Subduing the four maras. Secondly, it is: Knowing what is and is not the place, the ripening realm, various aspirations of beings, and the collection of faculties of taming and liberation, recollection of past lives, the divine eye, and knowing the exhaustion of outflows, not knowing the firm armor and ramparts, for piercing, destroying, and cutting down all the forests, whatever strength is like a vajra. Thus it is said, knowing the cause and effect of what is and is not the place, knowing the karma and ripening as one's own, knowing the various realms or lineages of those to be tamed, knowing the various different paths of beings, knowing the various aspirations or thoughts of sentient beings, knowing the superior and non-superior collections of faculties such as faith of those to be tamed, knowing the distinctions of defilements and liberation such as meditation and absorption, the direct realization of recollection of past lives, knowing death and birth with the divine eye, the ten powers of knowing the manner of exhaustion of outflows of oneself and others, with those, the obstacles of not knowing the opposing sides of each, like firm armor, like a stable wall, like dense forests, in order, for piercing, destroying, and cutting, whatever the ten powers of the Buddhas are, they are like the substance of a material vajra. Secondly, explaining fearlessness, in three parts: briefly showing the essence, extensively explaining the function, and determining by example. The first is: All dharmas are perfectly enlightened and, obstacles are prevented and practitioners, show the path and show the prevention, fearlessness is of four aspects. Thus it is said, in the path of learning, through the gate of equanimity of mind, teaching the Dharma without stinginess, not relying on the Dharma of interruption, entering the path of white Dharma, teaching the Dharma without arrogance, etc., from the cause, directly realizing enlightenment in the essence of all dharmas, thus vowing to perfect self-benefit realization, debaters cannot overwhelm, and the arising of obstacles to liberation, etc., is prevention, thus teaching the Dharma of interruption for the benefit of others, and teaching the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment as the path of liberation, for the benefit of others, indicating the path of definite departure.

Because it shows that one has obtained the cessation of all that should be abandoned, and has vowed to perfectly abandon one's own interests, therefore no opponent in accordance with the Dharma can refute it. In order to obtain bodily comfort, freedom from anxiety, and fearlessness of mind, the four qualities of fearlessness of the Buddhas are thus. The second is: In order to know and to make others know all knowable things of oneself and others, in order to abandon what should be abandoned and to make others abandon it, and in order to rely on what should be relied upon, in order to obtain the unsurpassed, utterly stainless object and to make others obtain it, in order to speak meaningful words for oneself and others, in whatever place, the righteous one is unimpeded. Thus it is said. The functions of these are: In order to know oneself and to make others know the knowable things of oneself and others, that is, all aspects of the truth of suffering; in order to abandon oneself and to establish others in abandoning the things to be abandoned of oneself and others, that is, the truth of the origin; in order to rely on oneself and to make others enter into reliance on the things to be relied upon of oneself and others, that is, the truth of the path; in order to obtain oneself and to make others also enter into obtaining the object to be obtained of oneself and others, that is, the unsurpassed, utterly stainless truth of cessation, therefore, because one has directly realized the meaning of the Four Noble Truths and truthfully declares that meaning to others, the great righteous ones, the fully enlightened Buddhas, in any gathering of ascetics and Brahmins, etc., can enter without hindrance to proclaim the Dharma. The third is: Just as the lord of beasts is always fearless at the edge of the forest, like wild animals wandering without fear. Similarly, in the assembly, the Lion of the Able One also dwells in a good place, possessing unwavering strength without dependence. Thus it is said. Just as the lion, the lord of beasts, is always fearless at the edge of the forest, like other wild animals wandering without fear. Similarly, in the assembly, the Lion of the Able One, the lion among men, also dwells fearlessly in a good place, because he sees that other beings are not equal to himself, therefore he does not depend on others, and he possesses unwavering samadhi, having transcended the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies, therefore he possesses strength. The third is to explain the unmixed.
