In general, the cause of accomplishment must be established on the three: craving, grasping, and existence. Therefore, all similar fruits will become afflicted similar fruits. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly distinguish the three kinds of origination: the origination that distinguishes between origination and completion, the origination that distinguishes between origination and accomplishment, and the origination that distinguishes between engaging in accordance with origination at the time of action. The first is both origination and accomplishment as merely the cause of maturation. The second is the first three of the twelve links. The third is because it enters into the intention at the time of the cause. 18) Just as in the realm of desire, black and white deeds are mixed together. Are the results also mixed? If so, wouldn't it be necessary to admit that both the lower realms and the higher realms exist in one continuum? The answer to this question is: separately explaining the differences between the four black and white deeds, the way in which the lower Abhidharma explains the mixing of results, and the way in which the mixing of results does not occur in the upper realms, there are three. The first is: the way of distinguishing between black and white, etc., there are three different appearances in this. As the Treasury says: The result of black is black karma, which is non-virtuous, its nature is afflicted, because it produces unpleasant results. The result of white is white karma, which is virtuous belonging to the form aggregate, because it is not mixed with non-virtuous karma and produces pleasant results. Why not explain the virtue belonging to the formless aggregate? Because there are two results, the intermediate existence and the existence of birth, and the nature of karma is only the three karmas of body, speech, and mind, so it must be said that the one belonging to the formless aggregate is not said. This is common to those who speak separately. However, the teacher's view is that it is also explained in other sutras. Karma that turns into black and white, its result also turns into black and white, is the virtue of the desire realm, because it is mixed with non-virtuous karma, and the result is also mixed. Karma that is neither black nor white and has no result, the karma that exhausts karma, is unwholesome karma, because it has no white result, so it is not white.

It is called "without maturation" because its nature is not afflicted, therefore it is not black; and because it can exhaust the previous three karmas, it is called "karma exhaustion." The so-called "non-white" can be established as having intention through the two scriptural authorities of sutra and shastra, as has been said before. In the Higher Abhidharma, these four are explained in order as unwholesome karma, wholesome karma of the three realms, mixed karma associated with desire (attracting karma and applying karma), and the four uncontaminated paths such as the immediate path. The meaning of mixed karma associated with desire is also explained as either thought or action being black and the other being white. Here, thought and action refer to the time of cause and the intention at that time, and taking these two as the criteria for judgment is the key point. The name of the fourth karma is also called non-black and white, does not produce maturation, and is the karma that leads to the exhaustion of karma. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge, "non-white" is established through having intention, so it seems that the key is consistent in meaning. These are the views of the fourfold division. Furthermore, the sutra also says: "Pure white karma will lead to pure white results, pure black karma will lead to pure black results, and mixed karma will also lead to mixed results." This treatise is also the same. Regarding the meaning of mixed karma mentioned in the sutra, there are two ways of explaining the intention by the Higher and Lower Abhidharma, but here it is clear that it is in accordance with the view of the Higher Abhidharma, because they believe that if the wholesome karma of the desire realm is white in both the time of cause and the intention at that time, then its maturation is purely white. The second is the view of the Treasury of Knowledge, which holds that in the wholesome karma of the desire realm, the meaning of black and white mixture refers to the mixture of continuity, not the mixture of nature, because if the nature is wholesome, then mixing with unwholesome is contradictory. The meaning of mixed maturation is also the mixture of continuity, not the mixture of nature. Then, if the unwholesome karma of the desire realm is also mixed with wholesome karma, isn't it a mixture of black and white? Answer: In the desire realm, unwholesome karma has power, so it does not mix with wholesome karma; while wholesome karma is weak, so it mixes with unwholesome karma. In short, according to this view, there is a mixture of wholesome and unwholesome maturation in one continuity, because there is pleasant and un-
