Therefore, one should focus on names and so on. Then, gradually, one should skillfully distinguish words and sentences, and within each, one should also properly analyze their meanings. After determining those meanings, one should be able to comprehensively summarize them in the Dharma. For the sake of attaining that meaning, one should then make aspirations. With constant mental speech, one should examine each object of search. One should also examine the mental activity without speech, with a single taste. The name of Dharma also encompasses this; it should be known as the path of calm abiding. As it is said. Individual intelligence, faith, tranquility, joy, gathering, examination, the edge of union, and the mental application that is the result of the edge of union—among these seven, the latter is called indispensable proximity. The four concentrations are as follows, according to the Treasury of Knowledge: The first has five: investigation and analysis, joy, bliss, and concentration. The second has four limbs: perfect clarity and joy, and so on. The third has five: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and abiding. The last has four: mindfulness, equanimity, neither bliss nor suffering, and concentration. As it is said. At this time, based on the fourth concentration, the six superknowledges also arise, as it is said: Having obtained the extremely pure fourth concentration, by completely grasping the non-conceptual wisdom, from attending to things as they are, beginningless superknowledge will arise. Thus. The four formless absorptions are: infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, neither existence nor non-existence, etc., blocking the perception of form and meditating from higher and higher to more subtle. Cessation attainment is to enter into the cessation of suffering and feeling, and no other being can enter this except for Hearers, Solitary Realizers, Arhats, and noble Bodhisattvas. Therefore, abiding the mind based on the nine mental abidings is merely calm abiding, and above that, it should be known as being combined with insight. If so, insight is wisdom that transcends the world, and all these attainments, except for cessation attainment, are worldly and are said to be a common path, wouldn't that be contradictory? Answer: There is no fault. Although there are those who nominally call mere worldly wisdom insight, here it is spoken from the perspective of being connected to the path of transcendence from the beginning, therefore the uncommon nature is proclaimed.

So it is. Thus, the explanation of shamatha and vipashyana, etc., although not entirely necessary for practice at this time, is given with the thought that it will be beneficial for understanding the meaning, so it is only briefly mentioned. Please, practitioners, learn about it elsewhere. At this time, the Kagyu masters have a common, unsurpassed secret, which is that the first state is like water on a steep mountain, the second state is like a river flowing slowly, and the third state is like an unmoving ocean. These classifications refer to mere shamatha. Second, the explanation of vipashyana is divided into the main text and the cutting off of the root. The first part is: When repeatedly gazing at the invisible mind, The unseen meaning is clearly seen as it is. The doubt about whether it is or is not is naturally cut off, May the unerring self-nature be realized by oneself! That is to say, because it transcends the object of observation, abiding in the reality of the unobservable mind itself, and repeatedly gazing with the eye of wisdom arising from the guru's instructions and meditation, the meaning that is separate from seeing will clearly appear as it is, so that all the additions and doubts about the meaning of reality, such as "is and is not," "exists and does not exist," etc., will be cut off at that moment. May the wisdom of vipashyana arise in such a way that the unerring self-nature is clearly experienced, thereby manifesting the coemergent mahamudra. Furthermore, for the reality that is free from all names such as thought, meditation, view, knowledge, seeing, and experience, it is merely that these names are established, and merely negating annihilation and permanence is considered to be the true meaning, or explaining it as the emptiness of inert matter, etc., is because one has not escaped the obscuration of ignorance. Therefore, one must know self-awareness and self-knowing, cut off additions and doubts, etc., thereby gaining certainty, and abandon all unpleasant conceptual changes, abiding in great bliss. As it is also said: In the Hevajra Root Tantra, it is said: The grasper and the grasped are completely liberated. The activity of conceptual thought is completely abandoned. The mind and mental factors are stable and unchanging. The nature of beings is just as it is. Like a pure crystal jewel, The mind abides truly like space. The self-nature without beginning or end, Separate from the senses, without elaboration. Without appearance and
