However, in order to refute the clinging to the reality of the five aggregates as a whole, etc., the way to analyze them into separate parts and establish emptiness is what is stated in the authoritative scriptures and treatises. Third, explaining the essence of the Buddha is threefold: showing its own nature, explaining its qualities, and explaining it by combining examples and meanings. First, as it is said, "From all, does not understand the meaning." Thus, all phenomena that appear are unborn from the beginning and are not truly established, so they are not true in the ultimate sense. The self-power of the mind appears unceasingly and separately, so it is not false in the face of delusion. For example, when the image of the moon appears in clear water, the moon has never existed since the time it appeared as the moon; although there is no moon, the appearance of the moon's shape and color does not cease; the appearance of the moon and the reality of non-existence are indistinguishable. If one knows that the nature of the water moon is emptiness, then the clinging to the moon will be naturally liberated. Similarly, the appearance of objects has never truly existed since the time of appearance; although it does not truly exist, the appearance does not cease. Therefore, appearance and emptiness are indistinguishable. Understanding that the nature is emptiness, and thus the clinging to appearance is naturally liberated, is what the master Buddha, who is skilled in all that is knowable, and his retinue approve and desire. As it is said in the Hevajra Tantra, "Self-nature is unborn from the beginning, neither false nor true, just like the moon in water, the yogini should know." Thus, the nature of the union of appearance and emptiness, the ordinary, innate awareness that is not modified by tenets and antidotes, is called Dharmadhatu, Dharmakaya, great bliss, Prajnaparamita, Tathagatagarbha, etc., but the meaning is only one innate awareness of mind itself. It is only the difference between awareness and non-awareness, but other than that, the nature is an unchanging Dharmata, so when the basis manifests as the time of fruition, and when the Bodhisattva realizes the path, the excellent qualities that were never before generated are not abandoned. In the state of the basis, when it is not realized, the qualities of the essence are not possessed, etc., and sentient beings do not abandon the inferior aspects. Because Dharmata is free from elimination and establishment. As it is said in the Uttaratantra, "Just as before, so it is later, without change."

It is the nature of existence. So it is said. This meaning is inconceivable even to the bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis, so before attaining complete and perfect Buddhahood, although the meaning of reality is expressed with many inaccurate words and terms, the nature of reality is inconceivable and not the object of conceptual thought, so expressing it with terms does not know the meaning of that nature as it is. Then, one might ask, why is that which is only the realm of the Buddha taught to ordinary individuals? The victorious Maitreya said: Discouragement, contempt for inferior beings, clinging to what is not true, slandering the true Dharma, and the five faults of excessive attachment to self; those who have them are taught for the purpose of abandoning them. As it is said, because one does not know that the essence of the Buddha, who possesses all qualities, pervades all sentient beings, one is discouraged thinking that one cannot attain Buddhahood and does not generate the mind of enlightenment, and one despises inferior sentient beings without knowing that they have the element of Buddhahood, and one clings to the defilements that obscure the element as truly existing and falsely imputes them, and one slanders the qualities of the true Buddha, such as the ten powers, saying that they do not exist, and one does not know that all sentient beings equally have the element of Buddhahood, and one becomes arrogant thinking that one is superior to others after generating a few qualities. It is taught for the purpose of abandoning these five faults. Some say that by showing the necessity, the meanings of the Tathagatagarbha that are taught are all provisional. If that is the case, then all the sutras that teach emptiness are taught for the purpose of preventing clinging to one self and one whole, so they also become provisional. If one thinks that emptiness is the reality of all dharmas, so it is not the same, then if only emptiness, which has become the object of consciousness, becomes the reality, why cannot the luminous nature of reality, which transcends consciousness, become the reality? Therefore, in the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma, all the many teachings of emptiness and freedom from elaboration are to show that the inconceivable realm itself is devoid of the characteristics of conditioned phenomena such as arising, ceasing, and abiding, but it is not to show that the element of Buddhahood does not exist. The noble Nagarjuna said: Emptiness is the essence of the teaching, whatever the Victorious One has spoken, all of that eliminates all defilements, it does not destroy that element.
