And, the practice of the four valid cognitions (Pramana Catustaya) is explained separately. First, in the Sambuta Tantra, it says: "The treatise is the valid cognition, the teacher and, the follower of the scripture is wisdom, the secret meaning, the thing is also, from one to one, it should be known through transmission." Also, in the Vajra Verse, it says: "Having determined the fruit with the four valid cognitions." It is said, and this also represents the determination of the cause and the path. Here there are three things: the nature of valid cognition, the determination of number, and the determination of order. First, it is in accordance with the worldly terms or discriminations, not deceiving, correct, entering into the ultimate meaning, therefore it is valid cognition, among which the lama is the one who shows the oral instructions without reversing them, not deceiving, therefore it is valid cognition; experience is to experience as the lama has said, not deceiving, therefore it is valid cognition; the treatise is to explain the meaning of the scripture without reversing it, not deceiving, therefore it is valid cognition; the scripture is not deceiving the meaning it is to express, therefore it is valid cognition. Among them, the lama is the one who is prophesied by the Buddhas, or the accomplished one who is blessed by the Dakinis, or has the unbroken lineage of his oral instructions, and needs to have one who possesses the common characteristics of the Vajra Acharya. Experience is the experience arising from practicing the instructions with the four close lineages. The treatise is the treatise that is prophesied by the Buddhas or blessed by the Dakinis, such as Nagarjuna and Virupa, who independently explain the meaning of the Buddha's words, here referring to the Vajra Verse. The scripture, broadly speaking, is all the scriptures of the Sugata, and in short, it is the three tantras of Hevajra. Second, the oral instructions transmitted in succession from the qualified accomplished one, when ordinary individuals of today practice, if any one of the four valid cognitions is incomplete, then that oral instruction will not be complete, and if all four are complete, it will become complete, therefore it is determined as four. Then, in the Kalachakra, it says: "First, one should trust the lama. After that, one should trust oneself. At that time, one should trust the king of tantras. In this way, with three kinds of trust, one will completely understand the meaning of the tantra." Isn't it said that there are three kinds of trust or valid cognitions? If you think so, that is directly from the qualified accomplished one...

If we assume that oral instructions have been obtained, then at that time there is no need for a separate treatise on valid cognition other than the qualified guru, because the meaning of the treatise on valid cognition is to prove that the oral instructions one has obtained are in accordance with the intention of a qualified accomplished one. Because actually receiving oral instructions from the accomplished one himself has already proven the intention. If one wonders, since the master Nāgpopa (Kṛṣṇācārya) actually obtained it from the Lord of Yoga (Yogeśvara), would he not need the Vajra Verse text? That is not the case, because Nāgpopa was dull-witted and gave a forgetful oral instruction, but it was not given in order to prove that his own oral instruction was in accordance with the intention of the Lord of Yoga, just like Ḍombī Heruka. The third has four parts: the order spoken of in the tantras, the order of arising at the beginning, the order of practice, and the order of becoming valid cognition. The first is: The treatise is valid cognition, as is the teacher, Following the scriptures is that very knowledge. That very knowledge is the ultimate experience, the wisdom of meaning to be represented. This is spoken in a confused order in order to prevent speculative people from entering arbitrarily. The secret meaning itself is also the object, which is the actual oral instruction to be established by the four valid cognitions. One should know one from one lineage, which means that the oral instruction to be established by the four valid cognitions is not actually obtained from that accomplished one, but is shown to be passed down in succession. Taken from the mouth of the excellent guru, which means that such an oral instruction, the oral instruction of the lineage is without error, and must be obtained from one who possesses the general characteristics of a vajra master, which is to show the characteristics of a qualified guru. The second is: First, the valid scripture (āgama-pramāṇa) spoken by Vajradhara arises. After that, the valid treatise (śāstra-pramāṇa) explaining the intention of that scripture arises. After that, the valid guru (guru-pramāṇa) arises, teaching the oral instructions spoken from that treatise. After that, one practices as the guru has taught, and experience arises in one's own mind, so experience-valid cognition (anubhava-pramāṇa) arises. The third is: First, one must practice the valid guru, because one must have devotion to the guru, and then practice the oral instructions he has taught. Then one must practice experience-valid cognition, because one must have devotion to the guru.
