but they can also be summarized into three Kayas, two Kayas, the Sahajakaya, or the one Kaya of the great secret single essence. Similarly, one can elaborate from five Kayas, six Kayas, and so on, up to the innumerable. However one establishes them, just as the sky cannot be counted or measured, all the establishments made by the minds of sentient beings are attached to the objects manifested by their own minds, and they are attached to the mind that grasps them. Therefore, they diligently measure, but they will not come to know the way things are. Therefore, the nature of the Buddha is not mixed or defiled with all dharmas, and although one cultivates the non-dual dharma, it is not within the scope of sound and conceptual thought, yet it enters into the state of sound and conceptual thought. Although the application of names, words, and terms ceases, it becomes the basis of all names, words, and terms. This great state, which is inconceivable and immeasurable in any way, is known by the self-aware wisdom in each of its own natures.
