Drowsiness, sleep, desire, doubt, these five are (the five obscurations). Among them, the agitation of thoughts scattering towards various objects, and the regret arising from having done something improper, these two will hinder the mind's tranquility. Harmful thoughts will hinder dwelling in comfort. The sinking of a darkened mind, and even more so, the drowsiness and being overwhelmed by sleep, these three will hinder dwelling in clarity. The desire of attachment to possessions and sentient beings will hinder dwelling in capability. Will this become samadhi, will it not become samadhi, and so on, doubt will hinder dwelling in one-pointedness. These five, if summarized, can be summarized into two. Sinking, drowsiness, and sleep, these three are summarized into sinking, the other various ones are summarized into agitation, that is, sinking and agitation, these two. The method of dispelling them is to rely on the respective antidotes according to the stages of guidance, or, for this, there is nothing to be removed, nothing to be established, to see reality as it is, and to be liberated upon seeing reality. Like this, mainly observing the nature of sinking and agitation, and leaving it uncorrected in its essence, this is the most profound. That is also definitely necessary as the basis for insight. Shantideva said: With tranquility endowed with excellent insight, knowing that it can destroy afflictions, one should first seek tranquility, which can also accomplish signs of realization without attachment to the world. Thus it is said. The classification of tranquility is also as stated in the sutras, the limbs for entering tranquility, there are nine methods of abiding the mind, and striving to obtain the essence of meditation, therefore it is called near-attainment, that is, the seven mental engagements, and the essence of meditation, the first four, etc., and the four formless absorptions, and the cessation attainment, etc., among which the form and formless and cessation attainment are included, and are called the nine successive abidings. Among them, the nine methods of abiding the mind are, in the 《Mother Sutra》: Here, make the mind abide equally, make the mind abide correctly, make the mind abide accordingly, tame, nearly tame, pacify, nearly pacify, one-pointed, samadhi. Thus it is said. The seven mental engagements are, in the 《Ornament of Realization》: Thereafter, first is the diligent one with vows, for the Dharma of the Sutra Pitaka, etc., two people distinguish the meaning, not
