Becoming a precursor to non-arising, where previously there was no manifestation, but here, a slight manifestation of the nature of reality arises, and from the purification of experience, realization is about to emerge. The great experience, all thoughts of samsara and nirvana dissolve into it, appearing as clear emptiness like the sky, without day or night, giving rise to the thought of reaching a state of no-meditation, etc. These are the forbearance and supreme dharma of the path of joining. Because stability is gained in the manifestation of the nature of reality, and through extreme familiarity with it, all manifestations that arise on the worldly path become supreme, moving towards the arising of the realization of the path of seeing, free from elaboration. Through these, one can obtain the four of the path of accumulation, the thirty-two, and the four aspects of the path of joining, such as the heat, peak, forbearance, and supreme dharma. Freedom from elaboration means: constantly dismantling and guarding the above experience, earnestly praying to the lama, placing whatever arises in the ungrasping, uncorrected nature, from these one-pointed experiences, freedom from elaboration arises, and as soon as it arises, one immediately attains the path of seeing. Realizing that all phenomena are free from the three characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding, one feels particularly joyful because it becomes the basis for all qualities, therefore it is called the first ground, the Joyful Ground. Therefore, the moment one obtains a small freedom from elaboration, it is said to have attained the path of seeing. Furthermore, because one realizes all phenomena as free from elaboration, one is free from the defilements of afflictions to be abandoned through meditation, therefore one obtains the second ground of the path of meditation, the Stainless Ground. The arising and ceasing of the mind, and separation, which have always existed, are manifested through the light of the lama's blessing, therefore one obtains the third ground, the Illuminating Ground. From the realization of being free from roots, all the qualities of the Buddhas arise, and the work of benefiting sentient beings is accomplished, therefore one also obtains the fourth ground, the Radiant Ground. The realization of the union of emptiness and compassion purifies the habitual defilements that are difficult to purify, therefore one obtains the fifth ground, the Difficult to Conquer Ground. The mature, great realization of freedom from elaboration makes both samsara and nirvana manifest as unborn, therefore one obtains the sixth ground, the Manifest Ground. Thereafter, a small taste of oneness arises in the continuum, integrating self, other, samsara, and nirvana into one taste, and through the realization of union, one moves away from or goes further than the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who cling to emptiness, connecting with the eighth ground to be reached, therefore the seventh ground, the Far-Reaching Ground.

The supreme state is attained. When the root of grasping and being grasped is severed by the intermediate, and all dualistic phenomena arise as primordial self-luminosity in the continuum, unshaken by the concept of grasping at differences, then the eighth bhumi, the Immovable, is attained. When the great single taste, the subsequent appearance as illusion, arises in the continuum, then through familiarity with the realization of union, the virtues arising from meditation are perfected, and all the excellent collections of virtues, such as the four individual self-awarenesses, arise, so the ninth bhumi, the Good Intelligence, is attained. Then, when the small non-meditation that realizes the separation from what is to be meditated upon and the meditator arises in the continuum, all the great qualities of the Buddha arise like a cloud cover, so the tenth bhumi, the Cloud of Dharma, is initially attained. The nature of the spontaneously accomplished self-nature of the intermediate non-meditation is completely realized, and the root of the knowable obscurations is purified from the root, and this is the path of the ultimate distinction within the tenth bhumi. When the great non-meditation of the union of luminosity, mother and child, is realized in the continuum, having abandoned the stains of negative karma and all that is to be abandoned, and having realized all that is to be realized, then the eleventh bhumi, the All-Illuminating, is attained, and complete Buddhahood is attained. If the bhumis are combined with the generalities, then it is the one-pointed three samadhis. The three free from elaboration are the seven branches of enlightenment, the path of seeing, the first bhumi, the Joyful. The one taste is the eight branches of the path of cultivation, the noble path, the ninth bhumi. The ultimate path of non-meditation, the eleventh bhumi, the All-Illuminating, is also spoken of in this way. If the attainment of the path of seeing and the realization of freedom from elaboration are simultaneous, why is it said that hundreds of thousands of virtues cannot be shown? If those with conceptual minds say this, there is no fault, for the virtues arise gradually as familiarity increases. Zhang Rinpoche said: "At the very moment of seeing the essence, although suffering is not abandoned, and virtues and abilities have not arisen, who would criticize it as not being Dharma? At the very moment the sun rises, although it cannot melt the ice, and the earth and stones have not become warm, who would criticize it as not being the sun? The order of the bhumis and paths, and the individual signs of warmth, were all spoken of by the Thubpa (Buddha) in a skillful way for the sake of guiding beings of higher and lower capacities. The ignorant cling to partial views and do not comprehend the higher and lower natures of beings to be guided."
