Regarding the oral instructions, even if it is the only teaching, from the teachers of the state of being in the womb (mother's womb) to the state of being born, there are only these differences in the view and stages of realization in Madhyamaka, that is, the only scriptures, reasoning, and oral instructions, understood by twelve individuals with different faculties simultaneously and together, and then taught to others, due to the differences in their respective faculties, twelve different views arise. If a qualified lama is found, he can even use the terminology of commerce and agriculture to explain the suchness, let alone through other means? Therefore, one should seek a qualified lama, not just scriptures, reasoning, and oral instructions. Even if the view is that samsara and nirvana are inseparable, if it is only obtained from books, it cannot bring benefit. The thought is: due to the evil habits, attachments, and ignorant ignorance of various views, there is disbelief. Due to the habit of speculation, there is disbelief in the true state, which later Tibetans consider to be the behavior of the sharp-witted following the Dharma, and they consider believing in good fortune and the true state from the beginning without hesitation to be the behavior of the dull-witted following faith. However, these two views are reversed. If that were the case, then those who do not believe in the Great Vehicle, such as Kashyapa Buddha and the Shravaka Sendhapa, and those believers who are certain to be of the Great Vehicle lineage, who feel their hair stand on end and shed tears just by hearing the name of the Great Vehicle, would lead to the former being sharp-witted and the latter being dull-witted. The main point is: not believing in these pure dharmas and giving rise to thoughts of doubt and hesitation. Regarding this, although the lama had taught it before during the empowerment or the stages of the path, it was only taken as a neutral attitude, and no deeper understanding arose. Later, the thought arises: what kind of pure dharmas are these? Or like this, a thought of contemplation arises. Previously it was said that the five aggregates are the Buddha, and later, due to some cause, it is remembered, and it becomes like a nail hammered into wood, and then the thought arises: is this true or false? Merely giving rise to doubt about the change of meaning is not a root downfall, because this cause will lead to certainty about self-nature purity. Therefore, doubt that does not change the meaning is a root downfall here. The time is: only when the thought of doubt becomes firm. Some people do not believe because they doubt self-nature purity and refute it, and it ends when it is heard by others.

To say "it is" means correcting the key point; refuting means negation. If there is no other necessity and refutation is required, then one must have the thought that the place is not the true Dharma. If one refutes the pure teachings of Secret Mantra with reasoning, etc., that is the sixth root downfall. If one knowingly refutes, it is included in the second, so the root downfall will be repeated. Generating doubt from the tantras and the Heroes' Steps, etc., is said to be a root downfall, but to deliberately argue and refute, and even that is not allowed, and to say that others' understanding is a root downfall, it seems that they are hiding the actual ninth root downfall that occurred in the tantras, and instead insist on emphasizing other difficult-to-occur faults as root downfalls. Therefore, it is understood that they do not regard the tantras of Vajradhara as authoritative. In general, you seem to place most of the root downfalls at the time when they appear in body and speech, are understood by others, and others generate thoughts. If that is the case, a yogi living alone in a secluded place has no fear of root downfalls, so there is no need to guard against them, and if they do not appear in body and speech, then whatever one thinks in the mind, there is no fear of root downfalls. If that is the case, it seems to be most needed by the mantra practitioners of today, but unless you personally ask Vajradhara and he says so, it does not seem that the previously famous tantras, Indian treatises, and saints have said this. We have only heard that the Great Vehicle emphasizes the mind. Therefore, even if a yogi lives alone, if he becomes angry with the excellent lama and his mind is disturbed, it is the first root downfall. Regarding the teachings like those of the Hearers' Vehicle, knowingly disbelieving and treating them with contempt is the second. Holding firmly to the thought of being angry and disturbed with a vajra friend is the third. Being separated from loving-kindness and compassion and generating the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer is the fourth. Abandoning bodhicitta is the fifth. Composing treatises that prevent the doctrines of the Hearers' Vehicle or other schools' doctrines that are different from one's own tantric section with hatred is the sixth, etc. Most of the fourteen root downfalls are likely to occur. Therefore, the Great Vehicle mainly tames the mind, and only the body and speech need to be bound, it is not like that. In particular, this root downfall is more likely to occur than any of the previous ones, because abandoning and despising the previous eight, etc.
