Unable to be defeated by enemies, the Shakya monk Sonam Senge writes these words from the glorious abode of great bliss. The first question is, in Magadha, at the Vajra Throne, can the twelve deeds of the Buddha Shakyamuni be distinguished as definitive and provisional meanings? Please answer truthfully. Is it reasonable to hold that the two form bodies for the benefit of others are not Buddhas? It is not reasonable. According to the first view, the noble ones in the pure realms would not directly see the Buddha. Therefore, there would be no beings to be tamed who hear the Buddha's words. According to the second view, please clarify the meaning of the scriptures such as, "Those who see me in form." The answer is: The Vaibhashikas believe that Prince Siddhartha, the Bodhisattva on the path of accumulation who accumulated merit for countless eons, attained realization from dusk to the path of no more learning in one night under the Bodhi tree, which is the Svatantrika view. The Yogacharin Shakya Mitra believes that newly attaining enlightenment while practicing austerities on the banks of the Nairanjana River is the Svatantrika view. Apart from these two views, all Mahayana practitioners agree that this teacher became a Buddha countless eons ago, and that the twelve deeds he manifested to tame beings in this realm are of definitive meaning. Regarding how to understand the meaning of the scriptures concerning the two form bodies for the benefit of others, it can be divided into three situations: worldly convention, analysis of terminology, and analysis of ultimate meaning. In the first situation, one acknowledges the actual Buddha, so beings to be tamed say that they directly see the Buddha's body and directly hear the Buddha's words. In the second situation, although it is not the actual Buddha but the mind's appearance of the beings to be tamed, in general, the two form bodies that have become Buddhas do not change, because the three self-manifested bodies of the Buddha are explained in the Uttaratantra. In the third situation, because it is free from the elaboration of whether or not the Buddha exists, it is impossible to describe it on any side. Therefore, "Those who see me in form," etc., also refer to the latter two situations, because the Buddha's self-manifested two form bodies and the Buddha's self-manifested ultimate non-elaboration do not appear to beings to be tamed. The second question is, for those who have attained the path of seeing, the samsara that appears

So, is it reasonable or unreasonable for it to exist only as conventional truth? According to the first view, the outer ocean would turn into nectar because it appears that way to the gods; and it would turn into pus and blood because it appears that way to the pretas. According to the latter view, how would one establish samsara and nirvana, the two enemies? The answer is that this samsara, which appears to ordinary beings, exists only as conventional truth. If conventional truth does not become a means, then ultimate truth would also not become something produced by a means. Even so, there is no fault in the outer ocean turning into nectar and pus and blood, because the so-called outer ocean is merely something that is asserted according to human terminology. And in the minds of humans, nectar and pus and blood do not even exist as conventional truth. When nectar and pus and blood appear to gods and pretas, they exist only as conventional truth, and other than that, they do not even exist as conventional truth. Therefore, the teacher Chandrakirti said: 'The river is water to humans, pus to pretas.' Thus, establishing the four human terminologies, the key to valuing the way things appear to pretas lies precisely here. The third question is: In the context of the Lamdre (Path with Result) of the venerable Sakya fathers and sons, it seems that appearances are considered to be mind. So, are the Buddha who appears to the disciple's own perception and one's own mind the same, without difference, or not? According to the first view, one's own mind would become a Buddha. According to the latter view, it contradicts the statement that all appearances are mind. The answer is that, as explained earlier, in the first of the three stages, appearances are accepted as external objects, but not as one's own mind, so there is no fault of one's own mind becoming a Buddha. In the intermediate stage, although appearances are accepted as mind, the Buddha who appears to the disciple's own perception is not accepted as such, so the previous fault does not exist. In the third stage, it is free from elaboration. This is also what Sakya Pandita said: 'There are three ways of entering. The Buddha entered in accordance with the world, therefore he spoke of external objects. In accordance with the reasoning that analyzes terms, therefore he spoke of appearances as mind. In accordance with the ultimate meaning, therefore he said that all phenomena are free from elaboration.' What he said is the meaning of entering the nature of reality, and it is understood from the lamp that distinguishes the definitive and provisional meanings of the scriptures. The fourth question is: If it exists, does it necessarily follow that it is Hevajra?
