While residing there and teaching the Dharma, a woman named Lekgye Ma saw him and, not developing faith, thought it was not good to see him. Therefore, she requested the Teacher, and based on this, this precept was established. That is, in a secluded place, with protection, monks and nuns staying separately and teaching the Dharma will incur any of the three: a Patayantika, a confession, or a misdeed. But it is not necessarily only a Patayantika, nor is it certain that only a confession or a misdeed will occur, so it is placed in the category of the uncertain. The third, the category of offenses that cause downfall, Patayantika, is divided into two: offenses involving overnight limitations that entail forfeiture, and offenses that are purely Patayantika. The first is divided into common and uncommon. The first is "There is no end without the beginning of day and night," and so on. There are five types: common offenses related to time, common offenses related to ownership, common offenses related to cutting, common offenses related to subsequent modifications, and common offenses related to the first three. The first is: the first five nights that generate the Patayantika offenses related to the duration of a night. If these nights have passed, is it necessary for both day and night to have passed as a condition? If that first night has passed, it is not the beginning of day and night, but the end that has passed that counts as a night. The previous eight periods that are not the end are not included in that day, because they are not counted as that day. Some say that the inability to pass the night only exists at the beginning of the day, but not at the end of the night, which is unreasonable. Because the end of the night would destroy itself, because it passes itself. This argument is accepted. Furthermore, the beginning of the day on the first day of the month should have the ability to pass the night of the first day, because the seed has the ability to produce a sprout. This refutation is accepted. The Patayantika offenses related to the duration of a night are: keeping cloth for more than ten nights, keeping a bowl for more than ten nights, separating from the robes, and the Patayantika offenses of hoarding. If the above periods do not generate offenses at all, then for the fundamental offenses arising from the joint basis of place and object, such as sleeping with a woman, the periods before those nights are the containers for generating the offenses of combination.
